I took deep sigh as I set aside the files I had just organized. The neat pile placed next to the other side of messy folders, with papers spilling out of them, which was sitting on the opposite end of my desk. Deciding to take a break, I stood up and walked over to the break room. Upon walking in, the heavy scent of coffee clogged the air. I sighed once more.
It had only been a couple weeks since I started this new job as a office worker, but the amount of work I had was that of from five months! I filled my mug with tea as I tried to ignore the coffee scented room. The smell alone would be what gave me a headache, I sat at the table in the break room as another one of my colleagues walked in.
"Oh Eva, what are you still doing here? Aren't your office hours over by now?" My coworker- and also close friend- Mave spoke up. I turned to face her and she gasped.
"You look deader than the dead! When have you last slept??" She asked concernedly. I gave her a sarcastic smile as my eyes dropped.
"Thanks." I said unenthusiastically. "I still have about three packs of folders to do before Friday afternoon. I was thinking of cramming more in before Wednesday but," I yawned before sipping my tea. She shook her head while clicking her tongue before grabbing a mug, walking towards the coffee machine.
"Man... that must suck! If it helps, I can probably take a pile off your hands if I'm able up to finish this assignment I'm on." She said before sipping her coffee. I quickly placed my mug down before turning to her, my eyes glimmering.
"Really??? I wound love if you were able to." I said. She rolled her eyes before taking another sip of her coffee.
"Well, that's only if I finish my assignment first." She repeated. I nodded my head and smiled.
"Either way, even if you can't help, thank you for the offer!" I said. She walked over to me and pinched my cheek, grinning.
"You are just too sweet!" She mushed with a laugh. Letting go, she grabbed her mug.
"In that case I better start getting back to work! Have a good night Eva!" She waved. I nodded and waved back.
"See you!" I said, following behind her to my own desk to pack up. Mave was three years older than me. In this section of the office, she was the only person close to my age. Because of that, we grew quite close over the weeks that I've been working here. So far, everyone had been treating me just fine! However, that was most likely because of my child like features. Although I was rather tall, I had a rounded cheeks with big lips. My eyes are always scanning around curiously I've been told, making me seem more of a child than ever.
It isn't THAT upsetting, but it does get uncomfortable hearing these remarks from people my age. Nonetheless, I still work hard and try my best in all that I do.
Quickly collecting my things, I grabbed my bag and phone. After arranging my desk a bit more, I set out to go home. Checking my watch, I saw that the time was already to 11 pm. I sighed and quickly hurried downstairs. I called a taxi and quickly put in my address as the driver drove me back to my apartment. As the driver drove, A strange sent made its way to my nose. I awkwardly turned away to look out of the window. Carefully, I sheepishly covered my nose with my hand. I didn't want to seem rude by asking for the vent to be turned on.. so I stayed like that the entire car ride.
It had been about four years since I started living on my own. Immediately after high school, I started looking into dorms close by to the colleges I'd been accepted to. Moving out was probably the biggest turning points in my life. I sighed heavily once more, remembering everything that happened when I lived with my mom.. I couldn't help but shudder. I took a deep breath to quickly calm my shaking hands.
It was over, there was no need to continue living in the past.
"Miss?" The voice of the driver quickly woke me up from my thoughts. I apologized before quickly pulling out my wallet to pay. The driver quickly shook his head.
"No miss it is quite alright, you do not need to pay." He said. Confused I stared at him.
"I- I'm sorry? What do you mean I don't need to pay?"
"I was already off duty when I drove you here it wouldn't be right getting paid after hours." The old man smiled at me. Weirded out by the situation I nodded before thanking him repeatedly and returning my wallet to my purse. Looking back I watched as the taxi drove off. I shuddered again.
Off duty??? Does that mean I just got into the wrong taxi? I had called them to make sure and they said they were 24-hours service. But the license plate was the same... I shook my head and quickly walked into the apartment building.
"How weird.." I mumbled to myself. I rushed into the elevator and took another breath. I could already feel another headache growing, and the buzzing elevator sound didn't make anything better. After arriving at the seventh floor, I quickly rushed to my apartment door and unlocked it.
The familiar warmth welcomed me in as I was engulfed into the scent of vanilla. I couldn't help but smile to myself. I had managed to get such a good apartment for an amazing deal. A little bit of fixing up here and there, but over all, it was a lovely place to call home!
I quickly freshened up and changed to my pjs before sitting on the couch with my second cup of tea. I looked at the time.
"Already 12?!? How long was that car ride?" I sighed deeply before grabbing my laptop.
"Looks like I'm going to be going to bed late.. again." I groaned but quickly pulled myself together. I took a deep breath and took a big gulp of my cup of water.
"You can do it!" I said to myself. I opened my laptop and was about to begin when my vision suddenly blurred. I winced and held my head in my hand. Fear quickly crept up my heart.
"What in the....?!?!"
Before I could finish, the room around me faded into dark spots as my throat closed. I quickly tried to lay back on the couch but it only made it worse, my throat strings tugged and I could no longer keep conscious. I could hear the ringing of my phone. Looking over, I saw Mave's number pop up. Which was the last thing I saw before passing out.
