Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 - Hidden Powers

"What?!" I questioned.

"I'm working on the harbor as a boat tourist for parasailing and stuff like that." he answered, now happy.

"Oh, that's great, Shon! Will you give your buddies a discount?" I winked with an evil look and bumped his elbow.

"No, I can't," He said laughing. "And Ian already asked me that," he pointed out.

We joined the others and ate our food.

"Hey, did Shon tell ya about his new job yet, Fish Bait?" asked Ian, clearly trying to start something.

"Yeah, he did earlier." I answered.

"Well… me and Kori got jobs too. We're working together."

"Oh, that's awesome! Where?"

"This new bar and grill is located on the marina, close to my house because I live in a boat house, ya know?"

"Yeah, I understand."

"It's also close to my house too, near the marina, since I live in the city!" pointed out Kori.

While Kori and Ceon live at his mother's house because their dad is gone. Curtis lives with Kori and Ceon. Ian lives in a big boat house, it's kind of like a yacht but not quite. Shon lives in his own apartment with a local pool.

"I'm glad it worked out for all of you. Guess I have to "fire" you now, Shon. You can't work double time, now can you?"

"I can."

"No, no, I got it taken care of. You work at your new job, and I'll work mine. My house isn't even close to here."

"But-"

"No, it's fine, really." I wave off Shon's worry and concern about this before I can think twice.

Suddenly, the aroma of the atmosphere changes and everyone is looking at me, enjoying my chocolate frosty.

"What?" I ask, puzzled.

"Come with me, now. "Shon said, grabbing my uninjured arm and letting my frosty fall to the ground. He runs me to the bathroom and looks at my hurt arm. Somehow it started to bleed again. Bleeding quite a lot I should say.

"How did it reopen?" I asked while Shon was replacing the bloody bandages with new ones.

"I don't know," He answered flatly.

Responding to my silence, Shon glanced up at me. "Um, can you leave real quick please? I have to do something." I asked

"Um, sure" he left and closed the door. I use my syren powers to heal my arm because it would only get worse. I cleaned up and took off the bangadges. I opened the door and looked at Shon's puzzled face.

"How? It's all healed?" he asked.

"It's a secret." It is a secret. That's why I can't tell him. I rarely use this healing stuff on me because it can be very dangerous. I throw away the bandgadges when Shon comes up behind me.

"You really are something, aren't you?" he asked while hugging me from behind.

"I sure am," I answered and playfully poked his nose.

"Sorry about the frosty, I panicked."

"Oh, it's fine."

I don't know if Shon is getting suspicious or not, but I have too many things on my mind to worry about his suspicions right now.

"I can get you a new one," he offered.

"No it's fine, I was pretty much done with it anyway."

"You sure?" he asked.

"Yeah, besides I need to go home and start working."

I head outside the front door and grab my board. "Well, see you later," I said while walking home.

"Let me drive you," Shon offered as he opened his car door. I accepted because it would be faster and more efficient.

"Thanks," I said when he started driving to my house.

Once I get to my house I take my board and wave goodbye to Shon. I get inside and only then does Shon leave to go back home. Sometimes he can be so persistent it annoys me. I texted Aunt Sabine about the competition and opened up shop.

I worked until it was closing time. I closed up shop and organized what needed to be. I cleaned up and got things ready for tomorrow. Since all of my friends have jobs now, I have to count on myself. I got ready for bed and locked up the place and stood on my balcony that overlooked the ocean. I saw the stars shimmering and the waves coming up the shore then receding on beat. I then went to bed.

I woke up to the sunday sun, and started getting ready for work. I opened the shop on time at 8:00 am and people started coming in and out. Business was running smoothly, until he came in. He looked around for me and waved to me.

"Hey Lyra, how are you doing after yesterday? Sore? Because I am."

It was Jake the winner. What does he want with me? "I'm good, do you need help finding what you need?"

"About that. I was wondering if you would like to go on that winning prize cruise with me?"

"Um when is it?"

"Next week."

"Do you not have school or a job or anything?"

"No, I graduated last year and I live alone. I don't have a job because I don't want to go to college. So what about it?"

"Oh, I'm sorry but I'll have to pass. I have so many things to do here that I couldn't just leave."

"I was afraid you'd say that with your boyfriend and everything."

"Boy… boyfriend? I think you're mistaken. We're just friends."

"Sure. keep telling yourself that. Well toodaloo." Jake waved as he left.

That was it?

When he said that Shon was my "boyfriend" my cheeks started to get hot and my stomach had a weird feeling to it, but I pushed it aside because I can't risk losing him. I continued to work.
