"He should find out first," I said with confidence.
"Ms Brown in my office, now!", I could hear from the telephone. Lily nodded at me as if telling me to go. I gave her a look before I left. I kind of figured out why he called me. He probably found out that I told her that he liked the goth style, so he wanted to confront me.
"Mr Wilson? You called." He was sitting at his table, hands together and face darkened. I could tell that he was angry.
"Yes. Yes, I did. I wanted to confirm that you understand English. I was very much sure it was written on your resume."
"Um, I do know English. It's literally what I'm speaking right now."
"Hmm, then why do you find executing your instructions hard?"
"Well, you said to not let her kick up a fuss, and she did not. She did not shout nor throw things. She simply left."
He looked me square in the eye, almost as if he wanted to strangle me, but I smiled at him, not minding his look at all.
"What did you tell her?" He asked. He looked like he was extremely tired of this stuff.
"Well, I um, told her that...." I mumbled the rest because he looked like he wished to strangle me.
"Told her what? Ms Brown." He enquired.
"I told her you were gay. But it's ok. I support you. You can come out of the closet whenever you want." I comforted him. More like I was pushing his buttons since I knew he was not.
"I am NOT gay, Ms Brown." He almost shouted at me, but he did not.
"Really? Well, your dressing sense is misleading."
"Ms Brown, get out."
"Yes, sir!" I knew he was super angry at me so I immediately left. Surprisingly, he did not make the rest of the day hard for me. There was an important collaboration taking place at Revolution, so he was quite busy. No wonder he did not have time to make it hard for me. While managing all the never-ending documents, it became quite late. Luckily, the company arranged transport for its employees. Unluckily, I cannot let them know that I stay at a hotel, since the drop off location would be recorded for safety purposes, I did not want to risk it. I could ask them to drop me off at a place further from the hotel, but that street is extremely busy. Many 5-star restaurants and companies were on that street, so it is not exactly low key. The people on the 24th floor already left; I did not know about the other floors. Only Chris and I were left, unfortunately.
As he passed by my desk he asked, "Are you not leaving?"
I stood up and answered, "I was actually, Mr Wilson. I was just booking an Uber."
He narrowed his eyes and looked at me weirdly. Of course, he gave such an expression, even though he was a jerk he was not an evil person.
"I'll drop you off." He said. Before I could reject him, he already walked past me. So arrogant, I thought. Since the laptop was already shut down, I grabbed my ID card and hand-bag and ran after him. "Mr Wilson!"
However, he did not stop. "Mr Wilson, I will leave by myself. I do not need a lift." If I was not staying at a hotel, I would have considered taking his help. At that moment, I decided to find a home sooner than I needed it because I figured that there would be many days when I should work late at night. I cursed my heels because I could not run in them and he already reached the basement by this time with those long legs of his.
"Get in." He instructed. He was not giving me another option. If the situation was different, I would have found it sweet because he was looking after his employees. But it is not that situation, and I did not have a good impression on him.
In the end, I was forced to get in. Out of habit, I got in the back seat and buckled the seat belt. I sat there for 2 minutes waiting for him to start the car, but he sat there like a log with his hand on the steering wheel. He was staring at me angrily. At first, I wondered what's wrong with him since he was the one who suggested dropping me off. Then I understood, I shook my head and sighed as I got out of the backseat and got into the front seat. He smirked and started driving at a high speed. He was angry at me since I treated him like a driver and sat in the backseat. "Where to?" I gave him the direction to the hotel. At first, he thought I was kidding and told me that my 'joke' was not amusing. I explained that me and my parents had a falling out and I stayed away from them and in the hotel. "How can you afford the hotel? Did you sell your house?" he taunted. I gave him a look as if saying 'dude, seriously?', and that look worked. He cleared his throat and said, "Go on." Ignoring his comment, I told him that I was friends with Prunella and she was covering the costs for now. He was aware of Prunella since he saw her in few events. She lives in the same city. He raised his eyebrows as if it was unbelievable for me to know influential people. "What? Can I not have rich friends?"
"I did not say anything."
"Sure, you didn't." I scoffed. I was not used to being treated this way. Maybe this is what happens when you're not popular. He dropped me off at the hotel in awkward silence. "If possible, move out as soon as possible. The money per day is not less in this hotel." He quickly left without waiting for my reply. My money, my wish! I wished to yell at him. Luke is going to pay, so what's his problem? He should mind his own business. Humph.
