Chapter 14 - Hard Truth is Best served Cold I

SPECIAL CHAPTER : MAITRI'S POV

After washing up together, we crawled back into bed, I was still a little sleepy. Niv curled into me and I wrapped my arms around her, spooning her.

The next time I woke up, she was still fast asleep and I slowly stared at her face. Walking to the bathroom, I searched around for some painkillers. I was sure she would feel a headache when she wakes up.

After all, I just found one thing about my girlfriend. She had low tolerance to alcohol.

I smiled at her and then walked downstairs. A night together is usually followed with morning breakfast right?.

I was only hoping I don't mess it up because I have a tendency to overdo the salting. Humming to myself I pulled out my phone and searched on Doodle for the perfect Deathless breakfast.

Doodle was the fastest search engine here in the afterlife.

Bacon and eggs, coffee and toast.

Maybe I should include pancakes and cereal.

I dropped the phone on the cabinet and began to pull out items for my special English breakfast.

I turned the fire on and put the pan on it. I added a tiny ampunt of olive oil and turned to find the eggs from the fridge. Just then a scream filled the air and I involuntarily moved back. My palm landed on the hot stove and I reflexively pulled back.

"Ah, damn!", I groaned in agony.

The stranger, a woman moved close to me and grabbed my hand. She asked if I was okay and I just nodded.

Not only did grim Reapers have the ability to read minds, we could also heal fast. The woman who had grabbed my arm immediately frowned when he saw the blood begin to dry up.

I immediately retracted my hand and excused myself. The last thing I wanted was to reveal my identity to a stranger. I headed up the bedroom and straight for the bayhroom where I had earlier found the painkillers.

Rummaging through the small first aid kit, I pulled out some bandages and immediately wrapped the already healing burn up.

Then I went back downstairs to find the strange woman making pancakes. She saw my burn wrapped up and smiled.

"You must be the boyfriend we were searching for yesterday", she said with a smile.

Funny, but her smike reminded me of Nirvana.

I smiled

"Yes, I'm Mat"

"I'm Shanti", she whispered.

Shanti?

Isn't it a name for a person on afterlife probabtion?

I didn't question her however, because I knew that would be rude so I smiled, walking close to her so I could watch her fry pancakes.

I was taking notes so I can make some decent pancakes later on for Nirvana.

"Sorry about earlier. I didn't know Shayda had company", she said again

"No, no its absolutely fine", I said immediately.

I helped her out and it turned fine especially because she asked me if there was something I wanted to eat. We ended up making the English breakfast together and I told her it was a surprise for my girlfriend.

She laughed a little

"Young love is so romantic"

She nudged my shoulder gently and I immediately liked the woman. She was so carefree and refreshing to talk to. Perhaps she had managed to find the peace that she needed in the afterlife. Suddenly thoughts of Shanti, Nirvana's friend popped into my mind.

I wondered what she was currently up to and what she was scheming.

Suddenly, I was being pushed up the upstairs and I turned to see Shanti move her eyebrows up and then.

Then I heard my name as Nirvana called from upstairs and turned to look up the stairs at my beautiful girlfriend yawning like a 5year old. When I turned back, Shanti was already gone.

Strange.

I smiled at her and began to climb up. When I got to tge last step where she was standing, I immediately pecked her cheeks.

"Last night was the best night of my life. Thank you".

Then I left her frozen on the step. Walking into the room, I stiffled a laugh and sat down. Minutes later, she dashed into the room with wide eyes and sat down.

"Last night?...what happened last night?", she asked.

I smiled

"I had a wonderful time"

"we did it?", he asked in surprise. At this rate her eyes will bulge out of their sockets. I stifled a laugh and played it cool.

"such finish up Mat's special English breakfast first then I'll tell you all the details", I teased.

"No, no I don't need details, that is too embarrassing especially since I can't remember a thing", she said.

She grabbed the a plate of pancakes and turned, making sure her back was facing me before she began to eat.

Such a cutie.

After breakfast, she told me there was someone she wanted me to meet so we went downstairs where I sat down on the couch. But after several minutes, she walked out with a worried expression.

"Mat?, did you see someone around when you came downstairs earlier to make breakfast".

I nodded affirmatively.

"Where is she?", she asked eagerly.

"she left the moment she heard your voice", I answered.

Her eyes widened in fear.

"No, no she has to be here", she said in a breathless voice and headed towards me.

"Sweetie, what's wrong?", I asked her totally unaware of the fact that I had used the pet name that Maitri would have used.

Good thing she didn't notice.

"Mat, she can't do this. I literally just foumd her and I didn't even get the chance to talk with her because we had been busy looking for you. I didn't even ask for her name"

"Her who?. Baby you need to talk to me", I encouraged.

"My mother"

Her mother?.

"Yes my mother "

Her mother was Shanti?, the woman I had met earlier?. The woman who nearly gave me a fright?

But why was she missing?

Could it be that she ran away?

Why would she ran away when she literally just met her daughter?

For all these unanswered questions, I intended to find out at all costs. And with all that, Mat had completely forgotten one other mysterious event, for the first time in his grim reaper existence he had somehow gotten drunk.
