Chapter 1 - ONE

The sound of chains moving together with a grunting noise echoes throughout the area. A bloodied body of a woman can be seen at the end of the chain, trying to breathe as she attempts to stand out.

But her knees already gave up from exhaustion and hunger; it can no longer support her body.

Her body is dangling from being chained inside the basement of the house she had lived for a few months after getting married.

Her bloodied clothes, sticking at her wounded body, is numbing her sense of pain. She can't even see her surroundings, as to who is the person together with her.

She experienced for the first time the torture she only read and watches, and she admires herself for withstanding it.

As for how long, she doesn't know, for she often loses consciousness after the interrogation held by her own husband. Dousing her with water, or submerging her in it until she can't breathe, hitting, slapping, or giving her with cuts to bleed her.

It might not be him, but he's the one ordering on what to do to her. And it causes more pain for her, knowing that her suffering is caused by her husband, for believing his woman than his wife. Lies coming from the woman she thought her confidante. After all, she married the man that everyone will die to get for.

"Where is it?" The cold voice asks her.

"That item you keep on insisting that I know, you should ask your woman, after all, she's the one who told you that." She answered, wincing in pain.

"Jessica Fureno!" The man gritted his teeth in annoyance. "Don't you dare involve other people here!"

"I shouldn't? But you involved me with that problem you have; you even tortured me because I'm not telling it. By the way, don't call me with your family name, bastard! No husband treats their wife like this." Jessica snarled back.

"Y-you!" The man tried to speak when he got interrupted.

"Andrew Fureno." She said calmly. "If you think that I'm an easy target for your games, you better drop it. I might not be able to get out of here, but I won't say anything to satisfy what you wanted."

*Pak*

A slap resonated at the place and made her spit blood. She only grinned. "Ha, if I only knew that this will be the price of loving and marrying you, I should have prioritized my sister than this emotion. After all, it will be more painful than getting tortured like this."

"..."

"Don't worry, Andy." She called after him. "I'm not a scheming bitch like the woman you keep behind me. After all, I never wanted the title to be the lady boss of your corporation; I just want to be a simple wife, standing beside you, supporting you with my abilities. But it looks like I'm getting thrown out like a dirty rag."

"..."

Andrew still didn't speak, just staring at the calm face of his wife. Those calm eyes unnerve him, but it never made had uncomfortable. And then she slowly smiled, like accepting her bitter fate: she will die pathetically in the place she planned to call her own.

"Have fun with your new wife; cherish it. But karma will strike back at you. I might not be there anymore... What a pity..."

She can't continue what she is trying to say, her consciousness is slipping already away, she feels her head is lighter, everything is blurry and she's starting to vomit blood, on a huge amount.

The stress accumulated in her body from the torture was lashing back at her, she almost chokes and drowns to her own blood leaving her body in a massive amount.

But as she stood dying, vomiting blood, she only thought of one thing.

'I should have prioritised looking for my little sister than marrying this stupid scumbag. I shouldn't have stooped low to him and his lies.'

She managed to smile before her head limped down as her soul tried to leave her body.

Andrew, on the other hand, seeing the smile of her wife, woke up from a spell. He tried to reach out to his wife, but he's already late; that sweet bloodied smile would be the last smile she will give to him. And he's the reason why she won't wake up anymore to smile for him.

"Jess...no no no!" Andrew held her bloody limp body. "I-I I'm sorry! Please wake up, Jess! I beg you! I'm sorry, Jess please, no don't!"

"Andrew, why?" A female voice behind him spoke. "Why did you do this?"

Andrew keeps on sobbing, hugging Jessica's body that is slowly cooling down, apologizing for what he had done.

"Son, I'm disappointed with you." The woman said. "I raised you to become a proper gentleman; not to be a beast.

"Jessica won't come back anymore, and this is your fault." The woman was crying upon seeing the lifeless body of the daughter-in-law she loved like her own.

"Mom, let's send her to the hospital, she will be OK, right?" Andrew looked back to his mother after he unchained the lifeless body of Jessica.

"Prepare the car... Someone call our hospital" Hysteria is evident in his eyes as he looked back to his dead wife. "Wifey, please hold on, someone will cure you."

Andrew's best friend, Jacob, who called the mother secretly as he followed him in discreet was standing at the shadows, shock and pain are in his face. His only female friend died in her husband's hands.

He staggered away from that place, the scene of Jessica being tortured again and again keep on playing in his head.

Every grunt, cough, wince, and short intake of her breath sounded like a wall being crashed down, crumbling, hurting him.

'I'm so sorry Jess, I'm incompetent as a friend and protector. I can't even protect you from your own husband who's killing you slowly. I hope in the next lifetime, I'll be able to do it properly.'

Regret.

An emotion you will feel when you failed to do something that is right.

Guilt.

Something that will eat you in your living days when you know you did something wrong, and you can't fix it anymore. For the damage has been done, and no amount of compensation you will try to do will fix that matter.
