School like everything else nowadays was a humongous waste of my time. I'd much rather be hunting for that bear than learn arithmetic. I stood at my locker and stared at my books weighing my options. I could either go to class, or skip and go to the woods.
"Why are you staring at your locker like its something vile from another planet?" I looked at Alice as her voice penetrated my thoughts. "I'm not. Even if I was I wouldn't tell you. It's none of your business."
I looked at Alice's outfit. All I could make of it was lots of colors and what seemed like feathers. "How many birds did you kill to get all those feathers?" I asked her. She smacked me on the arm. "In case you didn't know, I don't kill birds. But I will kill those annoying pigeons."
I grinned at her answer. The first bell rang and I scowled. I grabbed my books savagely out of my locker and slammed the door shut. Alice winced.
"Damn, what'd the locker ever do to you?" She called as I stormed down the hallway. I ignored her. I was in a foul mood and it didn't help that we were getting a new girl.
I hate new girls for one reason and one reason only. Once they decided you were hot and worth talking and gossiping about they start to test their chances. Especially if they were popular in their old school.
I entered Mr. Birchwood's classroom and sat at my regular seat. He automatically sprang on a project we were supposed to be doing. Boring, didn't anyone know English was no longer important or interesting for that matter?
I stared out the window and daydreamed of a time when my father was still alive. "Can I please have the class's attention?" Mr. Birchwood's voice interrupted my daydream. I looked up and did a double take.
The girl at the front of the class looked like she had walked out of a magazine. She also looked like she wanted to be anywhere but here. She had long pale blonde hair and vivid blue eyes. She was tall with a nice body. Some might say a model's body.
"This is Annie, she moved here from Malibu, California. Would you like to say anything about Malibu? I'm sure it's quite different than here. He smiled and she just looked at him.
"Sure, it's a lot warmer for one, has more things to do than this tiny ass town, and I know people there." She answered. I felt myself grin at her answer.
Mr. Birchwood paused and frowned. " Yes, thank you miss Black. You can take your seat next to Jace." He pointed to the seat across from me. Annie's eyes locked on mine for only a second before she walked down the aisle to the seat.
She slid into the chair and looked at the clock. "Only seven more hours to go, hurray." I heard her mutter. She slunk down into her chair and looked sullenly at the clock and then at her desk. Her distaste for this school was clear.
"Now class, I am going to assign each of you a partner. You and your partner need to come up with a subject or topic to write about. It must be seven to ten pages long." Students groaned. I clenched my jaw and stared out the window.
"Can it be about anything?" Chelsea asked. "Yes it can." Replied Mr. Birchwood. "Any other questions? No? Good now the partners will be, Chelsea and Mark, Tim and Andrew, Tina and Drew, Luke and Kristina, Katerina and Justin,"
Mr. Birchwood kept calling out names but I tuned him out. Until he got to my name. "Lastly Jace and Annie." My head jerked to Mr. Birchwood. Then I looked at Annie who was looking at me. She looked away once our eyes met. I studied her for a minute then the bell rang and I looked away.
"Okay class this paper is due in three weeks. I expect everyone's best." I barely heard Mr. Birchwood as I looked at Annie. She had grabbed her bag and was already heading out of the classroom. I shook my head then headed out myself.
Great, my first day here and I'm partnered with this hot guy who looks like he could be in a vampire novel. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad here. I closed my locker door and jumped as I met the gaze of a blonde who was tapping her foot.
"Your new here right?" I nodded. Resisting the urge to point of that I was obviously new. "Okay, let me get this done and over with." She said. I looked around confused.
"Hey, I'm talking to you." She snapped her fingers in front of my face. I sighed and focused my attention on the girl in front of me. "What do you want?" I asked. "Have you come to tell me whatever it is you small town popular girls tell every new girl that transfers here?" I continued. She opened her mouth to talk but I kept going. "Because if you are then you're wasting your time. I don't go by anyone's rules but my own." The blonde stared at me.
"You've got a lot of nerve talking to me like that. Do you know who I am?" She sputtered. I snorted "I could care less about who you are." I said. "I don't need some pop (popular kid) telling me what to do or what not to do. Your kind doesn't run the school. You may think you do but you don't. Now if you'll excuse me I need to go."
I turned to find everyone in the hallway staring at me. I caught the hot guys gaze. I think his name was Jace. I squared my shoulders and headed down the hall. Ignoring all the eyes that were on me. Hot guys gaze was the hottest on my back. All of my next classes were a blur.
Next thing I knew it was lunch time. I stood in line and rubbed my temple. When it was my turn to get my food I blanched. What was in front of me did not look like meatloaf at all. I grimaced as it was smacked onto my plate.
"Bon appetite." I thought sick to my stomach. I paid the lady at the cash register and scanned the cafeteria for a seat. I sighed. Of course every school had a damn click issue. I took a deep breath and headed for the table with only one student at it. I stopped once I was directly behind a kid that only the word geek could describe.
"Hey, can I sit here?" I asked. He looked up startled. He did a double take probably thinking I was going to bully him or something. I looked away and then back to him. "Look I'm not like that blonde who thinks she can run things. All I want is a seat to sit in at the cafeteria. Kay?" He nodded and moved his books over. "Thank you." I said. He just shrugged.
I opened my chocolate milk then stopped when the hot guy entered the cafeteria. Some of the female students had already commented on how lucky I was to be partnered with him. "Hey Malibu barbie!" I froze. The comment made everyone in the cafeteria go quiet.
"Why are you sitting over there?" The group laughed. Of course the one who had called me Malibu barbie was none other than the blonde from earlier. "Come sit with us." There was more laughing from the group. I ignored her. "Oh I'm sorry. Are we being mean?" I got up as the group laughed louder. I walked over to where she was sitting. At that point everyone was looking at us.
"Are you being mean?" I asked. The blonde grinned. "Really? I think you know you are. From what I've heard you're the bitch of the school. The student no one likes. A real brat."
The grin left the blondes face and she glared at me. "Lots of people like me." She said with a toss of her head. I laughed bitterly. "Oh really? The only reason your popular is because nobody wants to challenge your behavior. There all too afraid of what you'd do to them."
She looked at all her friends. "I'm popular because I'm pretty and likable." I snorted then smiled. "What you are is a fake." I started walking away. "Excuse me. What did you just say?" I sighed and turned back. "You heard me. Your a fake. From your smile to your personality. Even your hair is fake. You need to get those roots done hun." Some students started laughing. I shrugged like this situation was nothing and walked back to the table. I sat down and ate the rest of my lunch.
