Evelina's eyes fluttered open. Staring at the ceiling, she put a hand over her head before closing her eyes again, cherishing the calmness within her mind. Preserving the moment's sanity.
She was not on her bed, but in a familiar room she had also once woken up to. The very same one where she found Ruben hiding just a few beds away from her. She recalled his easy presence, how he was the first to make her laugh. But he was not here now. It was alright. The child needed to stay far away from her, especially with her current state.
The worst part of just laying there was that she could remember everything that happened before.
She recalled their frightened expressions. Mouths open, eyes wide, bodies frozen and trembling -- she did not care then for she was out of control. All she could see was food.
