All around him was the black night and black sea. The choppy waves were splashing against the sides of the row boat. He could barely make out the two figure in front of him through the thick curtain of rain. Their arms were quickly making circular motions to move the ores as fast as possible. Obviously the thought of being stranded in the Black Sea at night was not very appealing to any of them.
Regaining his senses, he realized he was sitting in the stern of the boat. Immediately, he grabbed the two ores, one in each hand, and began rowing with lightning speed. His boat-mates felt the added pressure and spun to face him with wide eyes, hair whipping their faces due to the strong wind surrounding them.
"You're awake," the girl gasped, her voice distinguishable but quiet compared to the roaring waves and howling wind. He grinned, his white teeth flashing in the darkness. She bellowed out a laugh in response in response. He was able to vaguely make out the silhouette of the male directly in front of him shaking his head while his shoulders shook with his laughter.
"Glad you're awake man, we thought you were a goner"
"You know I don't give up that easy Les" he replied, "do you have any idea where we are?"
"The sea obviously"
THUMP. He whacked his hand with his ore from the right side of the boat.
"Be serious"
"Honestly? We have no idea man, we been here for hours since the ship collapsed. That was one nasty wave."
"C'mon guys, we don't have time for this chit chat help me find land before daybreak please," the girl interjected. Both boys sighed before relentlessly continuing their previous rowing, unaware they had stopped and had left the poor girl to row on her own. Precisely why she called them out.
Hours passed and slowly, night was becoming day and not a single land mass was in sight. Tired, drenched and arms killing them were beginning to lose hope. The only bright side was the rain had begun to ease up but ominous grey clouds still hovered overhead. They paused for a moment to look at each other and each breathed a sigh of relief in realizing each of them was okay.
Suddenly, the girl's eyes widened and he mouth formed an "O" shape and she tried to speak. Key word tried. She ended up standing, almost toppling us all over and excitedly pointing behind us.
"Why does she look like she's about to yell 'Eureka'?" the other boy whispered to him.
A smirk crossed his features as they turned around to witness what she had seen. Astonishment donned their features. They couldn't believe their eyes. Their mouths fell open, agape.
In front of them, right before their eyes, lay an island that at first glance looked uninhabited. It did not matter to them. What mattered is that they found solid ground to spend the night on rather than the sea. They spun in their seats and with new found hope and energy rowed their way to the island where either help would find them or they would make a home for themselves.
