Oliver couldn't help but laugh. He was walking down the road back to his home. The school bus wasn't an option, as he was now spending extra time at school with Elaine and Jack. For that entire afternoon, Oliver struggled to keep up with them but eventually accomplished what he had desired to do. Push his body to the physical limit and now his body felt stiff to the bone. He had a plan set and if things worked out, the rewards would be great.
He placed his phone back into his pocket and admired the setting sun in the distance. Cars drove by, tree branches swayed in the breeze, people walked around completely undisturbed by the serenity of their neighborhood.
Things were so peaceful. He couldn't believe what the world had gone through, the atrocities committed by so many for selfish interest, that monsters invaded the world every passing minute, humans facing extinction in the very face yet pretended it was not there. They intertwined lies in this very peace brought by the 'heroes'. How depressing it was to think of.
Oliver walked past a road crossing and was completely oblivious to a pair of shifty eyes following him from behind the dark lenses of sunglasses. The person in question sat on the porch of an average white suburban home. An opened home magazine in her hands and a loving little puppy cuddling in the cradle between her legs. She looked non-special other than the amount of makeup covering her face and a single bandage on the bridge of her nose, large and very noticeable.
Her act was completely unconvincing, but few paid her attention, including the unaware Oliver Smith. She was chewing on a stick of gum with the rest of the packet next to her. Something was bothering her as she watched Oliver disappear around the corner towards his own home. Muttering quietly to herself, she placed down her mag and began patting her sleeping pup.
"I doubt he can... but if he doesn't, we're all doomed. We must make a sacrifice, Oliver Smith. It absolutely must be made."
***************************
Oliver got home and found his mom sitting on the rocking chair on the porch with yet another toothpick wedged between her lips. She was wearing a peach cashmere sweater and baggy jeans, looking a whole ten years younger, with her hair freshly done as well.
"Hey champ."
Oliver smiled and was about to enter the house when his mom stopped him.
"Your father's waiting for you in the garden. Best put your bag here with me and go see him."
Oliver felt odd at those vague words but did as his mom told him. He left his bag on the porch and walked to the back of the house. It was some years back when his mom left her job as a nurse at the local veterinary clinic and became a stay at home mom. She quickly tired of it, though... having nothing to do. Then it was Oliver's dad who suggested she keep a garden, and so she did.
It was just a small garden though, and it wasn't even for food growing but flowers. Yet Oliver's mom committed to it so amazingly well that Oliver and his dad no longer worried for her. Oliver now stood behind the house and there was his father, crouching beside a withering red rose in the flower bed. It was still winter and so the flowers would suffer, yet Oliver knew his mom would still care for them.
"Good to see you, champ."
"Hey dad."
Oliver walked over to his dad, who was now standing up to his full height and had a bright smile on his face. Today he was wearing a big grey T-shirt with a logo of a black rose in the center. His thick bulging arms seemed to stretch the small sleeves of the shirt, but Oliver never knew a shirt to fit his dad. His pants were also grey, but they were baggy. He looked like any normal dad with a loveable, goofy nature.
"What's up, dad?"
Jason Smith rubbed his neck awkwardly while still having that smile on his face. But finally he couldn't stand it anymore.
"I didn't want to push it... I honestly wanted for you to approach me when you were comfortable, if not me, then maybe your mother, but..."
Oliver was very confused and looking at him, Jason Smith could no longer hide it.
"It's about your telekinesis champ... answer me honestly, why haven't we talked about it yet?"
Oliver finally understood. After his ability awakening, he had not even once attempted to discuss his powers with anyone. Not his father, not his classmate that he had made plans to take the gene test with, not his mom and not even himself. It mystified him.
Why was that?
Awakening an ability was the whole point he had taken the gene test. Telekinesis was his assumed ability, something incredibly rare, but not once after that day had it popped into his mind again. It felt so eerily like forgetting about a boring birthday gift from your aunt or uncle. But the gift was something you had always wanted for your entire life, worth more than anything else in your possession.
Something wasn't right here. His mind was absolutely not supposed to forget about an ability like that.
"Umm... champ, look, I understand if you'd prefer to not get advice from a geezer like me. But still... hear me out, will ya?"
Oliver snapped out of his reverie as his father cleared his throat and pointed a finger at Oliver's chest. He then began explaining something.
"There's something that all third generation 'evolved' have for using their powers. I mean the psychics, by the way."
"Right..."
"We call it a Personal Boundary Field. Basically, it's like a permanently existing space surrounding an 'evolved'. So long as it's within the range of one's Personal Boundary Field, an 'evolved' can use their ability."
He then made a flick of his finger and Oliver's shirt pulled tight at his back and reached for Jason Smith's outstretched finger.
"Personal Boundary Fields are a bit of a difficult topic to discuss at your age, so just think of it as the basics for ability use. Anyway, since you and I are telekinesis users, it basically means we can move matter using our minds so long as it is within our Personal Boundary Field."
"I understand."
Jason Smith smiled. His son really appeared like he was understanding. After releasing his pull on Oliver's shirt, it returned to normal, yet for whatever reason, it seemed tighter than what Jason remembered the last time Oliver wore the same shirt a week ago.
{Maybe he's going through a growth spurt.}
"Abilities are diverse and too many to count, but so long as it's an ability using mental power, then you must have a Personal Boundary Field. I mentioned it exists permanently, but that also has a few disadvantages."
Jason Smith looked down at the flower bed and blinked. The withered rose uprooted itself from the wet soil and flew to the height of Jason's shoulder, hovering in the air silently.
"Watch."
The rose flew over the picket fence and hovered over the street, hovering farther and farther from the pair. It was only once it reached above a road junction a far distance away when it plummeted to the ground.
"Now guess what just happened."
"I... don't know."
Jason Smith smiled and placed his hands in his pants' pockets. It was a gesture expressing amusement.
"I pushed the rose out of the range of my pbf. About two hundred metres to be exact."
Oliver's eyes opened wide as it finally struck him. Jason chuckled at this.
"You think you can get by with that? I'm not exactly giving the best explanation, but we can continue another time. Sound good?"
Oliver smiled as he looked down at the flower bed and the withering flowers.
"Yea... I think I get it now."
