Kat had been walking for a couple of days amidst the scorching heat. It made her pant and worst of all drowsy, which wasn't good considering her situation.
Up was the burning sun, down was the never ending grains of arid and thick sand. She had abandoned her boots a while back after she had painfully figured out that pure leather and heat didn't go so well together.
Her dry, blistered toes sank deeper and deeper with every step she took. It was a calm night now, a soft, heavenly breeze flew up her shirt and ruffled her knotty, damp (with sweat) hair. She felt as if it was the only thing keeping her going. She let herself bask in the gentle current occasionally lifting her shirt soothing her injured body.
The shuffle of feet shifting in the sand snapped her into action as she withdrew the sharpened blade and stood like the trained assassin she was. Her eyes scanned the perimeter finding nothing, nothing but sand!
The wind whistled in her ears as she took in a breath, muscular arms wrapped themselves around her and tackled her to the ground as she grunted and jammed her elbow into the intruders ribs. This caused him to break his hold as Kat leapt away from him and snarled, "who are you".
The man was about in his mid twenties, had long blonde hair tied back into a low ponytail and carried a blade that resembled her own.
"Oh Kat how you have grown, I remember when you came into the institute as the small, stupid girl who didn't know how to use her gift appropriately, and look at you now" he cheekily almost with admiration said.
"Lucifer, of course they sent you, one of the best, top of the institute ,highest in your class-oh,wait I forgot, all that...after I joined and became, well a better you" she chuckled.
He made a low growl at that and she saw his strong grip tighten around the smooth handle of the weapon.
Pleased with herself, Katherine smiled sweetly and giggled "well I think I'd better go now Lucifer, I have a few jobs to do".
Katherine dropped to the floor as a sharp pain shook her to the core, she cautiously peered at the huge gash of blood seeping through her shirt. Lucifer was immediately at her side and lifted her shirt revealing a long cut across her stomach.
"Shit" he exclaimed, examining the blood covered knife (her blood) then looking back up to her.
"Great, somewhere in all that adrenalin I was going through you stabbed me" she told.
"Shit, I'm sorry, here let me help" his arms held her waist before she slapped him on his muscular shoulder and angrily said "get of,I can take care of myself Lucifer".
"Yeah right, of course you can, with all that blood coming out of you, you definitely won't collapse on your way to-wait,where are you of to"? he questioned.
"None of your business loser, now go away" Kat ripped a piece of her shirt and tied it around her stomach to prevent more blood loss.
Lucifer's hands held hers as she struggled to tie the knot "listen, I know we haven't always got along and we fought almost everyday, but you were still my best friend and yes, it did and still bothers me that you chose this life instead of the life you would have had back home, but after you left I realised that was your decision to make and not anyone else's,so let me help you, please Kat"
Kat, it had been so long after someone had called her that, it brought up memories, good, bad, and the ugly. She did miss her friend, her pal, her anchor amidst the raging tempest.
"Fine, but don't get in the way" she sighed.
"Wouldn't dream of it" he hoisted her up of the ground into his warm arms as she wrapped herself around him.
"Wouldn't dream of it" she mimicked him as he sent her a look of disbelief.
"Walk faster" she ordered him-and said with a smile.
"Ahh Kat, young Kat, the days of you ordering me around are so over...thankfully I might add" he cheered.
"You wish loser" she sank into a deep, soothing sleep to the smooth rhythm of his long, powerful strides and beating of his heart.
