Chapter 27 - Chapter 24- The Locals and Their Annoying Personalities

1938 Words

Point of View (Alexa)

After school, Leah and I waited outside for everyone to get out. I was just standing awkwardly for a moment, thinking about how the one thing that actually made me closer to my new family was me passing out and being carried up to my room by my new dad. "Hey," Diya said, walking up to the two of us, "I come bearing questions. Alexa, are you ok?"

"Why do you care?" I asked, putting my hands on my hips.

"I don't know, I just thought Leah would like to know what her best friend was doing after she left," Diya replied, threateningly.

"What were you doing?" Leah asked, curious, "Am I supposed to guess?"

I shook my head, "No, Diya just has to leave now. She's being weird. Anyway, you should probably go to sleep. If you don't get enough sleep tonight plus extra, I'm gonna... stop hanging out with you!"

She laughed, responding, "Oh no," sarcastically, "I can't believe you'd do that!"

Then a voice came on the intercoms, "Leah and Azariah, report to headquarters."

Leah's face fell, turning away, "Sorry, I have to go." I watched as she started to run towards headquarters. I frowned, feeling the world go grey. What could've possibly made Leah so sad? I was still watching Leah in the distance when the double doors opened, Hosea and Azariah running out. The world felt so grey... way too grey.

Point of View Change (Leah)

I ran to headquarters as fast I could, knowing something had to be wrong with Jenna. It was never just Azariah and me. Not since Jenna came. It was always the four of us or even the three of us. I hated to assume the worst, but I had to. Something had to be wrong. I opened the door to headquarters and I saw Mordecai with Jenna in his arms, unconscious. "What's wrong? Why isn't she awake?" I asked, trying to open her eyes, "Jenna?"

Mordecai shook his head, "We don't know what happened. She just... fell."

"Is she... dead?" I asked softly.

Mordecai shook his head again, "I don't think so... I hope not." I put my hand in front of her mouth, nothing. I tried to check for a pulse, but there was nothing.

"She's not breathing. I know that doesn't mean much, but... I don't know what's happening. She can't be dead. She's still in heaven," I responded, shaking my head.

Then the door opened again, "Is she ok?" I turned around to see Azariah walking up to us, "Wait, why is she unconscious? I thought we couldn't die in heaven."

"You never know what's possible. But, she's not dead. She can't be," Hosea said, "She doesn't die no matter what happens."

"You three need to take her back home. She just needs rest," The Big Man responded, putting his palm over Jenna's forehead for a second, "She's just a little tired."

Point of View Change(Jenna)

I woke up, only slightly remembering what happened yesterday. I was at school and I... I passed out, I think. I couldn't walk and then I couldn't breathe. I even remember Mordecai carrying me to headquarters. Then I woke up in my bed. "Where is everyone?" I asked myself, looking over to the bed across from me. "Mordecai? Azariah? Leah? Hosea? Alexa? Kelly? Anyone?"

Then I could hear Azariah in the hallway saying, "He said the same thing as last time. I'm kind of starting to get mad about this. I kind of wanna just get past it... it just kind of feels... I don't know." Then the door opened, but I was too speechless to try to pretend that I was asleep. "Jenna?"

"Wait, how long was I a-" I started, but then Mordecai hugged me, falling onto me, "H-help."

Azariah laughed, tears falling down her face a little, "Get off. We don't want her to die again, Mordecai."

"Ya, please listen to her, I need to breathe."

"But I miss you," Mordecai mumbled, rolling off of me.

I laughed, "I wasn't asleep that long." Both of them got sad looks on their face, "How long was it? Wait, Leah's not dead is she?" Their facial expressions didn't change, "She's dead?!"

Azariah shook her head, "No, she just doesn't really... hang out anymore. She got new friends."

"Then why aren't you friends with them? Alexa and Kelly are really nice," I replied.

"No, Jenna, Leah's dating Ethan now," Mordecai replied, frowning, "She started hanging out with his sisters."

"...Oh... so I have to beat him up," I replied, nodding.

Azariah started waving her arms around, "No, you will not be doing that. Leah would never forgive you."

The door opened again and Leah walked through, "Wh- Jenna?!" She hugged me really tight and suddenly I just wanted to throw up. Why would I want to hug someone who's ignoring two of my friends?

"Where's Ethan?" I asked, pulling away from the hug.

She frowned, looking a little panicked, "Why do you ask?"

"Because I'm gonna beat him up, that's why. If he's the one who's making my friends split up, I'll do whatever it takes," I replied, punching my hand.

Azariah stopped me, "Jenna, it's not what you think. She's still our friend. We actually hang out with her a lot."

I squinted at Azariah, "Seriously. If this isn't a nightmare, I'm gonna beat up more than just Ethan."

She shook her head, "For real. They're really cute together."

