Chapter 11 - Chapter 9:Coffee and Bagels

"Hey babe" Jenny said as she entered the room. I quickly threw the note in a drawer in my nightstand. Luckily this hospital didn't skip on paying for patient furniture.

"Hey beautiful, it's so good to see you." I said.

"I'm so glad you're okay! You scared me. You fainted and I wouldn't know what to do if something went wrong. No one would tell me anything when I got here. They just kept telling me to sit and wait for an update. It was driving me nuts not knowing how you were." She said as she hugged me. "You aren't allowed to leave me like that ever again!"

"Okay, that sounds as a reasonable deal." I responded back with a chuckle.

"I mean it David Alexander!" She pleaded.

"I said it's a deal. We just can't have any latex around." I smirked.

"Leave it to you to be allergic to sex." She said lightening up the mood.

"Not sex, condoms." I corrected her.

"Sure like that makes a difference. We can't do it anymore." She whined.

"We'll find away." I assured her.

I scooted over on the bed to give her room to lay down with me. We laid there for a few minutes before the door opened again. We saw Evie and Ava enter the room and Jenny's body tensed up.

"Davy Wavy, i'm so glad you're okay! You're so stupid. I can't believe you had the balls to pretend to die." Ava said.

"Good morning to you too!" I responded back.

"I'm not kidding. Sander called me and told me what happened. I rushed over here to slap you but they wouldn't let us see you yet. You're so stupid. I swear to God if you pull a stunt like that again, i'll flat all your tires." She said angrily.

"I'm fine now Ava. Calm down." I said. Jenny moved over so I was able to sit up.

"Hey Dave." Evie said.

"Hey."

"I just wanted to make sure you were okay" she added. Clearly unaware that I've read the letter. It was hard to look at her knowing what she wrote. She shifted uneasily as she looked at Jenny who stayed holding my hand.

"Hey guys." Jenny said.

"Hi Jenny. Nice to see you" Evie mumbled out.

"Yeah... it's so nice to see the girl David's been fooling around with that caused this." Ava stated.

"Woah, Ava that's not fair." I interjected. "You don't have to be like that to her."

"No, it's okay David. Clearly she's jealous because you're with me" Jenny added.

"You think I still want him? I was the one who ended it with him because he wasn't over some girl he's been in love with since ever since. You're just going to be another distraction like I was. Unlike you, I chose to accept it instead of ignoring it. You know he's not all in with you." Ava scoffed. Jenny pulled the pillow that was under me and threw it at Ava. What a way to start off my morning with a cat fight. Evie on the other hand, stood in the doorway shifting uncomfortably looking at the ceiling. I guess she figured out the cream ceiling also helped with avoiding situations.

Before Ava could pick up a magazine that was on the couch in my room and throw it at Jenny, I yelled for them to stop. "What are you even fighting for?" I asked.

"She started it!" Jenny yelled.

"No, she did!" Ava said as she pointed at Jenny.

"Um, I think this is a bad time. I'll wait for you in the halls Ava. Bye David" Evie said before opening the door and leaving.

"We all know who David wants to be with and when you finally admit to yourself that you'll never replace her, you can be best friends with him like I am." Ava retorted when the door closed.

"Whose to say that i'm not her?" Jenny asked.

"How naive can you be? You saw it when she left that his eyes followed her trail."Ava said as she pointed out my gaze on the door. What good are best friends for if they tell on you, amiright?

I cleared my throat and quickly looked away. I can feel Jenny's eyes cutting daggers at me and Ava's grin searing into me. Never for better timing, my parents walked in. A white paper bag which I presumed to be food and two cupholders filled with cups of coffee. The two girls seized fire and went to help my parents unload everything on a table across my bed. My mom brought me a bagel with smoked salmon, unaware of the growing tension in the room. Jenny handed me a cup of coffee and Ava helped my dad set up the recliner that turned into a small couch for anyone to sit down on.

"Jenny would you be a dear and bring Evie some coffee and a bagel. She's sitting in the waiting room and insisted she didn't want some but still..."mom pleaded while handing Jenny the white paper bag and a cup of coffee.

Jenny hesitated before nodding her head and taking the items from her. Uh-oh. Jenny disappeared out of the room and Ava still had a smirk across her face. Not understanding her vendetta against my girlfriend, I asked my parents to give us a moment to talk.

"What the hell Ava? Why are you being a bitch to her?" I asked angrily.

"Because I'm watching you make a mistake." Ava argued.

"How do you know that? Have you ever considered I might actually love her and be happy with her?" I proclaimed.

"Give me a break. Sure she took your virginity David but I know she didn't take your heart. You're as much of a fool as she is. I saw how you look at Evie still." She added. "I have been your friend for four years and we dated before. I know better than anyone that you have and will always be wrapped up in your little Evie Holloway bubble. Our relationship was good, yes, but I always knew deep down that I will never fully be enough for you. In a way, i'm trying to do Jenny a favor before she realizes it too and she breaks her own heart like it did to me. I may not like her but I know what you're doing to her isn't fair either."

"Evie is too late." I sighed.

"We both know you're lying. I've been spending time with her and seeing you with Jenny is killing her. Did you check under your pillow yet?" Ava said.

"Wait, how do you know about that?" I asked.

"Because I was the one to put it there. The night of the party, she only followed me so she can talk to you and read you that letter. When she saw you with Jenny, she figured she was too late and threw the letter away. Of course being a fan of drama, I took it and waited for a right time to give it to you." She said.

"Why would you do something like that Ava? Is it fun for you to mess with my head? How do you think Evie would feel about this?" I said.

"I'll take my chances with Evie hating me but you're my best friend. I just don't want you to miss your chance and make a mistake. You have been at her feet since the day I met you and that letter sums up that she has been at yours too. You two idiots just had to be stubborn and avoid it all but you can't. There will always be an inconvenient connection between you two." She said.

"I don't care." I said.

"Words can only cover up so much David, but it is your life and your choice. I just wanted to be sure you know that all those efforts were never for nothing." She said.

It's funny how you can love someone so much but you run from them. You decide it's better than getting your heart broken and staying in a relationship you settled into. Was I doing exactly that?

Ava decided to leave after our little conversation and called my parents back in. They'd just spoken to the doctor and confirmed it was just an allergic reaction. They decided to go back to work and come check up on me again tonight before they had to head home. Jenny reentered the room telling us that she had to leave to check up on her mom. With a kiss goodbye from everyone, I was alone again. Or so I thought.

Evie came in after everyone left and stood by the door way again. She seemed to be having a mental battle with herself to come in and sit down. Finally, she made her way in and sat down on the recliner.
