Chereads / The Newfound Prince of Darkness / Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Cold

Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Cold

Jarod let out a tiny moan of annoyance as the alarm clock sitting on a small pedestal next to his bed began blaring, effectively taking the boy out of his dreamless sleep. He slapped the button and sat up, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. He got out of bed and put on a pair of blue jeans with a long sleeve black shirt. He looked in the mirror and at his messy light grey hair, but paid it no mind, not caring about it.

He looked outside his window and saw the sky blanketed in thick grey clouds that floated in the air, a bit of frost on the window pane. "It might snow," He said a bit bitterly. He hated it when it snowed because it just meant that school was cancelled and he would have to stay home.

He thought about the previous day and guessed that it was just an elaborate prank held by a group of teenagers that really just wanted to spite him, though the knife throwing was a bit much if he were to be asked personally, though knowing his life, he wasn't.

He quickly slid out of the house, thanking whatever God there was that both of his guardians were passed out on the couch surrounded by dozens of empty beer bottles. The cold air hit his lungs and he took a deep breath before letting it all out in a long exhale, a small smile appearing on his face before he began the trip to school.

Monday was a terrible day in the eyes of the world, but Jarod liked it. He may have hated the way he was treated at school but it was definitely a better alternative than staying at home where he would have to deal with not just one, but two ticking time bombs on the verge of exploding.

Arriving at school, Jarod felt his phone buzz in his pocket before pulling it out and seeing that it was a text message from Ryan. It read, 'Not making it to school today, got sick Sunday night and my mom is forcing me to stay home.' Jarod quickly sent him an 'ok' for a response and walked inside.

Going through his locker to retrieve a pen or pencil, Jarod was barely able to pull his hand out of the locker before someone slammed it shut. He fought the urge to sigh and looked at the all-time bully in his life, Jamal Wheeler. He had light brown skin with black hair with dark green eyes that shined brightly with mischief whenever the light touched them.vHe was also the current boyfriend of Jurnee Almond, the girl he had a crush on.

"What?" Jarod asked in a slightly annoyed tone, which caused Jamal to push him into the locker, causing the back of his head to hit the metal harshly as a loud bang was heard throughout the halls.

"Don't "what" me weeb." Jamal said right in his face, his breath smelling like a mix of coffee and cigarettes. Jarod made sure not to cringe at it, since last time he had gotten a black eye. "I came for that nice wallet in your pocket and your phone. Give it." They were now drawing up a crowd, people laughing at him, even Jurnee.

Jarod felt his cheeks heat up in embarrassment, and his anger bubbling up. "No." He said in a calm tone, trying to keep his voice steady. Jamal looked surprised at the answer.

"What was that?" He said, his eyes narrowing at Jarod.

"I said no, now back the hell off!" Jarod yelled pushing Jamal back, causing him to stumble back a few feet. A circle now surrounded the two boys, letting no one through, the teachers oblivious to what was happening. Jamal smirked.

"Oh, you're just asking for it." He growled before charging Jarod. But he was going super slow, in Jarod's eyes that is.

Jarod was confused. Everything was going in slow motion. The people cheering, laughing, it was like they were in a slow-motion film or something. Jamal looked comical as he ran, his eyes were half-lidded and his arms were outstretched, trying to grab Jarod. Jarod found that he could walk around normally, but people were still in slow motion. He decided to have some fun.

He walked up to Jamal and kicked him as hard as he could where the sun doesn't shine. He then kicked his legs into the air and stood back. Then, the time went back to normal.

Jamal flew forward, landing on the ground on his head, clutching his groin, moaning in pain.

". . .did you see that?"

"It was like he teleported. . ."

"Whoa," Jarod said simply, surprised. He walked up to Jamal. "Please don't try anything like that again." He said before walking away from the crowd. He felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned around to see that time seemed to have stopped again. Well, not completely.

In front of him was a girl with long black hair and crimson red eyes. She was a couple of inches shorter than him. Her face seemed emotionless and she had something in her hand.

"We must go." She said before putting a needle in Jarod's neck. Jarod yelled, but since time had stopped, no one could hear him. He tried to push the girl's hand away, but she had an iron grip. He felt his vision growing dark, but not before she said something else. "Let us go, Your Highness."

Jarod slowly opened his eyes and looked around. He was in a dark room that had very little light. He tried to pull on his hands to his face but found them tied by a rope. He looked around.

"Where am I?" He asked the darkness, knowing he wouldn't get a response. But then, a voice spoke up.

"Good, you're awake." A female voice said before the same girl showed up from out of nowhere. He looked at her with shock.

"Why did you kidnap me?!" He yelled, but the girl kept her emotionless facade.

"I didn't 'kidnap' you, Your Highness, I simply took you away without your permission." Jarod sweatdropped.

"That's the legit definition of kidnapping." He replied. "Besides, what's with all of this 'Your Highness' crap? I'm no King."

"Of course not. You're a prince. A very important one at that." Jarod rose an eyebrow.

"What type of drugs did you take this morning?" The girl seemed very unamused, or just very unaffected by his comment. But he couldn't tell which. Her face was blank, her eyes empty of any emotion.

"None. And it is a different day. Currently, it is Saturday, January 27th." Jarod's eyes widened. It was Monday just a couple of hours ago!

"I've been out for six days?" The girl shrugged.

"Yes. You talk in your sleep a lot." She said before another voice spoke out.

"Leave the poor boy alone Katlyn. Can't you tell he's confused as he is, no need to confuse him any more." A gentle, old woman's voice rang out. Jarod looked to his right to see an old woman, with gray hair tied in a ponytail. Her skin was semi-wrinkly and had a deep tan. She was smiling at Jarod before she bowed deeply. "It is a pleasure to meet you for the first time." Jarod rose a brow.

