Chapter 8 - March 12, 1990 - Gladiolus (Part 2/6)

From this point, the point of view shifts from Eleven's to Bonn's.

A beautiful lady in violet sits in the corner of my vision. She's so beautiful. Her gestures so subtle, graceful and carefully curated. Her smiles, timid yet golden. Her poise, non-powering yet apparent. She suddenly grabs a beverage and starts drinking it.

"Want a muffin to go with that juice?" I asked her.

"No thanks, Bonn" she answered. "I'm on a diet, I'd get too guilty eating that. Besides, I get a tad bit messy when eating baked goods."

I chuckled. She doesn't need to go on a diet. She's pretty enough. Besides, seeing her eating messily just makes her even cuter.

"Nonsense, Eleven. You look as fine as 24-karat gold."

Facts here. She looks so beautiful and perfect that probably even angels can appreciate her beauty.

"Thanks, Bonn."

She smiled. Oh crap. I can't help but smile back. You know that feeling that you'd feel red if you'd try to hold back a smile? Yep— I'm having that exact feeling that right now.

"I'm serious though. You look so stunning that it actually hurts." I chuckled off the butterflies.

"Stop Bonn!" She laughs. "You know, if you keep doing that, I'm going to think that you like me."

But I do. I do like you. I've known you since high school and until now, I haven't liked anyone else. I can still remember the very first time I met you. Guess that's a story for another day.

"Don't I?" I replied.

Oh crap. Crap crap crap crap crap. I shouldn't have said that. Now I've made things awkward. Too awkward actually. Both of us suddenly fell silent.

Just kidding." I laughed it out. "You thought that I was serious, didn't you? I can't—"

It actually hurts to lie to you like that. I want to shout that I like you, but I just can't. Fear stops me from pushing through.

"Gosh Bonn, stop doing that, really." She replied.

"By the way, do you have a partner already?" I asked her. I started to look for potential partners. Then, I saw Sol in a distance, walking in our direction. I should just seal the deal. "You don't have one, right? As far as I know, no one's here."

"Um actually—"

"Actually, I'm her partner." Crap. It's Sol. I knew it. This guy always appear whenever I go near Eleven nowadays. Is he her boyfriend or something?

"You're his partner?" I asked. Why bother asking I thought. It just adds more salt to the wound.

"Yeah, he is." Eleven replies. Those very words feel like sticks on my heart. I feel suffocated.

Realizing that I need to leave, I told them, "Okay, I'm going to leave you two alone now."

Crap crap crap. I quickly ran to the exit. I feel like my eyes are starting to sting. I should just grab my breath and head out. I feel like the longer I'll stay inside, the more It'll pain me. I can feel my tears flowing my cheek now.

As I approach the exit, I just can't help but think. I liked her first, I met her first. We met first. We made memories for longer. We were friends for longer. Maybe, I was just friend zoned.

From this point on, the point of view shifts from Bonn to Sol's.

"Can I fancy you to a dance?"

"Sure." she replies.

I take her hand and bring her to the center of the dance floor.

Now Playing: Up Where We Belong (1982) by Jennifer Warnes & Joe Cocker

Who knows what tomorrow brings

In a world few hearts survive

All I know is the way I feel

When it's real, I keep it alive

She is so stunning. Every whirl of her dress and every whip of her hair makes my heart rate fluctuate.

The road is long

There are mountains in our way

But we climb a step every day

I approach her ears, and carefully whispers "You look so beautiful today, Eleven"

Love lift us up where we belong

Where the eagles cry

On a mountain high

Love lift us up where we belong

Far from the world below

Up where the clear winds blow

She turns away. I see her blush. "Thank you", she answers.

Some hang on to used to be

Live their lives looking behind

All we have is here and now

All our lives, out there to find

The road is long

There are mountains in our way

But we climb a step every day

The world slows down for a moment. The Earth stops it's rotation. Everyone else fades away just like thin air. The atmosphere is hot. The air is humid.

Love lift us up where we belong

Where the eagles cry

On a mountain high

Love lift us up where we belong

Far from the world we know

Where the clear winds blow

"By the way, Sol" Eleven asks.

Time goes by

No time to cry

Life's you and I

Alive today

"Hmm?" I reply.

Love lift us up where we belong

Where the eagles cry

On a mountain high

Love lift us up where we belong

Far from the world we know

Where the clear winds blow

"Are you free this next weekend?" She asks me.

"Why are you asking me?"

"Can you help me pick out a gift for a friend?"

Love lift us up where we belong

Where the eagles cry

On a mountain high

Love lift us up where we belong

"Sure." I answer as the song ends.
