"Okay kid, here is the lot of it. This box is a one way ticket to getting to Outter World, the only problem is you gotta be worthy to wield the box. Now don't panic, you just gotta be funny and make sure it sho...". "Let me stop you right there". I pause and look at the box. It was black with blue markings inscribed all over it. It must have been a form of writing. "So your telling me this box is whats gonna get me to Outter World. Just like that"? "Kid, you gotta understand what your getting into, this isn't an ordinary type of box you see. This box has the power to put a lot of hurt in the world if taken lightly". "Yeah Yeah I get it now give me the box so I can be on my way old man".
"Patience you little asshole, I didn't even tell you how to use the damn thing yet. Now listen as closely as your human attention span can allow you. In order to get into Outter World you need to be able to access the content in this box. In order to do that you need to recite the scriptures on the box". He looks up at me raising both his eyebrows to see if I understood what he was saying. To be honest I lost him at the content part.
"There are hundreds of scriptures to recite on the box and you can change the order at which they are spoken in order to manipulate the effects. Kinda like a rubik's cube but with symbols instead of colors, you got that kid"? I nod and he continues on. "Now each individual box gives you a finite set of supernatural abilities, in otherwards when you access the box you gain access to the power of a Warden. The Wardens are the creators of the boxes and the rulers of the Outter and Inner World". He gives me the same, are you with me side eye. "Wait so this isn't the only box"? I say in confusion.
"Good question". A Hysterical grin reappears on his face once again. "Here's where it gets interesting. This box allows you to access the ability of the Warden who created it, therefore when you access it, you will get some insight on he or she's abilities. This means that the power you receive isn't taylored to one person, and just because you can access it doesn't mean you can use it to its fullest potential. Think of the boxes and its wielder as the rulers helping hands. The Wardens goal is to create balance between good and evil, there can't be too much or too little of each. This also means that the Wardens need more than one box to achieve this".
"So there are others with this power"? The words fall out of my lips like a soft waterfall. " Exactly". The Man says, pointing at me with a grin. " All with individual and unique abilities. A little secret, not all Wardens want flowers and roses in our dystopian society. Some Wardens give their boxes away in hope to spread pure hatred and evil". "Why would they do that"? I say in shock. "Because it promotes balance. you see without evil, goodness will outbalance the laws of the worlds, so to combat this, the Wardens lend boxes into the hands of evildoers in hope to even the odds".
"That makes sense, I guess". I say hesitantly. "Umm... on second thought I don't think im cut out for this, I don't even know the Warden that box belongs too. Maybe you should give it to someone more worthy ya know, someone who doesn't live in a junkyard". I wear an innocent little kid expression on my face. "I'm not gonna lie to ya, i've been looking for a wielder to use the box for ages and not a single one has a pure enough heart. Your my last chance. You don't gotta know the Warden to wield the power". He says while grasping my shoulders and staring into my eyes, his eyes darting left in right between mine.
"Look the Wardens are like 2 sides of the same coin. They hate each other and they both want more power and control over each other. They can't agree on a damn thing. You understand what i'm saying? They lost sight on why they created this ruined system in the first place. They divided us, Inner world is crammed with poverty and Outter World is hungry for power. But I believe with this box we might have a chance".
"Look old man, I just don't think im ready for all that, i'm just a runaway escavet who has big dreams that will never come true". I push him off and look to the ground in sorrow. "So the little runt is an escavet huh"? the man begins to paste back and forth with his thumb and index finger on his chin, kicking away the cans and bottles in his path. A look of realization paints itself on his face. " I have an idea"!
"How about you keep the box with you, sleep on our negotiation, and in return if you decide to take the box with you to Outter World, I will teach you a few words over time. What do ya think? It's a win for the both of us, your dream comes true, you learn how to read and you help me with the box". He gives me the puppy eyes. "Okay fine! Just stop looking at me like that your giving me the creeps old geezer". "That's the spirit kid, i'll be back tomorrow at noon, make sure you,ve decided, and watch out for the worms, they lurk at night". He shows off his mysterious grin as he turns around and begins to skip into the distance.
Soon he is long gone in the dreadful fog surrounding the junkyard. Who was he, and what is this box really? I stare at the box in my hand. It was slightly smaller than a rubix cube in size and gave off an ominous vibe. "It doesn't matter." I repeat those words in my head several times until I can muster up the strength to move forward. I need to keep focus and remember, i'm not just doing this for me. There is someone whom I love with a passion. And she's waiting for me, somewhere out there, and i'm coming there soon.
