Chapter 7 - Chapter 6: Great Loss

I woke up in the woods with nothing around me but the tall, green trees. It was quiet...to quiet. I looked at myself and noticed I was naked, and that it was morning. I smiled and started making my way back to the mansion. When I arrived I knocked on the door, when it opened my grandmother appeared with a blanket to cover myself up until I put on proper clothes. She gave me a strange look and said, "Did you have fun, dear?" I smiled suspiciously and asked, "Yes, but how did you get here so fast? I turned back." Grandmother laughed and so did a voice appearing outing of the blue from my living room. "You've been gone for three days Amelia!" James said from the corner. A strange look crossed over his face. Almost as if he was concerned or scared. "Why are you both looking at me like that?" I asked them. My grandmother put her hand on my shoulder and directed me to the wash room where I looked in the mirror, revealing the blood I was still covered in. Looking as fresh as when she poured it on me. "I suppose I should clean up!" I said innocently. Grandmother nodded so I closed the door behind me and turned on the shower to warm up the water. I felt so cold, not in a bad way, but I'm not warm like I used to be. Once I finished cleaning the blood off of me I wrapped up in a cloth towel and ran upstairs to my bedroom to get dressed. I put on a dark, forest green colored dress. The lace outlined the skirt of my puffy dress leading all the way up to the top of my black corset. Miss Maya helped me tie the strings. I fixed my hair to a neat curl and walked out of my room to see my grandmother and James in a more proper manner. I walked out and they both once again stared at me. I stood beside James and said, "You stayed..." He smirked and replied, "I told you I would!" Grandmother rolled her aged eyes and said, "Enough you two. We have real matters to address, well me and Amelia do." I glared heavily at her and replied, "James spent three days here to wait for me. You can show some kindness!" Grandmother smiled sarcastically and continued, "Fine, then tell me Amelia, did you hear what I said to you right before you turned?" I thought for a short while and finally suspiciously recalled, "You told me I was the true alpha, but what does that mean?" James smiled at me, amazed, and cut in, "It means you're the leader of your pack! Everyone obeys you no matter what! That's incredible." I stared at them, confused and frightened. Then grandmother said, "It also means that you have the most power of all of us. The strongest, fastest, and the deadliest of our pack. Amelia, listen to me, you must do me a favor..." Grandmother was acting strange, as if she didn't want to tell me what she has to say. I raised my eyebrows, egging her on. She gulped as she said, "As part of the agreement your father had with the King, whomever the true alpha is must kill off half of the pack. It's in the contract he signed, I'm sorry sweetheart." My heart, beating from my chest, my skull, pounding with this new knowledge. I scoffed and said, "I get that I'm new to this whole werewolf thing, but I'm pretty sure a pack is supposed to stay together no matter what! And they're my family, I won't send them to their deaths, let alone be the one that causes it!" Grandmother nodded with a smile and replied, "That's alright dear. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do..." I eyes her suspiciously at her quick change of heart. Without leaving my gaze from her I said, "James, I need to speak with you for a moment. In private!" We turned our backs to my grandmother and walked into the kitchen. "What is it?" He asked. I quickly answered, "I think somethings wrong with my grandmother. She doesn't act like this, ever. She's a stubborn woman and wouldn't give up on her persuasion so quickly! It's as strange thing." James laughed slightly and replied, "I believe that's because you're her alpha too! She listens to you without argument or question." I scrunched my face and after a few moment I was about to continue my suspicions until we heard a door slam. James and I ran into the living room to find my grandmother has left. We immediately headed out the door to see if we could find her, but she was out of sight. Into the forests I suppose. "She's fast for an old woman!" James said. I bit my lip nervously and said, "I can smell her scent. She went north, towards my families cabins. Let's go!" As James followed behind me trying to keep up with my fast pace he asked, "How did you know that?" Out of breath, I replied, "I told you, I can smell her." As we continued running we came across a clearing in the forest, it's near the cabins. I remember playing with my cousins out here. I stopped so James and I could catch our breaths, then we heard it. Screams coming from the direction of the cabins. I gave James a frightened look and charged off towards the buildings. When I got there I saw that there was a campfire, everyone out here likes doing this type of stuff. My father didn't though, he preferred indoors and fancy, that's why we're the only land owners in our family. James and I walked closer to the fire and saw something in it. Bodies! It wasn't to late to identify their smells. "My uncle Jeremy and aunt Kaelin!" I said in a fragile voice. When I heard more screams coming from my other families cabin I ran as fast as I could. I caught my grandmother. She looked possessed, or manipulated. I ran to her and grabbed her shoulders, as I stared into her eyes I saw nothing. My grandmother wasn't there anymore, whatever this was has overpowered her. I gulped and whispered, "I'm sorry." My now stronger hands were able to snap her neck, leaving her to lay on the floor dead. A tear ran down my face as I turned to see both aunt Terra and aunt Lily on the floor with their hearts removed from their chest! I quickly said to James in my whimpering voice, "Grab one and I'll get the other." Without question he listened to me. Dragging one body behind me, I layed my aunts in the fire. Shortly followed by grandmother. Tears ran down my cheeks, then I saw them. My two cousins, Penelope and Kara. They were confused but also had an idea as to what had happened. The smell of burning bodies that anybody could smell from miles away hunted to them that their parents are gone. "I'm so sorry girls. Grandmother went bonkers and she made it here before I did. They're gone." Each other then started crying. I hate this, even though Kara and I are the same age it's still isn't right. Especially for Penelope, she's only 15. "Come back to the mansion with James and I, I'll send some servants to clean up around here!" Kara nodded and dragged Penelope with here. I turned to James and whispered, "They'll be okay." He put his arm around me as we walked back to the mansion. We all sat in the living room in silence as we mourned our family members. James has to leave for business with the King, whom I'll get to later, so it was just us three. I couldn't possibly let them live by themselves out there, and to be honest I couldn't exactly imagine myself in the mansion all alone, so I offered for them to stay here with me. "We'd love to stay here Amelia, thank you. After this we can't go back, not now, not ever!" I smiled sincerely and replied quietly, "I'll send someone for your things..." The rest of the night was quiet and awkward. We just have to get through this together as a family! We'll make it out the other side...I know it!