The next day, Lily surprised me by showing me many affordable and beautiful single bedroom houses for me. I was surprised that Chris was actually this considerate. Soon, I understand why he helped me. When I mentioned 'falling out with my parents' he related with me. He was reminded of the days of his past when he had parent troubles. He is not all bad, I thought. Lily was set to leave tomorrow since she thought that I'm finally ready to tackle whatever tantrums Mr Wilson throws. Honestly, I think she was too bored since nothing interesting was happening, so she decided to leave. Everybody thought of hosting a 'farewell' party for her since she was the only secretary who lasted this long.
I finally got a break after a lot of paperwork. I was just about to take a bite of the aromatic chocolate muffin when he called me to his office. I scowled at him, which was audible to him. Since my cabin was opposite to his, he could see what I was doing. This meant that he knew what I was doing. I grudgingly dragged my legs to his office.
"We're going out. Follow me."
"Why?" I asked, openly showing my annoyed feeling.
He just looked at me arrogantly, not wanting to explain himself. "Why? Sir." I asked in a respectful tone that was totally fake. He did not reply, he took his coat, wore it and left, leaving an angry 'me' behind. I kept mumbling to myself while I followed him unwillingly, glaring at him from time to time. Soon, we reached Kronos, a very popular and very expensive clothing store. The clothes were mostly for men, but designer women wear was also available but limited in edition'd. Reluctantly, I dragged my feet out of the car and followed him inside.
"Ms Brown, since you are an expert in fashion…." He said mockingly, "Choose an appropriate outfit for me for Lily's farewell party. If I am satisfied, I will buy you a dress as well, whatever may be the cost." He continued arrogantly.
His words, the way he talked, seemed as if he was doing charity for me since I 'cannot' afford clothes from this store. I was not going to sit back taking his words. "Sorry, I don't know the gay style." I shrugged. I totally take back the little bit of good feelings I had for him. No matter how hot he was, in the end, he was a jerk. Like I expected, his face immediately darkened. I smirked at him. I started browsing through the options, wondering what would be appropriate for Lily's farewell party. I got to say, no matter how annoying Chris may be, he was a handsome guy. He would absolutely rock any outfit.
Just for fun, I took out a baby pink shirt with a white coat, I was expecting him to be hesitant about the colour choice but surprisingly he took the outfit and tried it on. Gosh, did he look cute? Yes, yes, he did. No matter how hard I denied it, he was looking cute and almost like a good person. I chose an all-black outfit as well, which he tried on, and he looked good in that too. He looked like an angel in the first one and like a devil in the second one. Now, I did not have admiration. Instead, I was jealous that both suited him. I chose over nine shirts in different colours, hoping something would not look good on him, but I stood corrected. With a very dissatisfied expression, I went to the women's section because I did not want to see his face any more. I randomly chose a few dresses for myself.
One was black, one was red, and the last one was white. I tried them on when he was paying for the shirts he just bought. He literally bought everything he tried on, even the one with a weird cheetah print. I wore the black one, it was an off-shoulder dress with a leg slit. The red one was sleeveless and long, and the white one had many ruffles and was knee length. The mirror was outside the trial room, so I had to come out after trying on each dress. I was not expecting him to buy me a dress, not after the remark which I made. What I did not know was that he saw me every time I came out and checked the dress. I left the dresses in the trial room, thinking that I should buy them once I start using my credit card. They were simply too beautiful. By the time I came out, they finished the billing. He bought a total of twelve shirts. He shoved two bags in my hand, telling me to wait in the car. I did not think much of it. If I had known he was going to buy me all three dresses, I would have tried on more. So sad, a wonderful opportunity missed.
After we reached the office, he looked as if he was hesitating to ask me something. I was thinking to thank him for buying me clothes and for helping me find houses. "Um, Mr Wilson, I wanted to thank you for buying me these dresses and for helping me find a house."
"Ahem, you don't need to be thankful, I will deduct the cost from your salary, and as for the houses part, it was not me, it was Lily." He said without batting an eye. Though I was annoyed that my salary would be cut, he did help me find houses. Such a tsudere, I thought. No wonder he was single; He did not know how to behave with a girl. He should have taken credit for the things he did do instead of pushing all the credit on someone else. Sigh, high IQ but low EQ. Look at his brother. He was much better with girls, he was such a flirt.
He must have thought that I would argue with him since he was surprised when I left without saying another word. Lily was having the time of her life. She was flirting with the office guys, not considering their age. She flirted with an innocent intern, making him blush so hard that people thought of calling the ambulance. Being Chris Wilson's secretary was a hard job since he was a perfectionist, not satisfied that easily. Considering this, the pay for the position went up significantly since the beginning, and Lily, who broke all records by working under him for 2 years, definitely earned a lot. She told me that she would go to London, Berlin, Rome, Barcelona and other places of Europe. Lucky one, I must say. She's not forced to marry someone whom she did not even meet or be looked down by her father. She was like a free bird.
