Chapter 2 - 2. The beast talks

The next morning we made our way through the dense forest. The stillness of the trees making every sound echo.

'So Doran still thinking about escaping?'

His huff was answer enough making me chuckle.

'I could just order you, you know?'

A low growl rumbled from his chest. This kind of communication was really starting to get on my nerves. it was as dull as it was boring, but what could I do? You can't force a werewolf who's lost his human side to just suddenly snap back to normal. I was told that the more time he spends around others the quicker he would at least gain the ability to speak again.

I hope it happens soon, He's useless to me if he can't even speak. It's one thing to be able to take orders but he needs to be able to think rationally if he's going to be of any use. I'll kill him myself if that happens. Just thinking about how long it took me just to find him I get angry.

Sparks began to bounce over my fur, Dorans hackles shot up as he growled my way. When I took this power from Duncan i knew he was weak. Too weak to do what was necessary. He thought he had broken me and in many ways he had but not in the way that he wanted. He thought to use me turns out I ended up using him, well using his power anyway. With his power I became a hybrid part shifter part witch.

Since then I have been in search of more power. Mostly through stealing from others some I bought on the super natural black market. Most started calling me Tiona, meaning fairy queen or a deity. Why they started calling me that I'll never know it's not like I'm some goddess or something. I only seek power so that no one can do to me what that monster did ever again. He took away everything from my dignity to my identity. Sure some things I remember like the girl who was good with names but mostly it's all just blank. All I knew was that as long as I had power no one could hurt me ever again.

I looked to Doran as the sparks around me died down. Power I needed more power and with the help of this beast I was going to get it. all I'll have to do is give him the orders. I chuckled to myself at the thought of it. No one would think twice about coming near me with him around.

The wind around us changed directions suddenly a scent I hadn't smelt in years hit my nose. Doran smelt it to as his head turned his teeth bared. They were running, shit I couldn't let them get away. Shifting I soared into the sky towards them.

'Doran when I cut them off you take them down.'

I laid my alpha tone into the command ensuring he did as I order. Right now I didn't have time to deal with his defiance. It didn't take me long til he was right below me. Diving I cut them off swooping at his eye when out of no where Doran sank his teeth into his neck. While he didn't kill him he did hold him there as he tried to struggled out of Dorans grasp.

Going in to land I shifted into human form pulling out my knife I held it to his throat.

"Doran let go."

Again an order he could not refuse as he padded back growling at the order. I stared into the brown eyes beneath me the stench of red eye pack all over him. Pressing the knife in harder I yelled.

"Shift now or I kill you!"

Since he was branded to the red eye pack I could not talk to him while in wolf form. I needed him to transform if I was to get any information. The ruddy wolf below me growled. Grabbing his foreleg I snapped the bone his yelp scared birds from the nearby trees.

"DO IT!"

The wolf below me started to morph back into human form. I smiled down at him, his brown hair and blue eyes stared up at me rage welling in them.

"That's better. Now why are you following us?"

He growled.

"Why would I tell you?!"

I laughed as I gripped his now broken arm making him yell out in pain.

"Because if you don't I'll break your other arm, then your legs and well you get the picture. So why don't we just skip all that and get to the part where you answer my questions?"

He scowled up at me his eyes shooting daggers not that it would help him.

"Well? Why were you following us?"

Sighing he looked to Doran.

"I was following him."

"Why?"

His eyes returned to me.

"Because I was told to, no one ever told me why."

"Who told you to follow him?"

He growled pressing his lips tight, I grabbed for his other arm.

"Queen Kandra! Queen Kandra she sent me!"

Shit! I had hoped to avoid the attention of the rulers of all werewolves. I looked to Doran, why would the red eye pack be following a wild wolf? I shook my head, I'll deal with that later, for now I'll have to kill this one if I have any chance of staying undetected. Just as I'm about to dig the knife in Dorans voice sounds inside my head.

'DON'T!'

Smiling I slice his throat, Doran jumped to stop me quickly I send a bolt at him forcing him back. Standing up I grab a cloth out and begin wiping my blade down as I approach Doran still suffering from the effects of my power.

"So found our voice have we?"

His emerald orbs glare up at me.

"Didn't I tell you that you were mine? Your loyalties lay with me and no one else. The sooner you realise that the better."

Slowly he began to stand his body still shuddering. His voice was shaky through the mindlink like he was only just learning to speak and in a way he kind of was.

'HE WAS INNOCENT!'

I laughed at his words as I placed my knife back into its sheath.

"After everything you've been through do you really think anyone is innocent?"

He growled at my words ignoring him I started to walk off intending on continuing our journey when his voice sounded again.

'Why?'

Turning back I stared at him.

"Why what?"

'Why this?'

I stared at him. I knew exactly what he was asking. Why him? What could I possibly want with a wild wolf. Seems he was gaining back his senses exceeding my expectations. However he still had a way to go. I smiled down at him as I answered.

"You'll find out soon enough Doran."

Shifting I started to continue on but Doran stopped me.

'WAIT!'

I growled.

'What now!'

He looked down at the red eye pack member.

'Send... him... off.'

I glared at him. Will he always be this annoying.

'Why should I?'

He growled the words seeming to escape him.

'Send...him...of-'

'NO!'

Padding closer to him I stared into his eyes. While they did seem to have a bit more clarity in them then the mindless beast he was only yesterday he was still my tool to do with as I pleased and I would not be ordered by a tool.

