Chereads / Reincarnated as a Cat girl / Chapter 37 - Copycat

Chapter 37 - Copycat

~4 months later~

Hello everyone, I'm back with more stories to tell!

If only I knew who I was monologuing too. Why am I so weird?

Anyways, I've been super busy with school, and work, and a million different things, but allow me to recap the past few months before so you all can know of my amazing exploits. I've been so busy in fact that I had to find creative ways to have fun, I typically tailored these fun segments of time to work towards my skills that I don't use too often, namely stealth, and Mimicry.

Typically this resulted on me pulling pranks on other people because that was what was fun and what the skills were best suited for. In my efforts I found that Mimicry was a very interesting ability. The skill in essence, allowed me to copy any physical characteristic that I can see and comprehend from my surroundings. For example, I could copy someone's voice after hearing it for a short while, I could change my skin and hair color depending on the colors I see or have seen, And though this was still a heavy work in progress, I could somewhat transform into someone else after looking at them for a prolonged period of time it was a really fun skill.

The transformations limiters were annoying. I needed a perfect idea of what the other person looked like, preferably naked, because it made it easier to copy anything in it's base form, I had to manually learn the person's tendencies and quirks if I wanted to make a convincing performance, and It only changed my physical appearance. Any form of detection magic, or advanced sense could break the disguise. This typically dissuaded me from trying all that often. I also wasn't very good at making the transformation quite perfect. Despite this it was still a fun skill to prank people with, and I still got myself the nickname Copycat, because of my tendency to perfectly mimic voices, and actions.

Anyways onto the recap, Let's begin with school.

My General studies class, which I didn't realize was the name of the class until here recently, as of this coming week will be changing to a Adventuring 101 class. It was a team building class of sorts. Monsters are naturally far stronger than people, people make up for this difference in strength using skills. At higher stages of evolution, Monsters are able to use Mana cores inside them to manipulate the world around them like free form casting just better in every way, and are basically able to replicate skills through their natural biology. Monsters, unlike intelligent species are not capable of gaining skills.

Because people are weak, and unpredictable adventurers typically form groups called parties to safely and successfully complete quests. For the first quarter of this new class schedule, we'll be assigned to different teams to work on our cooperation with strangers. None of use are really strangers, but the other kids often keep to their own groups so we've never really spoken more than a passing hello. I guess it might have to do with that, not quite sure. The point is learning to coordinate between people you know little about.

After we'll form our own parties of four and practice together for the exams at the end of the year and a series of low ranked quests, our equivalent of a summer book report.

In Magic, there is nothing new to really mention about the class itself but I have progressed a lot with my affinities. I tried all the forms of magic, but I think free form and invocation work best for me. Free form is really simple to use you just envision your end goal, and let the Mana flow from you and boom, Magic! Apparently it's supposed to be a lot harder than that but I digress. The more Mana you poor into your attack the bigger or stronger it gets, that part is up to the user. Invocation was easy because I've gotten really good at remembering and reciting things perfectly here recently. The others are either confusing to me or make me feel really stupid, which I found is really distracting in a fight. The only annoying part is there are few invocation spells that work with my affinities.

With Sunfire, I made the most progress, and found a bunch of different ways to use it. I can use it to increase my speed and strength, and can light myself and weapons on fire without harming myself. I also found ways to form the basic attacks into various other forms like an arrow which penetrates deeper than a normal attack, or something similar to a flash bang and a camoflauged time bomb. I can also do a rough manipulation of the element to erect a wall of flames or condense light in a spot away from me similar to a magnifying glass.

For moonlight I found it was decent at healing and debuffing with a relatively high capacity for attacking. I had the regular attacks and could change the shape of the white glass to things like arrows or knives. My control wasn't as good with constructs bigger than those. I also could use a variation of healing magic to stop, injuries like bleeding, and Poison but also to heal smaller wounds. My favorite part was the manipulation. I could erect a wall or wave of mist that would chill the target, make them drowsy and slowly start eating away at them, slowing movement and reaction time, or control mini white constructs that had a slightly corrosive edge that didn't do much more than some superficial surface damage but ate through anything I tested it on with little to no resistance. Only issue was it was relatively slow and easy to escape compared to my Sunfire.

