Kat's POV
I sat there on my knees for a moment, unsure of what happened. I was always scraping my poor knees but today I barely felt the pain. I was feeling a completely different kind of pain today, one of the heart. I saw Collin there looking dazed and confused. I needed to get home and check in on my sister, I did not have time to deal with any kind of bullies right now, or any day for that matter but especially today. I looked at Collin with determination and anger. I yelled at him before he could do or say anything to me, and quickly ran off.
I found my father outside the school by the car, waiting for me so we could go to the hospital. I jumped in the car and was eager to get there. My sister had one of her minor seizures. At first they were random and short, they didn't harm her and she always made it through them. But know she was getting them more frequent and with more force. If she wasn't careful or had someone with her she could easily get hurt from herself or her surroundings. I was so worried about my sister thinking that the worst had come but I saw her smiling and looking healthy on the hospital bed. Relief swept over me as I sat beside her on the bed.
"How are you doing, Sister?" I asked with concern still in my voice.
"Kat, please don't worry, the doctor said that nothing was damaged and I should be able to go home soon!" She said with a smile that warmed my heart. She looked at me and my parents and said, "we were lucky that nothing serious happened. The doctor also mentioned a new medication that will help keep the episodes under control better. "
Tears rolled down my face. I know we are both children and should act like it but circumstances and health issues have forced us to grow up a lot faster than most children.
I wished with all my heart that my little sister did not have to go through this torment. I want to protect her but her battles always leave me defeated and useless. I smiled at her, grasping her hands near my heart and kissing them, "I love you and will be here with you!"
"Kat, please, I am fine. I'll let you stay until they send me home, which should be this afternoon,ok?" My sister looked at me lovingly and I knew what she was thinking. She did not want to feel like a burden nor did she wan to hold me back. She compromised by finding a solution that could meet both our needs. I could stay and satisfy my need to show my support and love while giving her time to herself to recuperate and regain her strength on her own time without the constant hover.
I agreed heartedly and continued to chat with her, making her laugh and telling her stories that she loved. Our parents stayed as well, bringing her food and blankets to keep her warm. They talked with Dr. Stanley, the lead doctor on her case to get more information on the medication and what to expect in the future regarding my sister's condition.
It was early afternoon when my sister was released to go home.
As promised, I went out for the afternoon once she was settled in her bed. I made sure she had everything she needed like her water bottle , her music and some books. She loves to read her Space Girl Ranger novel series so I made sure she had the latest release. I wanted to continue to stay with her but I knew she would not want that.
I decide to visit Sammy her mom to let them know what happened since they were very good friends and worried about my sister's health.
I found Sammy's mom, Shirley, at the shop busy making flower arrangements. Shirley became like a second mother to me that I soon found myself calling her Mother Shirley.
"Hi, Mother Shirley!" I greeted her after walking into the shop.
Mother Shirley looked up from her work and smiled, "Hello, Kat, what brings you here so early?" She questioned with concern written on her face. I updated her on what had happened to Kendall, leading up to the present.
"Oh, Kat!" She exclaimed with relief. "Thank goodness she is better, I will stop by later to pay your family a visit!"
"Thank you, Mother Shirley, in the meantime, I'll help water the plants and do some chores while I wait for Sammy!" I exclaimed with eagerness.
"Ok, darling, but don't work too hard!" She sighed as she knew full well as to what an over achiever I could be sometimes.
I knew when to expect Sammy from school so I timed my rotation to fit so that I could spot her coming outside the front of the building when she walked to the shop after her classes had ended for the day.
What I didn't expect was to be run over by the same bully as earlier that day , in almost the exact same method.
I had just about had it from Collin, especially since he acted like he didn't know who I was both times, which only made it worse for me since I saw him everyday of the school week. I was determined to not let him get to me no matter what. I quickly ran off before he could pursue me again. I saw Sammy coming and quickly signaled for her to use the back of the entrance to get into the building. She knew about my bullies but she had never seen them in person. She was awestruck in seeing Collin. She though at first that he was a boy I was interested but I quickly set her straight. That was not the case here. She understood the situation and agreed to help me out.we were whispering in the back when we suddenly heard him calling for someone. My eyes grew wide and whispered to Sammy to get rid of him.
Sammy did her best and sent Collin away. She was telling the truth, I did not work there, and we were pretty much family. That was too close, crisis averted for now.