"Ummmm.... Azariah, Leah is gay. I'm not even joking. For real, she likes girls and girls only. I don't understand how you could stand here saying something else. I was in her head for a day, I think I'd know how gay she is! There's no freaking way she's dating Ethan! I know him, he's a boy!"

"No, Azariah's right, we're really close. And, before this whole thing, I was gonna tell you guys that we kissed," Leah replied, acting all cute.

I squinted my eyes at her, "Excuse me, stranger, but I have to go beat up Ethan." I tried to stand up, but then... it hurt. "Azariah," I whispered, motioning her over to me. She came over and I whispered, "I can't... walk."

"What? Why?" she asked, whispering.

I shrugged my shoulders, "I don't know. I'm pretty sure my legs are broken."

"What should I do?" Mordecai asked, whispering.

"Carry me to headquarters or something," I replied, holding out my arms.

Time Skip

I watched as The Big Man plopped down a set of crutches in front of me. I frowned, "What's up with this, doc? I can't use a weelchair!"

He squinted his eyes, "Because you're shorter? I thought I made it short enough..."

I rolled my eyes, "You HAVE to know that's not what I meant. I'm not gonna roll around in this all the time. Can't you just heal me?"

He shook his head, "We were kind of really lucky that it wasn't anything really bad. But, if we heal you, The Nothingness will come back and she probably won't be as gracious."

"What about the stairs to heaven?" I asked, getting annoyed that he wouldn't do anything.

"Don't worry about that, we'll worry about that when the time comes. You'll be perfectly fine, Jenna. I mean, you aren't the one who had to make that," he replied, laughing.

I rolled my eyes and sat down, "At least it's comfortable."

"Well, it had to be. You're not gonna be able to walk ever again."

"Oh wow, ok. I guess I have an excuse to make him carry me now. Never gonna walk, huh? Well, at least I got a big nap right before I realized that I wouldn't ever be able to chase or beat up anyone ever again."

"I never thought about it like that. I wonder why she picked you, though."

I frowned, "Oh... I think I know why." Ya, it was probably because she was jealous. I mean, nothing really happened... just that I think I'm dating Mordecai now. Like I said, no big deal.

"Why?" The Big Man asked.

I was determined to say it, I really was, so I said, "Nothing. It's not important." And that's why Mordecai hadn't liked you till now... great.

"Really?"

"No," I thankfully got out, "It is important. I mean, it's important, but I'm... not telling. Ya, that's it." I nodded, smiling, I did a good thing. Mordecai wheeled me out, obviously smiling really wide. I laughed, "What is it, Mordecai?"

"I'm just so happy that you're back! I mean, we were also having a conversation before you passed out and I've been dying to know what you were gonna say," Mordecai replied, excitedly.

I frowned, "What was I gonna say?"

"Oh, you were gonna say what your favorite color is," he replied, obviously lying. Wait... so, I'm not dating him and I'm pretty sure I just... messed it up.

I laughed, "You know what my favorite color is... it's dark blue."

"But that's my favorite color," he replied, laughing.

I nodded, "Ya, I know."

"I can't wait till you get better. Well, I mean, get used to everything that's happening," Mordecai replied.

I shook my head, "No way. If everything else changed as drastically as this did, there's no way that I'm accepting anything. I'm not gonna be like homophobic or anything, I just can't stand this whole Leah and Ethan thing."

"Ya, I think she's just trying to figure things out."

"But I thought she already did. Ok, can I push myself now? I really need to release some steam and I think trying and failing to steer this thing'll help." He stopped pushing and I tried my best to push the wheel. I grinned, "I think I got it."

"Cool! Oh, try to turn!" I thought for a moment and then I took a sharp turn onto the next path. Mordecai laughed, "You're so fast now!"

"Now I can chase you faster!" I replied, laughing. I took a U-turn, but then I felt like I was tipping. I hit the ground, laying on my side.

Mordecai gasped, "Are you ok?"

I kind of nodded, "Ya, but could you help me up? I kind of... can't stand up."

"Oh, sorry," he replied as he set the chair back up, "Anyways, you wanna race?"

"Really? That is so irresponsible, Mordecai," I replied, but then I grinned, "Let's do it."

"Ok, one, two, three... GO!" Then I started going as fast as I could, but I only went a couple feet before my arms got really tired. After a moment, Mordecai stopped and looked behind him, "Oh ya, just a second."

Then he started walking towards me and I said, "Don't go too fast, ok?"

"Ok... I'll go WAY too fast," he replied as he started pushing the wheelchair really fast. I guess it's nice that I'm awake now. I just hope not TOO much changed. I guess it's not too bad that I messed everything up and Mordecai still only sees me as a friend. Well, I guess I'll just wait a little longer. I mean, I've already waited this long, why not another couple months or something?