Void was an interesting one as well. I found out that from the black filled cracks I could extract the black parts and manipulate it's shape into anything I wanted. The more Black stuff I wanted, I could either open multiple holes or just force it to grow, both draining about the same amount of mana.

Onto the Combat class this was the class I would say I made the most progress in. In the time I was in the class I made it to varying stages of intermediate mastery with Shortswords, Greatswords, Bows, Daggers, Throwing knives, and we're just finishing Spears/ javelins. Spears and javelins were put together because it is rather impractical to just bring around a bunch of throwing Spears to fight with, and even the system recognizes them as the spear mastery, but they are technically different weapons.

I'm most proficient in daggers and throwing knives, and they are also the most fun to use. I love the rapid attacks, and the flexibility of the weapon. Unlike the other bigger weapons they are easier to manipulate in your hands, and together they don't allow your opponent the option of regrouping. The knives are also small enough that I can use telekinesis to grab weapons that have been knocked out of my hands or redirect airborne weapons to really screw with my opponent. Spears are a close second because it's just really fun to play around with poles that have sharp tips. My favorite type of spear was the halberd and it was also the one I was going to ask Balor to make of me. I wasn't the only one making progress. I almost no longer have to limit my physical abilities to be in the same realm as the others in my class, I'm still faster and stronger than the others but not by much anymore.

So far I've been top of my class in every subject, except cooking where I'm second, only to Lyric, who I will admit is a better cook than me. I'm a good cook don't get me wrong, but their is something magical about his food that just make you feel happy, and regardless of what it is, it's fantastic.

In Magic I'm not too far above the others, and everyone has their own style. Emmy has a unique affinity called creation, which allows her to create anything she wants but she has to have a relative understanding of how it's built, I think. Either that, she isn't that creative of a person, or there are other requirements for her to make something. Everything she creates is made of a solidified light and dissipates after some time. Her affinity makes it so free casting is the most effective choice allowing for her to throw off her opponent, but I have seen her make some impressive weapons with incantations.

Caroline has the affinity Hell Fire, which is an odd combination element of earth and fire that is more focused on destruction than anything else. She also has a skill that can imbue status effects into her attacks physical and magical but it takes a while to charge and use. She typically uses self made chants to incorporate it into her attacks as fast as possible, but she also is able to use spirit magic. The spirits name is Kindle and actually lives in her little tiger stuffed animal that I forgot she had.

Tanya came as a surprise, when we all found out she Had space magic. She didn't even know she had it. Not all of ones affinities are given when a person Receives their system and these are called hidden affinities. Some just have to be discovered while others are awakened through traumatic events or unlocked or something of that nature. They found me with a book about space and time magic and as a joke Tanya tried to use one of the spells. Long story short it worked and luckily no one got really hurt. She's gotten pretty good at incorporating it into her sword attacks making it so she can attack at any distance, and according to the book and her current progress, she's not far from learning short distance teleportation.

Lyric possessed the Ice affinity. He typically used freeform casting and was really good at staying connected to his spells. He and I sparred every once in a while and his personal favorite attack to use is to lay a thin sheet of ice on the ground and change the footing under his opponent or just making small blades to cut into your legs and feet. It was really annoying. To make matters worse for other opponents we were both already good at moving on ice.

Gram had strengthening and reinforcement magic these were standard non-element magics that were of the most common variety. They boosted his strength, defense, weight and other aspects that allow him to take hits better and hit harder, basically turned him into a walking fortress. Slow and Simple but highly effective.

Eric had Holy and fire magic. The funny part is that Holy magic is part fire so he doesn't use the second often. His holy magic is a combination of fire and light, like my Sunfire only it has the high capacity for healing, is way less destructive, and in my opinion is way less cool.

