Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: At the Shadows

As I read Kairi's letter, a thought came to my mind.

"Is it wrong that I acquainted myself with her" Kaito asked himself.

He planned that he will keep his low profile at the Academy, but now that he is with two Nobles, it would attract a quite a number of eyes. It's fine if he is a Noble, but he is a commoner, people will get curious as why Nobles are paying attention at him.

"I'll just wait for a few more days, if it gets worse, I'll have to decline the other one or maybe both" Kaito thought as he left for School.

...

Kaito arrived at the Academy's gate and saw Kairi and her friend, Val.

"It seems they waited for me" Kaito thought as he walked towards the two.

"So, what do you think?" Kairi asked.

"I'm sorry for how I acted the last time" Val said as she lowered her head.

"It's fine" Kaito said as he passed and continued walking.

"Thank you" Kairi said happily.

"Just don't spread this anymore" Kaito said as he looked back at Kairi.

Kairi suddenly remembered Kaito's words:

"I don't wish to stand out"

Kairi shivered as she also remembered that Kaito can stop them from moving as long as he managed to touch their shadows.

"The same goes for you" Kaito said at Val.

"Y-Yes" Val said as she stayed behind Kairi.

"We can start if you guys are ready, I'll be waiting at the Library" Kaito said as he left the two alone.

"Are you sure he isn't planning anything" Val asked Kairi worriedly.

"I am" Kairi reassured Val.

"I'll trust you Kairi"

"Then, let's go meet him" Kairi said as she headed to the Library.

"Sure" Val said as she followed Kairi closely.

They then went to the Library.

...

Kaito arrived first as he went ahead of the two.

He took a seat and stared at the countless books available in the Library. Kairi and Val arrived and saw Kaito looking at the books, it looks like he is trying to find something. Kairi then remembered the time she followed Kaito to the Library. He took a lot of books and read them, he might be trying to find something.

"Uhh, Kairi?"

"Ah!, sorry I spaced out" Kairi said.

Kaito heard them and looked at them.

"There is no one around, we can be less careful"

"Okay" Kairi said as she walked towards Kaito, Val followed her closely.

"The second magic of the Shadow Arts, Shadow Bodies" Kaito said.

"Shadow Bodies?, is it a movement type magic?" Kairi asked.

"Correct, by getting in contact with your target, you can put a Shadow Mark, this marks can be consumed. By consuming a mark, you'll appear in the target's shadow". Kaito explained.

"How can we form this Mark?" Kairi asked.

"The same as what I have told you with the Shadow Binding spell, just don't put condensed mana in the circle" Kaito said.

"I see"

"You can try it with your partner" Kaito said as he went to leave.

"But how about the danger of losing our life force!" Kairi shouted.

"I've already placed a spell for stopping that, as soon as an abnormality is spotted at your life force, it shall activate" Kaito replied.

"Just remember, it will only activate once, after that either find or wait for me or risk training it"

Those were Kaito's last words as he left the Library.

Kairi explained to Val what she knew from Kaito.

Even though it looks like Kaito left, he was actually listening at them, even if the table was enchanted so that no one can hear or see from the outside, through the help of the Dark Magic, he managed. This is one of the reasons Kaito pretended to leave. The other one, is because he sensed the presence of someone other than them in the Library. He hid his presence just in case the "Other One" can't find him.

...

Kairi had managed to cast Shadow Bodies while Val had also learned Shadow Binding, without breaking Kaito's spell, this impressed Kaito. Although the "Other One" isn't still moving an inch from what Kaito had pinpointed.

"It's patient" Kaito thought.

Kairi and Val left the Library and was surprised to see Kaito.

"Be careful and mind your surroundings" Kaito said then left the two again.

"What does he mean?" Kairi thought.

"We didn't have the chance to thank him yet" Val said as she looked at Kairi.

"I don't think he minds at all whether we thank him or not" Kairi responded.

...

"You'll soon be mine" a voice said inside the Library.

...

Kairi and Val spent their time with Veronica as they watched the School Competition. They parted afterwards, Veronica went home and Val wants to accompany Kairi home.

"You should go home" Kairi said.

"I will, after you" Val responded.

As the two of them walked at the hallway, a group of cloaked people blocked their path, but this time Kairi recognized their clothes, the Academy's uniform.

"They've also blocked us from behind" Val whispered at Kairi.

"This is bad" Kairi thought. Though she could bind them, she needs to touch their shadows, and it takes time. It will make their ambushers suspicious.

"Just surrender and come with us" one of the cloaked men said.

"This voice" Kairi thought. She knew this voice.

"Jake!" Kairi shouted.

"I'm surprised that you know me just by hearing my voice" Jake said as he removed his cloak.

"What do you want?"

"You've always spent time with the that commoner, you even treat him better that what you treat me!, what does he have that I don't?" Jake shouted.

"I've always given you time, and you always ignored me. This time, I'm not letting you go" Jake said with a wicked smile.

"Let Val go, then I will go with you" Kairi said.

"Oh, that's impossible. If I take her with me, I'll have assurance that you won't back at your words" Jake said as he raised two fingers and pointed at their direction. The cloaked students slowly cornered Val and Kairi, they are chanting defensive spells to block any attack they received. There are a total of 13 students including Jake. 6 at behind and 7 at front. Sooner or later they will catch up with them. Kairi didn't waste chanting large scale destruction spells as she knew Jake would bring magic scrolls to counter them like last time. But low and mid spells can easily be blocked as the enemy has defensive spells. After Kairi and Val got cornered.

"Stop your pointless struggles, nobody can save you" Jake said smiling as he stared at Kairi's body.

Kairi remembered that she has a secret Magic at disposal, even though her chances of activating it is minimal, she could use it to scare Jake's men away. Kairi chanted the first part of the incantations, a large magic circle appeared at the feet of Jake and his men.

"Th-this is!" one of the men said. This is the secret magic that they have collected, how come another family has it?

Jake laughed. The others was confused, they thought that Jake had went mad.

"I know you won't activate that, if you do, we'll die"

Jake said.

"Is-Isn't that what she wants? Jake's men asked?

" If she did, she'll become a sinner and can be killed. Her friend will also stay by her side, but she doesn't want that"Jake explained.

Kairi then stopped chanting as her plan was exploited. As Jake and his men was thinking that they succeeded, the rear guard, are all down, collapsed.

"Wha-What happened??" one of Jake's men said with fear.

"Who dares make an enemy of the Azrec Family!" Jake shouted. He then felt a hand at his shoulder and saw his men on the ground, collapsed. A shadow was holding his shoulder.

"Wha---" before Jake could even finish what he said, the shadow punched him in the face, the punch was so strong that it sent Jake flying, he crashed at a wall, his bones are broken and organs are damaged, his face is barely recognizable. Kairi was surprised and happy that the shadow came to help her again. She even wondered if this shadow is connected to her somehow.

"Thank you again for saving us" Kairi said as she bowed her head down. Vak did the same as Kairi told her what really happened in the rooftop.

The shadow nodded.

"You said that you don't have a name?, why is that?" Kairi asked.

The shadow looked at her, it then looked at itself. It's implying that it wasn't something that is supposed to have a name.

"Then why are you helping us" Kairi asked curiously.

"I--" the shadow then left with astonishing speed.

Kairi and Val stared at the direction the shadow left. The shadow was heading to exit the Academy.
