Chapter 38 - A helping hand

Edward and Hugo lead the attack on the enemy camp beyond the hill. They charged down the slope while shooting at the enemies that they caught off guard. The soviets weren't able to react quickly so most of them were killed before they could even hold their guns.

"Roger's company was able to push the enemy back. They reported that the enemy tanks retreating this way." Jacques stated.

"I'll find a way to slow them down. Phillip, let's go." Hilbert replied before running north bound.

Phillip and the rest of their squad followed behind Hilbert as they flanked north. They brought a tank buster with them, they were going to intercept the enemy tanks before they get to Jacques and the others. Hilbert found a defilade and he positioned several soldiers with tank busters along it.

"Hit the ends first, I'll take care of the others." Hilbert ordered as he gestured for Phillip to follow him.

"Sir, what do you need me to do?" Phillip asked.

"Put this on and lie on the road." Hilbert replied before handing Phillip a soviet uniform.

Phillip wore the uniform and laid down on his stomach by the road. Hilbert ran further up the road and got down on his stomach. He waited for the sound of the engines before signaling to the others to prepare. Phillip took a deep breath before holding it in and pretended to be dead. Hilbert counted down in his head as he saw the first tank drive up the road. Phillip felt the ground shake as the heavy tanks began to inch closer to him.

"Almost there, just a bit more..." A soldier mumbled as he placed his finger over the trigger.

The tank commander on the leading tank spots Phillip on the road and orders the other tanks to stop to a halt. He ordered one of the crew to go out and check the body. Hilbert looked to the others and gave the signal. Both tanks on the ends of the column bursted in flames after several tank busters hit their hull. A tank in the middle scrambled to move down to the side of the road but Hilbert quickly climbed onto the turret, he shot the commander and dropped a grenade inside before closing the hatch. Phillip got up and ran towards the second tank that was being distracted by their squad mates. He shoved his gun barrel through the observation slot of the driver and emptied an entire magazine inside. One of the crew opened the hatch on the turret and shot at Phillip but missed. Hilbert shot the crew mate three times on the back before hopping down. Phillip climbed up the tank and pushed the dead body back in before dropping two grenades inside and closing the hatch.

"Умереть Ланстонские свиньи!" The tank commander of the last tank shouted before their tank fired a shot at the soldiers by the side of the road.

Hilbert took a tank buster before aiming it at the back of the turret and firing it. The turret went up in flames and the tank commander was burned to death. The smell of burning flesh plagued the air as the screams of the dying drowned out the distant gun shots.

"Don't bother checking for survivors. If there are any, they'll suffocate to death." Hilbert orderd before walking down the road.

"Sir, the major went over the radio and ordered us to assist the other company." One of the soldiers stated.

"How many tank busters do we still have?" Hilbert asked.

"We only have four left. Enough to disable two tanks." Phillip replied.

"Give them to me. Phillip, take the others back and help Jacques." Hilbert ordered.

Phillip took the remaining tank busters and handed them to Hilbert before gathering their squad and jogging back to the enemy camp. Hilbert took out another syringe and injected the fluid into his forearm. He then sprinted down the road and followed it up north to where Roger and the other company is fighting off the larger enemy force. Hilbert got to the forest and didn't slow down despite the obstacles in his way. His agility stood out, dodging and avoiding trees despite sprinting at superhuman speeds. Once he got to the other side, he saw Roger's men along with the Colonel's troops rounding up prisoners. He saw Johann and Teresa sitting by a tree stump and walked over to them.

"What are you doing here, Hilbert?" Teresa asked.

"Jacques said that you guys needed assistance." Hilbert replied.

"We did...but then that guy showed up." Johann added before pointing to a fully suited soldier.

"That looks like one of the new suits the doctor was working on." Hilbert commented.

The soldier in the full suit of armor walked towards the three and took off his mask to reveal Jeremy. He smirked and swung his gun behind his back.

"Hilbert. I owe you one. The doctor did a great job, huh?"; Jeremy said as he showed off the armor.

"You're one of us now. Except, you're not a Sparrow." Hilbert replied.

"The doctor never used exo-skeletons on Sparrows. This must be the new project he was working on." Teresa added.

"He calls it Hornet. The next generation of supersoldiers." Jeremy stated.

"Soon, you guys will be replacing us. I guess it's inevitable for us to be replaced by stronger weapons." Johann jokingly said before chuckling.

"You have a special use, you Sparrows. You don't stand-out from the masses. Don't belittle yourselves just because I'm a newer model." Jeremy also joked.

Timothy approached the four of them and told them about the victory of the other company. Timothy told them to take one of the jeeps so they did and they drove back to where Jacques and the others are. Tristan and Phillip greeted them and was surprised to see Jeremy sitting on the back of the jeep.

"Oi! Jeremy's back!" Tristan exclaimed.

"The Sarge is back!" Phillip also shouted.

"I missed you too, guys. The facility was boring without anyone sane to talk to." Jeremy replied before laughing.

"We thought you'd never come back." Edward added before smiling.

"Who do you think I am? I'm a hellhound, I'll just come out of hell again if I die." Jeremy jokingly said.
