When I was around ten, I liked to wake up at six in the morning to see the sun rise, and if the sky is pink, I would make a wish. I started doing this because I had a dream in which I made a wish at sunrise and I thought that if I really did it it would work. When I told my parents that they didn't care much and told me it was just a dream, but I liked to keep doing it anyway.
So today when I woke up, the sky was pink when the sun was rising and when that happens, it means that someone, somewhere in the world, is in love. Usually my wishes were futile things like being happy, making new friends, having a pet, normal things that anyone would ask for. But today I wanted to make another kind of wish, so I wished that when the classes returned, I would meet someone who would make my heart pound.
I don't know why I wanted it, I always thought romance stories were stupid, because I don't believe in that kind of love. Things always have a beginning, a middle and an end, and with love it would not be different, but it would be interesting to feel that feeling with someone, a new experience, even though it would one day end.
Today we are going to have a small family gathering, where I will meet my mother's family, which is not just my aunt and her husband. My mom insists that I participate, lately she's been more rigid with me than usual, all this after what happened at the mall, but I don't want to talk about it with her, as I mentioned before, it's not worth it.
- You have half an hour to get ready, let's have breakfast outside. - Mine says as soon as I enter the kitchen, which by the way, already had the furniture in place, now only the living room and bedrooms are left.
- But it's still early. - I say while I drink some water. - Like ... - I look at the clock on the wall above the fridge, it was 9:00 in the morning. - Too early for breakfast.
- I haven't had time to go to the supermarket yet, so there's no food in the cupboards. Unless you want to drink water the rest of the day, I suggest you change.
- Dad isn't coming? - I ask curiously, he is not at home today.
- He is busy. He's looking for new jobs. It will arrive only later, shortly after dinner.
- When are you going to start work?
- I'll start work next month. Now go get ready, we'll be out of here in twenty minutes.
I go to my room, which is still a mess. I'm too lazy to pack my bags and boxes, maybe I'll do it over the weekend.
My graduation was a little late this year, we did it in the penultimate week of December due to some problems that gave students' grades and some had to be held back. My graduation happened a few days ago, but it seems like it was today, it's amazing how I miss everything already.
After getting ready, my mother and I walked to a small cafeteria, it is about 10 meters away from home. I'm not wearing anything, just a sweatshirt, black jeans and small boots for the cold, as the snow has started to fall. It is not very big, but it is very well decorated with pastel colors and small details on each table, and it even has a lot of customers.
We sat at a table at the back of the store and placed our order. My mom chose the traditional Canadian breakfast, and I ordered a cappuccino with scrambled eggs, the waitress thought the order was strange but that's what I used to eat when I lived in Australia.
- You should try to try something from here. - My mom says.
- I like things in Australia more.
- But now we don't live there anymore, you could try to see something new from here. As my sister said, you might like it here.
- Maybe next time. - I say and she looks at me with a look I can't decipher. While being cool with me, she tries to be kind, but I prefer that she doesn't.
After a few minutes, our orders arrive, pancakes for my mom and my cappuccino with scrambled eggs. When I start to eat, I notice that everyone passing by has a look that says "What the hell are you eating" but I don't care, because this is a great combination.
We returned home some time later, until the food reminded me a little of Australia, which comforts me a little.
I helped my mother finish cleaning the rest of the house, now all rooms are in order.
I was saving my guitar when I get a video call on my cell phone, it was Elliot. Answering the call, I was already thinking about calling them.
- Hi, Ayla! - All my friends say in unison.
- Hi people! I'm already missing you.
- So do we! - Amanda says.
- So, how's it going in Canada? Olivia asks.
- Being sincere? I would still prefer to be there with you.
- Seriously? You'll get used to it. - Elliot says.
- Being cold? Certainly not, especially if it has already started to snow. - Lana says. - It's already snowing, right?
- A little, not enough to keep everyone at home.
- And how is the place where you live? - Amanda asks.
