It was like a gust of wind filled the room.
A soft whisper could be heard from everywhere and nowhere. It was clear, but impossible to understand. As if it was talking in a language that I had never heard before.
I glanced at the dwarf to see if he heard it to. Bit he just kept adjusting the crystal and making notes. He only lifted his head for a few seconds and then proceeded his work.
I tried to focus on the whispers. But they seemed so distant. Were they trying to tell me something? Where were they coming from? Were they from the shadows?
I once heard a rime in my village about how one should not listen to the whispers from the shadows. Because they always tell lies.
But now, I was curious. Afterall, lies often have a core of truth.
Then the sound disappeared as if it was never even there.
"Maybe I am just imagining things? Afterall it has been a few months since I have slept."
I shrugged it off and kept on observing the dwarf as he did his work.
The following hours were boring to say the least. The most exiting thing that happened was when the dwarf asked me to hold the modified crystal and a normal one to compare the light that they immitted.
The modified crystal was just a few of the regular ones glued together in a certain order with something like an energy core in the centre.
It worked a little. The crystal shone a lot brighter. However, the light was flickering and unstable.
Therefore, the moss could not make the humming sound.
The dwarf took the crystal back and examined it. He sighed as he could not figure out what the problem was. And thus, he helplessly placed it to the side.
I wanted to help. But I had no idea whatsoever how these things worked. For me it was just a bunch of translucent stones that glowed in a bright red colour whenever I got close.
"Don't worry. You will get it eventually."
"But the problem is when I will get it. I don't know how long I have."
I glanced at the dwarf who was now looking through all his notes.
"I think that you will still have some time. It is hard to find this place without guidance."
"Yea, but who says that other demons can't do what you did. Eventually they will find it."
The dwarf hurriedly repositioned some of the crystals in an attempt to stabilise the light. It left me to wonder why this carefree dwarf suddenly was so obsessed in improving the security.
("Maybe he did hear the whispers after all?")
"For as far as I have seen. There are not many demons that use illusions. So how high is the chance that they will get in even if they find it?"
The dwarf shook his head. "yes, there are not many demons that do such a thing. But the problem is. There has to be only one to let them all in."
"Then won't I be able to find that demon before it lets the others in?"
"you must know by now that almost everyone can learn magic. For some it will be easier and for others it will be harder. Most people have a certain talent for one or two specific types of magic, they will be able to learn those rather quickly and it will feel natural to them. for demons, those types of magic are often fire, ice, or darkness. It will probably take a few years for them to learn a specific type of magic that they have no particular talent for. And it might even take them hundreds of years if it conflicts with the other types of magic that they have already mastered. Therefore, if you find another demon that uses illusions, it will most likely be a lot older and stronger than you. I am not saying that you can't win, but you will most certainly need help. And the help that you can get here will probably kill you right after they killed the other demon."
"Then can't you tell them so that they do not need me?"
"No. They will ask where the information came from."
"I see."
This was indeed a problem; tough I did not believe that it was as urgent as the dwarf thought.
I leaned back and tried to throw and catch the regular detection crystal with my tail. At first it was quite hard, and I nearly dropped it. But it became easier after a few times.
"You are bored?"
I only nodded in response to the question of the dwarf.
"I am sure that the others will come soon." The dwarf responded. He had seemingly calmed down a little.
About half an hour lather I finally noticed the group approaching.
I narrowed my eyes as I noticed who was with them. it was the elf, Nathan.
