Chapter 41 - Facing the fire

[Idiota, Dimas! Idiota!]

Dimas begins to berate himself. This is what he gets for holding back, an invisible fire burning his shoulder and side. He should've thrown caution to the wind and punched a hole in Sebastian's chest. If the fire wasn't bad enough, Dimas also has to suffer through Sebastian's taunts and stupid laughter.

"Ha Ha HA! Come on, Dimas, you're not going to keep me waiting are you? You don't have many choices here. You could either give up now or wait for my fire to finish you off. Or…you could try fighting but that's a stupid idea, I can keep you at bay all day long."

Dimas slams his fist against the stone pillar. If only he had enough strength to use his ability again without running the risk of paralyzing one of his limbs. However, even if he did have enough strength, there's also the matter of getting close. Sebastian's fireballs are no joke. The fire may not actually be real but it's painful and draining. He can barely handle the two. Dimas once had the misfortune of having boiling water poured on his leg, that's what happens when you get into a fight in an active kitchen, and this burning is a lot worse. He does not want to experience the fires at their worst, like it or not, he'll have to brave the fire if he wants to have a shot at winning. Maybe it won't be so bad. The fire on his shoulder worsens almost as if reminding him to stop kidding himself.

Dimas tightens his blanket bracelet and takes a deep breath. This match is going to be over soon, who the winner is depends on Dimas's luck and fortitude.

[God, I hate this feeling, being between the wall and the blade. Screw this, I gotta rush in.]

Dimas unwraps his shirt from his arm. It won't do him any good to only shield one arm now. If only he had a hoodie, it would've shielded him better than a t-shirt. It'll have to do. Dimas hides his upper body, as best as he can, behind his shirt and runs from behind the rock.

"Don't you know when it's time to give up!" Sebastian starts to hurl fireballs at Dimas.

Dimas expected to feel the impact of the fireballs but remembers they're not even real, at least not in the physical sense. Still, it would've been nice to have some sort of impact because it makes him feel like he's protecting himself against nothing. It made him feel ridiculous.

Dimas ducks and rolls once he's in suitable range. He tosses the shirt at Sebastian mid-roll. It blinds and distracts Sebastian while Dimas goes in for the attack. Dimas punches Sebastian across the face. The hit dazes Sebastian, Dimas continues his assault. He lands hit after hit although they're not as fierce as when he fought Scott. If he wasn't exhausted, this match would've been over long ago. His arms begin to ache.

[Push through it. Push through it. Gotta hang on a little bit more.]

Dimas ignores his body's cries for rest. He can rest when this is over but for now, he has to fight. He can't give Sebastian any window of opportunity.

Sebastian starts to wobble. The hits are finally wearing him down. Even his attempts at recuperating are becoming less frequent.

[I got this.]

At the worst possible time, during one of Sebatian's recovery attempts, the burning on Dimas's shoulder and side intensifies. Dimas winces. That was all Sebastian needed. He brings his hands down on both of Dimas's shoulders. The force combined with the burning brings Dimas to his knees. Dimas grabs Sebastian's wrists, he tries pushing his arms away, but the pain is slowly draining his strength. Forget boiling water. Sebastian's touch felt like two white hot irons resting on his shoulders. With one hand keeping Dimas in place, Sebastian backhands Dimas's left cheek, and follows up with a punch to his right cheek.

Dimas begins to scream. He can't hold it back anymore. Not with his face feeling like it's melting. Sebastian moves his hand from Dimas's shoulder to his throat.

"You should've given up, kid." Sebastian tightens his grip. Enough to show he means business without cutting off Dimas's airway.

Dimas sees no escape except for a single move reserved only for real desperate cases. He punches Sebastian in the groin. Sebastian's eyes go wide as he also falls to his knees.

A shameful move but effective.

Dimas tries moving away but his body is in agony. The best he can do is crawl away slowly while on his back. It's in vain. Sebastian has already recovered and pounces on Dimas. Dimas tries to put his hands up in defense but Sebastian's punches and grabs leave them on fire. If Sebastian wasn't mad before, he is now. His punches are sloppy and wild but it doesn't matter, they get the job done and Dimas is completely at his mercy.

All of the pain makes it hard for Dimas to think. No time to think means no time to strategize. At this point, both of his arms are on fire along with his neck and most of his face. Sebastian grabs Dimas's face, Dimas tries to defend himself but it's a wasted effort, the burning spreads to Dimas's eyes.

The pain is too much. Dimas begins to writhe in pain. His screams silence the crowd. He wants to give up. Anything to make it stop. But he doesn't. He can't fail. His life is at stake. But what can he do? He's fried. He can't open his eyes. His upper body is on fire. Any thoughts he has are clouded by searing pain.

~ Forget the pain! Fight back! ~

The small voice gives Dimas a small sense of clarity. Dimas calls for every bit of strength left within him. He grabs Sebastian's head and slams it down on the ground next to him. Dimas doesn't stop there. He proceeds to pound Sebastian with everything he's got. He can feel Sebastian struggling, causing more fires to appear on his body, but he keeps going.

Dimas doesn't know how long ago his counterattack began. Could've been one minute or a hundred, he wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. However, he does notice one thing. Sebastian has stopped struggling but the fires rage on. Dimas stops out of confusion and fatigue. A hand appears on his shoulder. Dimas grabs it ready to retaliate but more hands stop him. A cloth is placed on his mouth and everything goes numb.
