Chapter 1 - Logging in

The birds chirped outside a small apartment building in a large crowded city, sleek futuristic cars zoomed by going to their destinations. The inside of the apartment was white with a small black couch and flat screen mounted on the wall. Posters of video games and pro players littered the free wall space through out the small living room. The kitchen was separated by a bar that had a couple metal stools with black cushions. There was a small hallway leading to a bathroom with more posters in the walls and a green tooth brush and some toiletries. Further down the small hall was a closet and finally a bedroom.

Posters of legend realms, the biggest game on the planet and their most famous players covered the walls, there was a desk with a really nice computer center resting on it, followed by a full sized bed occupied by a young blonde man in his early twenties deep asleep dreaming of video game glory.

Scott was an amateur competitive gamer, competing in various video game competitions over the passed few years, gaining minor sponsorships from local game stores. He had been unable to really break out because of his inability to play the most popular and most important game on the planet, legendary realms. The game that could make you rich by competing in player versus player tournaments, finding rare treasures and many many other ways. The game turned in game currency into real world currency and allowed players to cash it in. Much of the world economy had begun centering around the digital world of legendary realms.

As popular as the game was the system used to play it was very expensive, high tech v.r. Gear that plugged you into the game itself much like sword art onlines nerv gear only it was incapable of frying a persons brain. The worst it could do is put you in a coma for a couple weeks.

Scott had been saving the money needed for the system but was still short a few thousand dollars, he had decided to compete in a local fighting game competition when he was approached by a company producing their own version of the new vr tech. Dream tech was a new company that had been producing accessories for the current vr system before finally deciding to enter the market themselves. Scott jumped at the chance, if this system was any good then he just saved himself thousands of dollars.

Today was the day the system was to be delivered and legendary realms was pre-installed for him. He was so excited he almost couldn't sleep that night. His alarm clock buzzed and Scott shot up out of bed and slammed the button. It was the day, his blonde hair glowed agains the morning sun shining through his bedroom window, it was shaggy and currently in a chaotic state of bed head. He jumped out of bed and ran to his dresser and grabbed some clothes and headed to his bathroom for a shower. He had to go pick it up from the shipping company this afternoon and his impatience was getting the better of him.

He hit the home app on his phone and had his coffee made and his tv set to his favorite E-sport station. He could hear a legends pro talking about the top five damage classes in his professional opinion. Scott had been contemplating what class he would play, he wasn't sure if he wanted to try to be a pvp based player or hunt down rare gear and make money that way. All he knew was if he could get lucky he could focus fully on his game career and stop working at his terrible job selling streaming services.

If he decided to play pvp then the assassin classes interested him, some of the mage classes also looked interesting as well. He felt like healing classes would be good if he wanted to hunt treasures, everyone needed a good healer and often would pay for one to come along on adventures. Scott wanted a piece of the action, he wanted to cut down boss monsters and battle other factions and guilds across the realm. " definitely a damage based character" Scott said out loud as the warm water hit his face and rinsed the shampoo out of his hair.

He threw on a pair of jeans and a white t shirt and threw on his favorite pair of checkered vans. Retro 2008's, he had won them at a recent gaming event playing a first person shooter called " watchtower".

" my package should be there by now!" It was a little after eleven, even if it wasnt there it would be there in an hour or so. He grabbed his coffee and watched the last few minutes of the interview before picking up his keys and heading out his front door.

Scott got into a little red car with silver wheels and left his complex going slightly faster than he should, he couldn't handle the excitement he had built up. It was the day, he'd finally get his chance to become a pro-gamer. Twenty or so minutes later Scott arrived to the facility and about five minutes of searching for a place to park he was on his way to pick up his package.

He entered the building, its walls were old and slightly yellow, it had some old fashioned signs that directed him to where he needed to go, he turned a few corners and came up to a small, slowly moving line. He was third in line behind two older men and a middle aged woman. He smacked his hands against his legs to a rhythm he was making up in head, "just moments away from destiny" he thought as he walked up to the desk, an older woman wear large glasses sporting a bob haircut and some few extra pounds strategically tucked away behind a purple wind suit. " what can i do for you honey?" She said will a nice smile, she reminded scott of his own grandmother, who had retired and moved to orlando. She hated the beach but hated the cold more and decided she wasn't gonna freeze another winter in New York.

"Package pick-up for Scott Helker." Hand his I.D. to the woman as he spoke. " you're prepared today huh, must be really important whatever it is you're getting." She mused as she searched the computer and found the order. " I'll be back in a jiff hon."

The little woman disappeared into the back door, after ten or so minutes later she came back rolling a small manual dolly behind her. " this was much bigger than i thought it was gonna be!" She said chuckling, Scott smiled "Well something so important couldn't be too small right ?"

"I guess not, next time you're comin with me to carry it ya self!" They laughed as she handed the dolly over to him "bring it back when you done hon." " yes ma'am" she was a sweet lady for sure, he loaded the box into his car and brought the dolly back to the woman at the desk.

Scott barely was able to contain his excitement, if it wasn't for the fact he couldn't afford another ticket he'd have done ninety through the city trying to get home.

Scott made it without incident to his apartment and quickly grabbed a dolly from the apartment office and strapped his package on.

Twenty minutes of unpacking and plugging his system was finally functional. There was of course a head gear with a glass visor that covered the eyes. It clipped into a small box that he had set at the foot of his bed. Once you placed on the head gear and logged on your body would go into a dream state, there was also an alarm built into the gear to let the wearer know they needed to exit the game. In the past people would remain in world too long and actually starve to death in game.

Scott removed his shoes and laid in his bed with his head gear one, he flipped the switch on the head gear and closed his eyes.
