Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

I've read too many books in my life to think my opinions matters, in fact, I don't agree with how society works today. It's 1883 and still, we can't marry those who our fathers don't approve of, or how men are the preferred gender.

They say God loves man, but then continue to say God loves everybody equally so everyone should be treated that way.

The date is 14th July 1883 and today my family are moving to South England, where I'm supposingly going to meet my future husband, to me it feels as if I'm being sold to a family and being inslaved, but it's not as if my opinion matters.

If a daughter doesn't wish to marry their chosen husband, they bring embarrassment to their family and are seen as witches or if their husband dies she'll be known as a widow and disguarded, so you see why us women don't fail to go along with everything we're told to do.

Oh right, I forgot to mention, everyone are put into social classes based on their wealth.

So we have the social class that I'm currently in. The lower working class... For the commoners in poverty.

The upper-working class which I have no idea what they do since nobody outside our class has time to associate with this social class.

And finally. The middle class, for the wealthy families of England. The only reason we can socialise with the wealthy side of England is because some family's work as maidens for the wealthy families.

If it wasn't for me we wouldn't have a chance getting out the slums of Northern England (lower working class of North England), if it wasn't for my beauty and my desirable personality we couldn't have dreamt of being in a planned engagement with a middle class boy.

His name was Maximus Holland (Max Holland for short) I was told he had gorgeous black hair and his eyes were as yellow as the sun, and that's all I've been told, pathetic, right? A women should know more about their future husband. Especially if they're marrying against eachothers will.

I was in my chamber helping the maidens sent from Maximus, pack the last of my belongings. "you don't have that much stuff, madam?" one of the maidens spoke.

"well of course I don't, I am from the slums" I gave a nervous giggle as I stroked the back of my neck.

The maidens didn't answer but carried on packing my things "do you think he'd treat me well..?" I'd ask the maidens, it was obvious I was nervous and scared for having my life being in the hands of a complete stranger.

"you're in great hands, miss. Trust me, I've been working with him for years and not once has he not brung up you're name after hearing the news on the engagement" the maiden smiled holding onto her own hand.

"but, what if he doesn't like the way I look? I'm may be to ugly for a middle class boy" I'd tremble stopping in my words.

The room fell silent, and the maidens wasn't trying to hide the fact they felt sympathy over me, which made me even more nervous given the fact they wouldn't answer my question.

I was wearing a dress went from Maximus himself. It was the most elegant dress I've ever seen. It was kinda like a ballgown in a gorgeous light blue colour with dark blue ribbons surrounding the corset part of the dress and then even bigger dark blue ribbons on the dress itself. The maidens managed to transform my blonde hair into a bun on the back of my head with another dark blue ribbon underneath to match my dress. 2 strands of hair was left dangling down in front of my face for a better look, I've never seen myself look better. The look brings out my freckles and fine jawline (for a women anyways) Atleast they were cons on this marriage.

A guard also sent from maximus rudely entered the room "miss, we need to leave now. You've had enough time" the guard grunted, it was a shame though because if I tell maximus that he was rude to me he'd be sure to be killed.

It's kind of weird, I never knew a middle class family would have guards. I knew about maidens and butlers because they could afford them, but hiring a guard is triple the amount, only a royal could afford guards.

"on my way" I said, I wasn't brave enough to call him out on his rudeness so I gave up.

"Emma, my darling!" my mother burst into room, she was the only one who seemed to be proud of me but would miss me "Hey mother" I'd smile at her embrasing the hug she came for "Where's father?" I'd ask her pulling away from the hug with my hands on my dearest mother's shoulders "he's speaking to the driver" she'd sigh.

"I see, will you be coming to Maximus' home with me?" I would ask hoping that my mother would atleast tag along to see me one last time.

"of course dear, what kind of mother would I be if I didn't see my daughter into the world of her own?" it was clear she was about to cry so I gave her a hug to comfort her.

"I'll do my best to make you proud, don't worry mother. Even if it costs my life.." it was sad because I actually meant those words.
