I was overjoyed to go back to school. I met up with my friends who were waiting for me so we could all walk in together.
As I walked down the hall, I saw everything with fresh eyes, taking everything in. What I was really looking at were the kids interacting with one another. I was always in my own world that I didn't notice certain kids showing their dominance, while others flaunted their wealth. Still, others didn't care either way, and some tried to hide and be invisible. It got me thinking where I stood. What kind of boy was I?
My memories regarding my friends and family was still intact. School, lessons, my grandparents, childhood memories, it seemed I could remember everything but Katerina, the mystery girl.
I decided to call her my elusive cat, considering I can't seem to hold a conversation with her as she is always taking off, creating more interest on my part.
I did not see her the entire time going to class, which really stirred the question if she would even show up, and if she did, would she still be hard to talk to, and how was I going to get close enough to her without her taking off again.
"Alright, class, settle down," Mr. Mraz asked. "I have a group project I would like for you to work on. I'll have groups of four, each one having a chance to explain your group topic, which you can choose but it will have a theme. "
I looked around in anticipation, mystery girl still hadn't shown up.
Suddenly the door opened and in she came, she handed Mr. Mraz a note, and sat down after getting a nod of approval.
My eyes followed her until she sat down, not once looking my way.
Mr Mraz continued with his explanation of the project, detailing the objectives, points system, and when it is expected to be completed.
I wrote everything down, laying out my plan. Now to find my classmate so we can discuss how we want to start the project. Mr Mraz left some time in the class so that everyone could work on their projects together.
I was disappointed to find that Katerina was not in my group project. I really wanted the chance to work with her and at least start interacting. I found my class mates, Jones Paul, Celia Demeter, and Marty Gibbon. We sat around the table and discussed the project until we made a plan and everyone had a part to play.
Since we were done early, we could either stay and do some work or leave, which I chose to stay, but got up to sharpen my pencil that broke mid writing. As I was passing a nearby table, I heard a girl, Kayline Watkins, talking with another girl, Sobri Ferro.
"I can't believe we got stuck with little miss death!"exclaimed Kayline.
"She won't get any points if I have anything to do with it!" Sobri retorted.
"Shush shush!" She whispers as I walk nearer.
Feigning innocence, I keep walking until I reach the sharpener.
"Hello, Collin!" Kayline calles out sweetly to me.
"Hello, Kayline." I respond.
"Shame we're not in the same group project," she exclaims sadly.
"I'm sure there will be plenty of others," I smile politely as I return to my seat.
"Okay, we'll see you at lunch!" She waves.
"Okay," I reply quietly. I have my notebook out and I begin to scribble, looking like I'm actually working on school work, which I normally would be but it was all completed. I made it my mission to get all my work that was due completed and out of the way so I can start to focus on Kat.
Making its way to the top of the list was names of people who didn't like her. It seems that finding out what happened was going to be a lot harder than I had anticipated. Especially when no one was willing to open up and talk about it.
