The lesser vamps wouldn't be able to equal her pace. She was quick, and she was not dead. The child's weight brought her no inconvenience, but… No, she did not want to admit it. She did not want to let go.
Hearing faint stomps from behind, she took a swift glance. The sky painted warmth, concordant to the witch's bright face and quick breaths.
Evelina stopped.

His wide brown eyes locked with the vampiress'. West shook his head, separating their linked hands as he struggled to chase his breath.
