Chapter 7 - Paradox conundrum

Why... why did he have to burn down my apartment. I don't owe Eric anything. People in this world just force each other into line because they have a better ability then the other, its sick and twisted. Just because you're more powerful than another person doesn't mean it's right for you to control them. Everyone one should be equal, but that's never the case. Davey had the right idea when he offered me power to get equality. If we use this power we can create a classless society, a society where this kind of stuff doesn't happen. I kicked a can down the alley, flailing my arms in frustration.

"wow, your a pissy one aren't you"

"What the... who are you,"

"My name is Samanth , but most people call me Beth, it's a long story... and you are,"

"I'm Melody, but you can call me Mel if you'd like,"

"well Mel, what in the world could have you so worked up,"

"My girlfriend's ability allows here to see into the future, she saw me doing something horrible and I'm afraid that its inevitable,"

"Mel you can't be afraid of what might happen, you just have to make it right if does...

"Beth, she saw me burning down our home while standing over our friends body,"

"oh...

"What if I'm destined to destroy our family and home like her vision says,"

"Then you just need to try to do the right thing mel,"

"Thanks Beth, I'm trying to kill some time, would you like to go grab a bite to eat,"

"That sounds like fun mel, thank you,"

We walked to a pizzeria down the street, I had a slice of Hawaiian, which she judged me on harshly.

"Mel there is something seriously wrong with you,"

"Oh stop, Hawaiian style pizza is a perfectly normal style of pizza,"

"Your weird mel,"

"Beth, you live in a trash can and your making me green from your smell,"

"At least I don't make horrible life decisions like Hawaiian pizza, mel,"

"Grouch,"

"Fated to the flame,"

We walked back to her trashcan, our bellies filled with pizza. She had some spring to her step, I lagged behind the acid from the pineapple messing with my stomach. We got back to her street, her dumpster perfectly untouched.

"Hey Beth, do you want to go somewhere better,"

"What do you mean Mel,"

"If you want I can offer you somewhere else to stay, somewhere that you'll be safe,"

"Thank you Mel, I would love that,"

"Its a long way though, you up for it Beth,"

"It beats staying here,"

We headed back to the colony. I know that I should be staying far from there, but with my abandoned apartment building destroyed it was either this or staying in the trashcan with her. I wish I could stop this fate, but everything happens for a reason I guess. We passed my destroyed apartment on the way. I kept my head down, trying not to look at the charred ruins. That luxurious apartment, reduced to rubble.

"Hey Beth, I need to make a pit stop first is that ok,"

"Take your time dear, I'm just along for the ride,"

"How old are you Beth,"

"Sixty five,"

"I would have guessed fifty four,"

"Mel now your just being nice,"

I giggled as we entered the super market. I grabbed Syrup and milk.

"Some one seems to be craving chocolate milk, you ok mel,"

"Its a apologetic gift, Davey likes his chocolate milk,"

"who's, Davey, melody"

"My father,"

She smiled and nodded, as we checked out and kept moving towards the colony. We dodged in and out of the law men, who were still searching for me from the unplanned murder I had committed days prior. We walked up to the colony, my mind freaking out. They probably hate me, they may tell me to leave, but hopefully they will take care of Beth.

"Wait mel, your father runs this colony,"

"Yeah I was shocked to find that out too,"

"So family issues,"

"Well... Its complicated,"

We walked into the colony, getting just the greeting I expected. People watched me intensely, some point or covering their mouths to hide that they were talking about me.

"Ever the popular one are you,"

"you could say that," I said, leading her into the war room.

"So melody, did you get it out of your system," Dave said, spinning in his chair.

I motioned for beth to wait outside, placing the chocolate milk onto the table after she left.

"I accept your peace offering, but you should have warned me that you were going to disappear,"

"Well after I threw you into a concrete pillar, and exploded about how you weren't there, I didn't think you wanted me here,"

"Melody, there is always a place for you in the colony, and your friend is welcome to, but please don't force me away,"

"Davey did... Did Christa tell you,"

"She did, and if it happens, so be it."

Tears kissed the corners of my eyes, I awkwardly approached him my arms extended. He enveloped me into his chest, hugging me like... well like a father hugs his child. I know that he was around earlier, but he is definitely making up for it. He passed a blanket to me for Beth, knowing I would sleep with Christa.

I walked outside rubbing tears from my eyes, I placed the blankets into Beth's hands.

"Thank you child, your very kind to have done this for me,"

"Well the fun is yet to end, I would like you to meet Christa,"

I walked down into the colony, Christa immediately tackling me to the ground in a hug.

"Melody, oh god, I heard what happened are you ok,"

"Gemmm ofmmm mmmm chesmmm,"

"What was that,"

"Christa your siting on my diaphragm," I choked.

"Sorry, Mel,"

"Christa this is Samantha,"

They introduced themselves as I dusted myself off. Christa brought us to the mess hall, both of us were hungry after the long hike. Beth seemed to be rather interested in the man behind the lunch line. We informed her that he's name was Clay, and she left to talk to him. They hit it off quickly and left with each other, leaving Christa and I to talk.

"what are you going to do if it comes true,"

"Its as beth said, Just try to do what's right when it happens,"

We finished in silence, before we grasped each other's hands. We headed to bed, enjoying the warmth of each other's embrace. Kissing her good night I drifted to sleep, my dreams plagued by blue flames.