- I still haven't had the opportunity to get to know the city well, but my first shopping experience was, how can I say, traumatizing. - I remember that boy who dropped the box with styrofoam on me.
- Seriously? What happened? Olivia asks.
- One of the employees dropped a box with a lot of Styrofoam on top of me.
- Oh, I wish I had seen that. - Elliot says laughing. In fact, everyone was already laughing.
- Ok guys, it was great to see you, but now I need to go. We are going to have a little welcome party and I need to get ready. - I spent so much time organizing everything that I forgot the schedule.
- Okay, but don't forget to tell us everything later. - Olivia says.
- Okay, bye guys. - I wave to them and hang up the phone.
After the shower, I go to the wardrobe to look for something to wear but, it's winter and I don't have many options, so I wear a thin long-sleeved dark blue shirt and a black T-shirt with a constellation print on top, blue jeans dark and a UGG boot I got on my birthday, I leave my hair in a ponytail and that's it, I still don't have many winter clothes since in Australia it was summer.
I go down to the living room and my parents are already dressed, I mean, just my mom, my dad just arrived. My mom is wearing cold clothes, she probably bought them when we were at the mall, when she looks at my clothes, she looks at me indignantly.
- Are you really going to dress like that? Do you know the temperature today?
- I don't have clothes for the cold and your clothes look small on me.
- When we go out I'll buy you something, now let's go.
We walked to my aunt's house and she also looks at me with the same disapproval as my mother, but I give the same answer and we go towards the car, which at first I thought was strange because I thought this party would be at her house, but actually, we're going to her husband's family home, which is in the same city. Their daughter was there but we just greeted each other, she doesn't seem to be the type to like to talk, so that's why.
We arrived a few long thirty minutes later, because in the car my dad was talking to Madison's husband and my mom was talking to Madison, and I was just in my corner.
Arriving at the house, I could see that it was a little bigger and the street had an extra number of cars. When we entered, everyone received us saying "Welcome to Canada", which didn't help me to adapt here. Inside the house I begin to realize that it is really cold, but I cannot demonstrate this to my mother, I do not want to hear any more sermon.
Madison's husband's family is a little big, there were his parents, his brothers and also another aunt of mine called Amelia.
I met almost everyone who was present, my mother's family was also there, some cousins and cousins too, except my father's.
After a long time talking with everyone, I start to feel cold, we are on the balcony, which is a very open place. I was going inside when my mom calls me to meet someone else, this time she was my aunt's best friend, even though I was cold, I went to my mom's and my aunt's side.
- Hi, my name is Hailey. - The woman with black hair and light brown eyes says to my mom and me.
- Hello, my name is Ayla. -
- Aren't you cold dressed only in that shirt? - She is the tenth person who asks me that.
- I'm not well. - Actually, I'm very cold but I won't say that, I don't want to disturb anyone.
-Well, what are you thinking here? Do you like it?
- I haven't had enough time to say whether I like it or not. - The right answer is: I don't like it here.
- I'm sure you'll like it.
- That's what I said to her when she told me that she would like to go back to Australia. - My aunt Madison says.
- When we were organizing this little party, my son said he wouldn't like it because there would be many people he doesn't know, but when we arrived he was excited.
- Speaking of him, where is he? My Aunt Madison asks.
- He is there. - She points to the corner of the porch, where there is a small group of people talking. - Benjamin, come here! - She calls the boy who arrives at the place where we are quickly, and when I see it I realize that it is the same boy who dropped the box with Styrofoam on me.
- This is my son, Benjamin. - Hailey says.
He looks at me with surprise and my look is no different. Really? Him? It really can't get any worse.
- Hi! - My mom says to the boy standing in front of me, I think she doesn't remember him.
- Hello, Mrs. Jones. - He says greeting my mother and aunt, but I just stare at him.
- You grew up since the last time I saw you, Benjamin. - Madison says.
- Hello, Ayla. - He says with a smile on his face staring at me.
I really wish I never came to Canada.
