After Jenny and I's little make out session, she left to go get ready for tonight and I offered to drive her to the party. I cleaned up the living room and went to get ready as well. For the first time, I had an official girlfriend. Well being I haven't really asked her to be, I intended to tonight. I knew how it felt to be turned down and I was beginning to see Jenny in a different light. Today she was sweet, funny, insanely gorgeous and hella cute when she would cover my eyes when the couple in "The Vow" would kiss. Given when the sex scenes would come on, she was more than happy for me to stay attentive. I shook off the nervousness that ran through my spine as I got into my truck. I opened up Spotify and realized it was still on the"Macho Man" playlist. For a moment I thought about deleting it before I settled on archiving it instead.
When I arrived at Jenny's, she was standing outside waiting for me on her porch. I felt my breathe catch in my chest as I took in the sight. She stood wearing a mini black dress and heels with a matching purse. Her faced was lined with make up and she let her hair down. I never appreciated flowy jet black hair until right now. To say the least, she looked stunning. I got out of the truck to open her door for her while she strutted down the front steps.
The car drive was less than underwhelming. I was nervous as shit. I fidgeted with the shifter and kept tapping my hand on the steering wheel. Jenny was quiet and on her phone most of the time. Suddenly I felt her left hand on mine while rubbing it. She never looked up from her phone, but her hand remained still in it's place. I realized she was trying to reassure me and even if I wasn't sure what would come, I was sure that I wanted to give this a shot.
When we arrived and got down, all the guys were giving me high fives and smirks as we past through the crowd. Jenny went to go with her girls and I went to grab us a drink. The party was booming and some people were already past out on the floor. I got a Budlight and brought Jenny a piña colada.
"So you and Jenny huh?" I heard Ava say behind me, "what are you even doing with that hoe bag?"
"Look, Jenny is a nice girl Ava. Just give her a chance. I'm with her now, you already had that chance." I spoke too fast before I could even realize what i'd said.
"Wow. So you're firing shots now?" Ava retorted.
"I don't have to explain anything to you, you realize that right?" I said frustrated. I don't know if it was the beer talking or the pure frustration of not knowing how to answer Ava's question.
"It's none of my business but I invited Evie with me and I know you have this little thing with her. How are you going to explain that to her?" She asked.
"Evie made it clear to me when she chased me out of her house. Personally I could give two shits of what Evie thinks about my life now. I don't care about her. So why don't you take your little friend and you guys mind your business?" I snapped back. I then realized that there was someone standing behind me. I can feel their breathe on my neck and a familiar scent filling the air. I turned around and was face to face with Evie. Her eyes were beginning to water and her mouth kept moving like she wanted to say something. I should've hugged her but before I could even reach out my hand to her, she took off running.
"Great job Alexander. Why don't you just stomp on her heart next time. What the fuck is wrong with you and what did you do with my best friend?" Ava asked before she ran after Evie. Jenny startled me when she touched my shoulder. She turned to me and embraced me in her arms.
"You're finally over her!" is all she could say. She repeated this five times before releasing me and grabbing my hand, leading me to Kellan's backyard.
"Let's get out of here" she said when we far enough from the noise.
"Where did you want to go?"
"Anywhere but here"
We drove around the city. Not really having any destination in mind. The surprising thing was Jenny being the one to have the idea to leave. Jenny loved parties and always took any chance to update her Instagram and Snapchat stories, filling her audience with the fun they were missing out on. I was beginning to realize that maybe, just maybe I didn't know Jenny Miller at all.
"You know you're wrong about me" Jenny said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I don't enjoy parties just to post on Snapchat and Instagram" she said while folding her arms.
"I said that out loud didn't I?"
"You did but you're wrong. I don't enjoy parties. Do you know how it feels to be a girl whose popular? If I don't show up, the girls at school who do, make their little hangout to spread rumors about me. The last time I skipped a party, Lizelle Tomakado told everyone that I slept with her boyfriend. I got a threat from Olivia Carlisle the next day at school saying to stay away from her boyfriend or she'd tell the whole squad that I was in a mental institution freshman year" she said while wiping her eyes as tears formed." Everyone has me pictured wrong David and whenever I try to be who I really am, I get criticized for it. I figured if I just play the part as the mean cheerleader, no one would go against me. As for what your little friend called me, a whore, i've only slept with 5 guys and the rest made up stories about me."
"But then why did you try to sleep with me?" I asked dumbfounded.
"Like I said, you only knew me because of my promiscuity but when I asked to be your partner for chemistry last year, you shut me down to partner up with Evie" she answered back. Have I really been blind all this time?
"It was all a façade to get you to pay attention to me and to get all the people in our class off my back. To keep people's mouth shut about what happened to me freshman year. I instilled fear in them to protect myself but I guess that only wrecked my image more."Jenny stated.
"So what happened freshman year if you don't mind me asking? The whole mental institution thing. I mean you don't have to tell me unless you're comfortable with talking about it."
Jenny took a deep breathe before saying,"I tried to kill myself. I was struggling with anxiety and depression. My dad only ever sending gifts and telling me he's coming back and him never showing. My mom never being around because she has to work two jobs to make a living. When Freshman year came, it got harder. There was more pressure to fit in and when I joined cheerleading it was like getting away from all of it. The only thing is, I began getting looks from the other girls and them talking about my appearance. I was at my lowest so I took a bunch of my mom's pills one day after practice and here I am. After the incident, I decided to change my appearance and personality. I established myself as someone to look out for and never become that low again. What became of me was the school's meanest bitch and biggest whore apparently."
I parked outside McDonald's as I took in all that information but all I could think about now was my adoration for Jenny. I never really paid attention to her before but I was beginning to want to. Something inside of me made me reach out and grab her to the driver seat with me. I held her and kept kissing her forehead. We stayed like that for a longtime, no words were spoken. Not a single movement was made. It took almost four years of chasing someone to not notice the person who was chasing me. Not knowing what she went through and never giving her a second look when she needed someone to. Without even a second thought, the only logical question popped in my head,"Jenny will you be my girlfriend?" was said out loud as I looked at her. A smile creeped up on her lips and she nodded her head. She giggled before she got up to peck my lips and hug me again. If everyone around me was happy, why couldn't I be too?
