Chapter 18 - Jailbreak

Yumi sat at the table in the dark room that she'd gotten used to by now. She heard the sound of keys unlocking the door. She didn't lift up her head. She already knew who it was. Investigator Takeshi. He closed the door behind him and sat down.

"How have you been holding up in here?" he asked her.

Yumi refused to speak.

Takeshi sighed. "You're not making this any easier. You still haven't given up any information that I can use. At this point we might as well send you to prison."

More silence.

Takeshi shook his head hopelessly. "Well. Today is your last day in this room. We're transporting you to a facility that will keep you on lockdown twenty-four seven, so prepare yourself." With that he stood up and left the room. Yumi heard the door lock.

Takeshi walked to his office. He shut the door and sat down in his chair. In front of him was a bulletin board with a multitude of news articles and photos tacked on to it. They all related to the cases he was working on. He leaned back in the chair with his hands behind his head. "Ghosts huh... I wonder if I'm taking it too far... Maybe Yumi really is innocent. But I can't take the chance until I know for sure. After all she was the only one at the crime scene other than Sato Kasumi. It just doesn't make sense. If she didn't do it then why not just say who did?"

Takeshi began to doze off in his chair. Roughly in the next five minutes, there was a commotion going on that came from outside his office. The sirens blared throughout the station. Takeshi jolted up and ran out his door. All of the officers were out of their seats with their guns in hand, pointed at one person. Takeshi recognized him immediately. "Murakami Kouta..."

Takeshi looked at one of the officers. "What happened?!"

"I don't know myself! The kid just walked right through the wall!!"

"What?!" Takeshi said.

"Drop to the floor and don't move!!" an officer said.

Kouta scowled. "Where is Kurihara Takeshi."

Takeshi stepped forward. "I'm right here. And what is wrong with you? Breaking in here like this! You're under arrest!!"

Kouta walked up to him until they were only a few feet apart. "Where's Yumi?!" he yelled, picking Takeshi up by his shirt.

Takeshi quickly drew his pistol and aimed it at Kouta's chest. "Let me go or I'll shoot!"

Kouta swiftly snatched the gun, crushed it, and threw it to the side. Then her heard banging on a door to the back of the station.

"Kouta?! Kouta!! It's me!! I'm here!! I'm stuck in this room!!"

"Yumi!" Kouta exclaimed. He dropped Takeshi and ran to the back.

Takeshi groaned. "Shoot him! Don't let him take the girl!!"

The officers began firing. Kouta hid behind a square pillar as bullets whizzed past. There was more banging on the door.

"Kouta?! Are you out there?! Answer me!!"

Directly in front of Kouta was the room where Yumi was. But the only door to it was on the right side of the wall. He'd be right in the vicinity of the police's bullets.

He focused on the wall in front of him. He ran straight at it and passed through the wall.

Yumi looked to her right. "Kouta!!" she ran to him, clinging into his arms. She started crying. "I knew it was you, I could feel it! I thought that I would be taken away..."

Kouta held on to her tight. He bent down, hugging on to her. "I'm sorry Yumi. This was all my fault. They won't take you again. I promise."

Takeshi kicked down the door. "There you are! Don't move! How did you pass through the wall?!" He had another pistol aimed at Kouta.

Yumi had her head on Kouta's shoulder. Kouta felt her shivering. It made him angry. "How long were you in here?" he asked Yumi.

"Over a week." she said.

Takeshi's heart raced. "I saw it! I saw it with my own two eyes! He passed through the wall like...like a ghost!"

Takeshi tensed. "Put her down! I have questions I want to ask you!"

Kouta's eyes glowed. "We have nothing to talk about. I won't forgive you for this!"

Takeshi gritted his teeth. "Then I have no choice but to shoot!"

pow!! pow!! pow!! pow!!

Takeshi emptied the whole clip. Kouta dodged all the bullets. He ran at Takeshi and kicked him in his chest. Takeshi hit the wall and went unconscious. Kouta continued to pass through the door back into the police station's main room.

pow!! pow!! pow!! pow!! pow!! pow!!

Shots were fired everywhere. Kouta made a sharp left and passed through the wall. He came outside. Police sirens could be heard blaring through the air. Backup was called.

Kouta held Yumi tight as he ran up a wall and hopped onto the roof. He started running away, jumping from roof to roof. Bullets whizzed past his head as he ran as fast as he could. Eventually he started flying away.

Yumi dared to lift her head up to look down. "You're...flying?"

Kouta made it a safe distance away, then landed on a backstreet somewhere. He let Yumi down.

Yumi looked around her. She smiled. "I'm outside, finally. Kouta thank you-" She saw Kouta sitting down with his back against the wall, head down. He was crying.

"I was so scared... I heard about what happened to you and Kasumi and I got so scared! If something bad happened to either one of you I wouldn't know what I'd do with myself... It was all my fault to begin with... Now all of us are gonna be wanted criminals and... everything's a mess!!"

Yumi sat down next to him and rested against his shoulder. "It's okay. I'm fine now. You saved me, so I'm fine with whatever happens next. We'll all be alright. We have to be."

--

Takeshi woke up with the other officers crowded around him. His vision was dizzy for a moment, but he came to. "Huh... what..? Kouta! Where did he go?!" Takeshi got up. He put his hand on the wall to brace.

"What happened to you?" a female officer said.

Takeshi slowly walked out of the door. "I was shooting at Kouta and then...he kicked me. I hit the wall and blacked out."

"Your brain was rattled from the impact. It's good you're okay. You probably got a minor concussion though. I can call the ambulance if you want-"

Takeshi held a hand up. "No! No. I'm fine. I don't have time for rest. Make sure this story gets out to the news. Spread it everywhere! I want every corner of Tokyo looking for Sato Kasumi, Miyazaki Yumi, and Murakami Kouta."
