Chereads / Girl Made of Song and Sorrow / Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Finally, the school day ended for the girl made of song and sorrow. Calliope stayed out of the way as a massive wave of students trampled each other to get out. Once everyone left, she began her walk to the door. To get to the front door she had to pass the music room, and doing so each day left an ache in her heart.

Today as Calliope passes the music room, soft piano music floods out. When she looks inside the room, she sees it is a boy sitting at the piano creating the music. The song that the boy is playing felt in tune with Calliope's heart.

The piece is somewhat tragic and melancholic. There are no cheerful melodies or rhythms. Instead, the rhythm is slow-paced and the melody takes Calliope through feelings of loss and heartbreak. Her heart of glass cracks a little more at how much she resonates with the sad song.

The girl made of song and sorrow has always been drawn to music. She would feel a fire ignite inside her at the sound of beautiful harmonies and would feel an invisible tug towards instruments. When Calliope was younger and much happier, she would even compose her own songs and sing them to herself. Her talent was unmistakable. If I listened closely, I could hear her soul sing. The best part of my days used to be hearing her sing. The songs of her soul used to be joyous and whimsical, now I don't hear any singing at all. There is only silence. The beautiful song that the boy in the music room now plays awakens a longing in Calliope, a longing for the happiness music once brought her.

That fire in her that ignited when she heard music has long been burned out.

Calliope managed to hold back her tears long enough to reach the front door. She began to cry as soon as she crossed the street. Despite her efforts, tears kept just streaming down her face. Something so insignificant as hearing a beautiful song isn't enough to make a person cry, but Calliope isn't any ordinary person.

As soon as she was able to control herself, Calliope started her slow walk home. It wasn't long before someone shoved her onto the ground from behind.