'I think I preferred you when you couldn't talk. Now shut up and come on.'

He didn't move making me growl.

'Do I have to order you?!'

He took one last look towards the body then started forwards. I followed after him as we continued on our way. It seemed I made the right choice in choosing this one. He seemed smarter then the average wild wolf. I would need little effort to get him to the level I wanted.

That night went without incident he didn't try attack nor did he try to escape. Seemed I was at least making progress with that side of things. The less effort I had to put into my orders the better. There was still a great deal to do to get him ready to do my bidding.

I had expected To encounter more red eye pack members but seems the queen relied on just the one. It made me wonder why there was one at all. What was so special about this wolf?

Over the next couple days Dorans eyes seemed to becoming less and less cloudy as we traveled and I wondered just how much he was holding back. No wolf I had heard of could come back from being all wolf so fast yet he seemed to be doing it at an alarming rate.

I watched him closely as he padded in front of me. His trek through the trees silent being used to travelling within their depths. Sensing that he could actually hold a conversation I decided to break the silence between us.

'So Doran how long have you been in West Virginia?'

He didn't answer the only sign that he had heard me with the light turn of his ear.

'We're stuck together might as well answer since I know you can.'

He growled.

'If you release me we won't be stuck together.'

I chuckled.

'So you have fully regained your speech?'

'Of course I have, but you already knew that.'

I looked around as a deer bounded away from us it's path through the trees panicked.

'True.'

He huffed a habit he did that a lot when he was anoyed, just one of the many things I'd observed in our few days together.

'So will you answer?'

'Why do you even care?'

I padded forward so that we were side by side and I could see his eyes.

'I'm just curious.'

He stared side ways at me his eyes studying mine.

'Come on Doran it won't kill you to answer.'

He seemed to sigh as his eyes returned to what was in front of him.

'I don't know. once you go full wolf you loose all sense of time and day.'

Well that was a boring answer.

'So what made you go wolf in the first place were you exiled? Did I get it right with the name Doran?'

He growled.

'Does it matter? Will the answer change anything?'

I studied him, his demeanour and tone were angry. What had happened to this wolf to cause him to give up his human life?

'Guess not.'

He remained silent after that it wasn't til we stopped for the night that he spoke again.

'So Tiona is it? What is it that you hope to achieve from all this?'

I sat in human form laying on the forest floor staring up at the skies. Without looking his way I smiled.

"You'll know so enough."

He huffed.

'I'm going to find out eventually any way.'

I laughed as I turned on my side so that I was facing him. I looked closely at his fur for the first time. The browns and greys had now taken on a ruddy colour in the moon light.

"What makes you think your going to find out anything?"

He scoffs through the mind link.

'There's a reason you picked me is there not?'

I raised my eyebrows at him.

"Getting smarter by the second Aren't we Doran?"

'We both know that's not my name.'

I shrugged as I resumed my position returning my focus to the stars.

"It's your name now I don't care who you were. All I care about is who you will be for me."

'And who would that be?'

I chuckled.

"My gaurd."

His sneaker had me looking towards him again.

'From what I've seen you don't need a gaurd.'

I glared at him.

"You don't even know me."

'No I don't and I don't care to. What makes you think I would guard someone that has forced me into their service?'

"Because I'll give you no choice but to."

Slowly he got up as he stepped closer.

'True loyalty must be earned.'

He was mere inches away from me his eyes two shining emeralds seemed to stare straight through me. I felt vulnerable beneath his gaze and I hated it. Quickly I touched his brand, his yelp a sharp sound in the night as pain shot through his body. Jumping up I knocked him to the ground resting my foot on his side. Leaning in I growled at him.

"Look at me like that again and I'll do worse. I need you for your power but I don't need you. There are many wild wolves out there any of them will do. So If you want to live I suggest you start doing as I tell you and keep your opinions to yourself!"

I touched his brand again realising him from the pain once more. His body relaxed as he got to his paws outing distance between us. His eyes watched me still that ever defiant glare in them.

"You will be loyal or you will die either option is fine with me."

He huffed then got up and padded away.

'Don't go too far now!'

I chuckled knowing the remark would piss him off, sure enough I heard a growl from the empty space. This one was different to the others. I had tried to tame a wild wolf many times over the last year, all failures. you would be surprised how many wolves out there are actually werewolves who have given up their human lives and became full wolves. All had discarded killed for their inability to be useful. Most never even regained the ability to talk. This one however either he hadn't been full wolf long or he was smarter then the others. Either way as long as he did his job and watched my back he will keep his life.

Though it was troubling that a red eye pack wolf was following him. The last thing I needed was the king and queen after me, not even I had enough power to beat them, well not yet at least. Maybe it was the same thing that brought me to hunt this wolf. I had heard reports that the local pack had taken to starting fights with him as a way of proving themselves to the pack. Barbaric if you ask me torturing a wild beast.

I growled just thinking about it. It's one thing to torture for information like I'd done with the wolf just a few days ago but to do it for fun. Sparks began to dance across my skin. I had known that pain that feeling of helplessness. Never again I vowed I'll die before anyone gets that close to me. With any luck this wolf will ensure that will never happen. I'm sure he'll be more then happy to kill me if I'm taken. Not that I plan to be taken quite the opposite but still it would take a lot of power before I can guarantee that never happens and Doran would bring me one step closer, I just knew it.
