Chapter 5 - Prisoners and Inquiries

Briggan woke to his alarm, just like any other average day. He got his shower, small breakfast, and other daily tasks done in the typical fashion. Everything was going as normal.

But still ...

The incident with Mastace was still buzzing around in his head. Questions bounced off the walls in his head faster than he could register them. His mind was a jumble of unfinished thoughts, unanswered questions, and swirling emotions that he didn't know how to handle. He barely noticed the world around him as he became trapped in his head by his thoughts. They had him as their prisoner, and they weren't going to let him go.

Mastace made sure he had enough time to get ready for school this morning. He slid his books into his bag, slipped it on, and left for the day. On his way, he couldn't stop himself from reflecting on the events of the previous morning. What was the fainting spell about, and what triggered it? Why did Briggan look so - so - frightened all of a sudden? What was it that he was reading out of those books and writing in that pad? Why was it important?

While Mastace was so deep in his thoughts he didn't take notice of anyone else that might have been walking on the same route, so he didn't realize someone was in front of him until he ran into her.

" Hey!" a voice cried out, pulling Mastace out of his contemplations as he stepped back. A hyena took off her headphones, releasing the loud metal she had been listening to whoever else was in earshot, which was only Mastace.

" Sorry," Mastace said. " I didn't see you. I've been in my head a bit more the last couple of days."

" I can tell," she replied. " Mind watching where you're going? That's how people get hurt."

" You got a point, but to be fair ... " Mastace said, " it's everyone's job to pay attention."

"Touche," the hyena said. " You're interesting, what's your name?"

"Mastace."

"Khrysta."

A thought occurred to Mastace, so he decided to try it out. " Hey, you know anything about Briggan?"

Khrysta stopped dead in her tracks. " Why are you asking?"

" I had a run-in with him yesterday, and I'm curious."

Khrysta avoided eye contact for several moments before responding. " What is there to know? One day he was just like anyone else then, one day, he wasn't. Simple as that."

" C'mon, it can't be that easy." Mastace urged. " There has to be more to the story."

" Listen, you seem like a good guy. Really. However, I wouldn't advise that you go meddling in anything that isn't your business unless you want someone to get hurt." Khrysta put simply before she stormed off.

Mastace sighed. That went well ...