"Um, thanks?" He said, more like a question than a statement. "But, I have a question, why did you kidnap me?" The old woman chuckled.

"I did no such thing." She pointed at the emotionless girl, Katlyn. "She did that. I suggested that we use a needle so not to cause any. . . disturbances."

"It's not like I'm disturbed or anything." He said, rolling his eyes. The woman just smiled at him.

"Well, enough formalities, or maybe you should say that?" She suggested. Not seeing any reaction, she sighed and continued. "Fine. Tell me, Your Highness, what do you know about demons and magic?" Jarod was confused at the question.

"Um, I don't understand. Do you want me to say what I think they are, or what they are?"

"The former." She replied. Jarod took a breath.

"Demons are evil things that torment people on behalf of Satan because he likes tormenting what God had created, which is everything?" He looked at her. She nodded for him to keep going. "And magic, magic is something that can cast spell? Like, I don't know. Harry Potter?" She nodded.

"Not exactly. You see, demons are not Satan's will or his creations. We are his army, or if you prefer, loyal servants. We do not terrorize, we terrorize those who deserve it. And magic is not anything like Harry Potter is. Trust me, you would not want to go to Hell waving a wand, you will be killed almost instantly and then laughed at. Magic is everything. Judging by your wardrobe, I assume you know what Naruto is?"

"How the hell do you know what's in my dresser?!" Jarod yelled, feeling very violated. The woman laughed.

"I'll take that as a yes. Let me continue." She said, ignoring his question. "Magic is similar to what they wield in Naruto. It is in every demon, angel, or even human bodies. Some demons have more magic than others, some don't. In the end, it doesn't really matter. People use their magic to put out spells, some can be helpful, like Healers, some can be destructive, like Berserkers. But there's only one demon who has the most magical power ever, Satan himself."

Jarod looked even more confused. "I'm being held by people who are Satanists. Great..." He muttered. The woman laughed once again.

"We are not Satanists. We are demons." As if to prove her point, her eyes flashed a bright yellow, and her teeth sharpening instantly that looked as if they could break a knife. Jarod flinched away.

"I don't understand. How can the son of Satan be such a wimp?" Katlyn asked. The woman shifted back to normal.

"Don't disrespect him!" She yelled.

"Yes, Master," Katlyn responded obediently. Jarod was shocked. No one had ever defended him like this, especially a stranger. And even then, she spoke with such ferocity, that the teenage girl, or whatever age she was, immediately bowed before him. "I apologize for my words."

"Uh, it's okay?" He said hesitantly. The blood in his veins went ice cold, replaying in his mind what she had said. "D-did you just say I was the son of the devil?" The older woman smirked and nodded her head before bowing.

"Indeed I did, Your Highness." The girl said. Jarod struggled against the binds.

Okay, he could believe in demons, he could believe in magic, but he couldn't believe that he was the son of the most infamous bad guy in the world. The woman laughed.

"You don't believe us, do you? There is a reason why you're currently in binds right now."

"And why is that?" He asked, angry.

"Because, in two day, Monday, January twenty-ninth, your sixteenth birthday, you will start to awaken your powers. And when that happens, you won't be able to control it and you'll kill many humans in the process, causing many demon hunters to come after you, and sooner than later, you will be killed. Therefore, destroying the only legacy of Satan." She responded quickly. Jarod looked at the ground and shook his head.

"This is nuts. You're all crazy." He muttered. The woman smirked before taking off his binds. They were extremely tight, so when he felt the blood flow back into his hand, he felt kinda faint. He quickly fell to the floor, his hands touching the ground.

And the ground was soon covered in ice. "What the?" He said to himself before his answer was soon told.

"Hell is a very, very cold place. It is only natural that Satan and his son gain powers that come from ice. But Satan also has additional powers as well, like his infamous black flames. But he is limited to only two. You, however, may have more than that." Jarod rose an eyebrow.

"Okay, let's say I am Satan's son, isn't also being half a demon limit my abilities, and make me weaker than full-blooded demons?" The woman laughed.

"You are smart. But in this case, it is the exact opposite. Humans, which God created from the dirt and a rib, in His image, are powerful. Just not in the way you would think. They are intelligent, like you. But when a demon and a human crossbreed, which has been outlawed since the 1300s. They were too powerful, and were causing wars everywhere." Jarod nodded his head.

"So, you're saying, that being a half-demon, half-human, make that person more powerful?" The woman nodded.

"It depends on the demon themselves, if they are strong, their hybrid child will be significantly stronger than them. And since Satan is the strongest of all demons, and is the only one with the power to challenge God, what does that make you?"

Jarod stood up. "Wait, does that mean, I'm stronger than Satan?" The woman shook her head.

"Of course not. Well, not right now. You see, with the proper training, you can be just as powerful as Satan, or even more so. You have so much potential that is just waiting to be tapped into that it's baffling." She informed him.

Jarod saw a door and quickly ran and opened it. "Cool. Now, I'll just go back home. My mother is probably worried sick." He lied easily.

"Your mother does not care for you," Katlyn said to him. "She hasn't moved from the couch unless she had to eat or use the restroom." Jarod looked at the floor.

"I know." He said before slamming the door and running into a forest that didn't seem familiar. He looked around and heard a car on a highway. He ran towards the sound and soon found himself on the road that led into town. He smiled.

"Finally." He said before walking to town.

"Would you like me to retrieve him, Master?" The woman shook her head sadly.

"No. We will not try again. He will come to us. He will have to learn the hard way." She said sadly.

"The cost will be great," Katlyn said in her usual tone.

"Indeed."
