Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Vanitas Tohajima

I was surprised by what short work they had done with the girl and demon. Yuuto said they were the strongest amongst us, but it seemed he was wrong. The boy with the knife; he seemed to know how to fight these creatures, almost as if he had encountered them before.

"That wouldn't be possible and you know that Vanitas." A familiar voice said behind me. I didn't bother to look to see who it was.

I knew Yuuto followed me here. He always did, in case I ever tried to run away. "If he had encountered them before, he would've been dead." His voice sounded old and raspy even though he was in his thirties.

"Then how was he able to kill them? And how did they know what they were capable of?" I asked him.

"That is not important. What is important is that you finish your mission. Understand?" He gritted his teeth. I sighed and turned to see the four boys running in different directions.

"Yes, sir." I murmured. I saw one boy running a bit slower than the others. He was the same boy who was capable of killing the girl and demon. Kill him first, then the others. I thought.

I ran behind him, and hid behind a tree nearby every time he stopped and looked back. When he reached a house I ran behind it and stopped halfway. In the backyard there were graves. I was surprised when I recognized the names on the graves. This was the Solstace backyard, meaning he was inside the same house he just left. I looked behind to see the boy go inside. I ran to the closest window and looked at what was happening there.

I was surprised when I saw the rest of the boys there. In fact, they all seemed surprised to see each other there. I listened carefully to what they were saying. "What are you doing here?! I thought you said guys went home!" The boy with a bandana said.

"Same to all of you!" The kid with glasses replied, just as puzzled as everyone else.

"Oh no." The dark-blue haired boy said.

"What? What's the problem, Oni?" The boy with the knife asked. "Remember what that demon girl said? 'No one leaves Solstace house?'" The kid known as Oni said.

"Yeah, so what about it? It's not like she meant it." The bandana boy said.

"Guys, I think Oni's onto something. I think it means that we either finish the game or-" he didn't finish.

Just then, a loud screech came from the house. I covered my ears, and for a minute I thought I would go deaf. Just when I couldn't take it anymore, there was silence. I removed my hands from my ears and looked around. What in the world created such a loud, ear-splitting noise? And in the middle of the night. I looked back to see what was happening. The boys seemed confused as well. After a while, I thought about how to get in.

I knew that if you went through the front of the house, you'd have to finish the "game" as people called it, quit, or die. I looked up and my mind did the rest of the thinking. If I remember correctly, there was a chimney on this house . . . I climbed my way up to the chimney, and frowned.

There was a chimney on this house, but the problem was that it was too small for me. I sighed, and was just about to give up when something caught my eye. A window, small but in it was a crack large enough for me to fit in.

I made my way in, slowly and quietly. I couldn't hear any voices below me once I got in, probably because I was two floors above them. I searched through the attic to see where the lever was to open the ladder. For some reason, I could feel the presence of someone watching me. Every once in a while, I would look back to see only dust and moonlight and old pictures. Then I heard it; a soft, quiet breath.

I spun around and came face-to-face with none other than Yuuto. "You seem to be having trouble getting your way downstairs Vanitas." he whispered.

"You obviously seem to know your way around here." I said, gritting my teeth. He shrugged. From the corner of my eye, I could see a smile spreading across his face.

"What can I say? My family owned this place. I lived here long enough to see this place grow old and die with the people with it." I rolled my eyes.

"I don't care if you lived in this house or in the devil's house, why are you here?" I asked angrily. I was starting to get pissed off. I wanted to murder this guy instead of murdering those kids downstairs. His smile grew even wider.

"I don't think I need to answer that, now do I?" His voice suddenly sounded so soothing. "Kill the boys below, and no more mistakes this time. Understood?" My eyelids started to get heavy, my body was like lead.

"Uh-huh…" I mumbled.

Wake up! A strange voice yelled in my head. It didn't sound like my voice, but a strong and confident one. My mind snapped back to reality. I looked up again to see nothing but dust and old boxes. I sighed and went back to searching for the lever. To my surprise, it stood in front of me, the handle pointing opposite of my direction. I pulled it and a door opened underneath me. I fell face first on the second floor. "Oww…." I groaned.

"What was that?" A voice said. I recognized that voice. It was the boy with glasses, and if I was correct, they were right underneath me.

"I don't know. You wanna go check it out Jay?" I recognized that voice as Oni.

"Why do I have to check it out?! Why can't you guys do it?" The boy known as "Jay" said.

I got up and looked outside the window nearby. I was confused when I saw a boy about nine years walking in this direction. He had brown hair that shone in the moonlight. I knew he was trying to say something, but I couldn't tell what. I opened the window. A cold breeze brushed to my face as I listened to what he was saying.

"Oni! Oni, where are you?! God if this is a joke, I'm not laughing!" He called out. I could hear a faint bit of fear in his voice. He looked up in my direction. I hid beside the window, my breath still. "Oni? Is that you?" He said. I took a deep breath and looked outside again.

His eyes widened when he saw me. "Oh! I'm sorry! Do you know where my brother Oni is?" He asked me. I opened my mouth and stopped. Oni... he was one of the people in the house.

Let him in. Then you could kill him as well. I thought about it again and again until I couldn't resist. "Yes. He's inside here." I said. I could see a look of relief spread across his face as he came to the door.

"This door is closed, so you have to go through the backyard." I told him. He stared at me, nodded and ran to the back of the house. I ran to the stairs and jumped down. I landed on my feet and looked up in case the boys were there or the kid that I talked to earlier. To my surprise, there was neither here.

I heard a noise in the room next door. I opened a small portion of the door and peeked through the crack. My eyes widened as I saw the boys in the house and the boy who I came across earlier were in there. The boys were trying to kill the boy with brown hair while he was doing the same thing. I stared at the fight for so long I didn't realize that the real boy I let in watched as Oni took a gun and shot the imposter again and again until he was out of bullets.

He dropped the gun and fell to his knees. "Is he dead?" The bandana boy asked. He nodded slowly. The others except for the boy in the back walked to the body. The kid with glasses put his hand on Oni's shoulder.

"I killed him…..I actually killed him….." He said, terrified. The kid with the knife bent down and took something from the body. It was an envelope. They all stared at him as he read the note aloud.

"'Congratulations, you have won.'" He said. He looked inside the envelope to see what else was in there. He dropped the note and took out a pile of money. I was surprised the envelope hadn't burst with it inside.

"A million dollars, just like the website said." The bandana boy said. The knife kid looked up to see the boy they killed earlier.

"Oh, you're here." He said. They all turned around to see him.

Oni got up and slowly walked to the boy. "Karma, is that you?" He said to the boy preferably known as Karma. He backed up two steps, and then broke into a run.

"Wait! Kamra, come back!" He yelled and ran after him. The others followed. After the last boy ran, I fully opened the door and walked into the room.

I walked to the center of the room and picked up the note on the ground. I flipped the note and smiled as I saw a code, 8579370246. I pulled out my scanner and scanned the code and sent it to Yuuto.

Once that was done, I took out a lighter and set the note on fire. I dropped the note on the ground and walked out of the house as the place started to burn to the ground.
