Chapter 82 - Eighty One

The soldiers around her all disagreed and begged me to take Elizabeth with us and leave them, but Elizabeth hushed them. She said that she wasn't leaving any of them behind, before holding my hands and putting her trust in me. I wanted to stay with her for a little longer, but the second round of guards were on their way, so George, Nathaniel and I had to leave.

At camp, I brought everyone back to life and filled them in on everything that had happened since the beach, and they asked me what the plan was. I didn't give them a lot of details, but I told them that it was riding on one very important assumption. I then took out three more dolls, tied them up, and brought them to life. I asked the captured guards what they thought about Nathaniel, since he was outside their view.

All three of them told me that they didn't believe that Nathaniel and Donatello were responsible for the monarchs' deaths, but they couldn't break orders. They received orders from the high generals to arrest Nathaniel and kill Donatello on sight, but they were null and void when Paul returned from battle. Nathaniel then went out and faced them, and they treated him like the prince he was.

Apparently, all the guards who were present at the ball were executed for treason and murder by Paul. He was spreading rumours of the entire massacre being Elizabeth's grand plan to become the queen of both kingdoms, but not a lot of people bought it. The nation was split on the rumours and on the brink of a civil war. Paul knew this. He also knew Elizabeth's death would squash any rebellion, because they would have no leader.

I picked a leaf from the tree and told them the plan, and a large part of it depended on the girl. I told her what to do, and she immediately left to go prepare for the execution. We stayed behind and went over everything since precision was as important as ever. One wrong move and we'd all be dead.

We then stealthily went back to the palace, went to our hiding spots and waited. Dawn came and all the soldiers were lined up in an execution fashion, where they were piled a few paces from the podium and on both sides of the general viewing area.

Elizabeth was led to the podium first and Paul came out and announced that she was guilty of assassinating the kings and queens of Ceres and Pasiphae, an act of high treason and to be put to death. She put her head down, but before she was to be killed, the ground shook.