Julien Is an unusual one. He can use something called enchantment magic. It allows one to imbue an object with magical effects, and can be amplified through the use of runes. The effects can be anything he really wants, but the effects strength and duration, are effected by the size of the object, the effect itself, and Mana he puts into it. Both strength and duration can be raised and lowered proportionally as he wishes.

I know a lot about them, but they don't know much about me. I have kept my past life, my void element, Cynthia, and my current strength a secret. The first because they probably wouldn't believe me, and it had no chance of making my situation better, but a good chance of making it worse. The rest were because I was warned, and because I didn't want the people around me to feel inferior. I didn't want to lose anyone I had gotten close to, so I made it so as far as they know I am a little quirky, possibly delusional, but still normal.

Squishy heartfelt stuff aside, despite my busy schedule their have only been a few worth mentioning events that have transpired in the past months.

First, Balor has officially opened his Blacksmith shop. I had been it's first ever customer, of course, and I must say he is amazing. He claims he's rusty and said it was a good weapon, but the sword he made me was ok at best when the material was put into consideration. I know a lot of people would choke if they heard that, because it was the best made weapon I've ever held by a long shot. The weapon he had created was the Shortsword he made of the mysterious metal, though I feel the name monsterous metal fits it better now. Nevertheless the weapon felt light and we'll balanced, it was sharp and from the tests we did with it, incredibly durable and resistant to chips.

The sword itself had some cool little extra for effects as well. First the metal was charged with some form of electricity and poison. Whenever the sword makes contact with another object, a slight jolt of electricity is released. I pricked my finger on the sword and it made me twitch a bit, not powerful but annoying. The poison was good at making the opponents moves heavy and slow, this according to the system I didn't actually test it. The sword could also channel lighting, because of the gems, and I also found I could channel Mana into the blade and use it as a catalyst for my void magic. It uses the blade like the black portals, and I could use my void magic to change the shape of the blade a bit but not so much it no longer is a Shortsword. The last cool part is it has self repair, so I don't need to worry too much about breaking it.

Here's the systems analysis of the sword.

Mana Conductivity, is a weapons ability to channel Mana and become stronger. It can apparently be ranked F - S. The higher the rank the better the boost to damage per point of mana.

[Mana Conductivity Table]

F - 10%

E - 30%

D - 60%

C - 100%

B - 200%

A - 500%

S - 1000%

[This list is brought to you by the greatest system of them all, Cynthia]

Mana Conducting, and weapon skills eat away at the durability of a weapon too, but I don't need to worry too much about that.

The sword wasn't the only weapon Balor made me. He also made me a long sword, a pair of daggers, and a set of twelve throwing knives

The other weapons are almost the exact same, only having different attack and durability.

I've digressed, back to the important events. the second thing that happened was there was another placement competition. I managed to maintain my place at the top, followed by Emmy in second, Lyric in third, Tanya in fourth, Eric in fifth, Caroline in sixth, Julien in seventh and Gram in eighth. This time around we actually fought with each other a little bit when it was our time to join in, and I showed my skills in weaponry, with the training weapons of course.

The third point of interest was I made it to max level with my class. I actually made it to max level a while ago, but I was too busy to get a class change. I would have made time if I needed to, but Cynthia told me the extra levels I gained would automatically be stored for the next class.

I should probably explain how the leveling works. Humans were given classes and skills to give them an edge over monsters since they don't evolve. Therefore reaching milestones in a skill's progress gives you a level in your class typically every five levels. Each level gained this way grants the person bonus stat points based on their class bonuses. However leveling up this way does not give you the extra stat points of the class, so it is recommended to get a high level class before leveling up a bunch because regular humans have a limit to the number of times they can reasonably level up. Regular levels gained through experience, grant a racial bonus, a class level, and an added stat points bound based on the class. It should be noted that progression in a skill irrelevant to your class will not provide skill points, unless it's grade rank changes.

Confusing? Yes. Stupid? Possibly. But, it's the way the world works, I didn't make the rules.
