Angela has always been kind. Although her mother acts resentful towards her, her father has always loved her. No matter what, Angela still loves her parents, but deep down she wonders if someday her father will be like that too. When Angela was five, her little brother Liam was born. Angela was expecting her mother to treat her brother horribly, but instead, she spoiled him. She gave him everything he needed and didn't need whereas Angela had to do chores around the house in order to get meals and clothes that fit her.
Her dad helped her as much as he could but Angela still had to get a job babysitting when she was 10. She tried to do it as secretly as possible because she knew that if her mom found out, she would take all the money she was earning. Angela was slowly saving up so she would have a fair amount of money by the time she moved out. Thankfully, Liam often helped her by covering for her and sneaking some more food to her. Angela was always trying to help him whenever their mom was out.
Angela woke up in the middle of the night to hear shouts from the room across the hall; her parents' room. She got out of her bed and put on her socks then walked over to the door. Angela slowly opened the door and walked out. Using her socks to sort of slide across the floor, Angela was glad that she grabbed the slippery ones that made almost no noise on their cold marble floor.
After a while of shuffling, Angela made it to her brother's room. Quietly knocking on the door in the secret code they made, she heard a small voice inside saying "come in." She slowly opened the door and walked in closing it behind her.
"Hey Liam," she whispered, sitting down on his bed. "Are you okay?"
"Not really," he said. He looked up at his sister with tears in his eyes. "I'm scared."
Angela sighed. "I am too. But we have to be brave ok? Because no matter what happens, we will always have each other." Angela hugged Liam. She was trying to make him feel better but deep down, she knew that if their parents were to separate, they would be separated too.
The next morning Angela woke up to shouting again. She opened her eyes and saw the worst: her mother had come into Liam's room and saw Angela, who had fallen asleep at the foot of Liam's bed. Oh no she thought.
"Angela what are you doing in here?" her mother yelled. "Were you bothering Liam?!"
"N-no ma'am!" Angela said. "I was just making sure he was ok!"
"Fine. I'll let you off this time," her mom said, walking out.
After breakfast, Angela and Liam went to the car where their dad was waiting for them. Only Angela's dad worked. Her mom just stayed at home watching tv.
"Did Liam do his homework?" her dad asked her.
"He said he did, But I'm not sure."
She got into the front seat, knowing that her day was about to get worse at school.
