Kayle and Chrome bid goodbye to Joshua, and the e-car accelerated 'til Eulim City's digital ark boundary. There were some police stationed in the city exit. The policemen were given orders to look inside every car that passed by, and see if there was anyone who was green-skinned. Luckily, Chrome's skin experiments in the research facility and his past illegal job had given him enough experiences to enable him to quickly change his color. Before they approached the checkpoint, he grabbed Kayle's arm, and copied his skin color. It was a very advanced technique, and he had almost perfected it.
"Can you show us your I.S. Codes," the policeman ordered. "There's a criminal on the loose."
In Chrome's mind, he was already cursing D.M. Cadre. He's not a criminal! Well, he was, but they made him an obedient test subject. He felt relieved that he was already back to being his old self, the Chrome who had the freedom to have a purpose in life, and not the Chrome who blindly followed the D.M. Cadre.
Kayle was ready for this, he showed their I.S. Codes to the police. He had two codes printed and placed in a lanyard like a usual I.D. card. "Here, sir."
The policeman took the two codes and scanned it using their small equipment. A laptop was wirelessly connected to it, which was monitored by another policeman sitting in the police car. The equipment printed their information and the policeman read, "Kayle Smith... hmmm... okay..." he uttered as he took a look at Kayle's personal information. He then lowered his head to peek at the two inside the car, and compared their pictures in the printed data. "Carter McKee... Hmm..."
Under Sanno's request, Kayle had already made Chrome's new identity even before escaping the facility. Since they would be dealing with D.M. Cadre, they needed to make sure that they had completed their fake identities that they even made new clan family trees for themselves, complete with background stories. It was a lot of work. But they thought about the evilness hidden inside the facility, opposite to what they show the public that they're the mutants' ally.
"You're both cleared, you may go," the policeman said.
Kayle smiled at them, and quickly drove away.
As soon as they got away from the city, Chrome let go of Kayle's arm, and returned to his normal green skin.
"You rock, man," Kayle said, as he happily maneuvered his steering wheel. "Congratulations. We got away."
"Congratulations too, it's also because of your I.S. Codes," Chrome told him. The picture he had on his I.S. code information was edited. It looked like him, but with normal human skin, and so, the police saw that they looked alike. "It seemed like you're experts in these kinds of things."
Kayle laughed upon hearing his words. "You mean... expert in fooling people?"
"Slightly yes? It's your job to hack, right?"
"Yeah, we're full-time hackers," Kayle said. He suddenly remembered that they had to go somewhere else, before the Angeldame's mansion. "Where should we go first? You said that you'll be getting something..."
"Ah, yes. Just in Makylee Highrise Condominium."
They arrived in Makylee City in two hours, luckily, there was no traffic. Makylee Highrise Condominium is located at the central part of the city. Chrome had a contract with it and he was fully paid until year 2050. The owner of the condominium offered him a very secured unit, so his doors could only be opened using a high-tech eye scanning and face detection system. Also, the condominium owner himself offered him protection, in exchange for a favor that Chrome did for him in the past.
When they arrived in front of the condo, he borrowed Kayle's phone and contacted the owner. After seven missed calls, he answered.
"It's me. Green Peas." Chrome told him. It was his nickname before.
"Green!!! Hey!!!" the condominium owner shrieked. "What happened, where have you been?" he asked worriedly.
"Endon, calm down, let me explain," he replied. "But can we get inside? You know... the usual private elevator..."
"Ah, yes, yes, I'll call my security team and the receptionist... Please wait at the parking entrance."
"Thank you," and Chrome ended the call.
They went to the said parking entrance. Five armed men wearing the condo's security uniform greeted Chrome and Kayle, and led them to one of the private elevators. The Makylee Highrise Condominium is 20 floors high, and Chrome's condo unit is located on the 18th floor. His unit is just beside the condominium owner's room.
When they reached the 18th floor, Chrome felt nostalgic, remembering the days when he was still doing undercover work. It was high-paying, but illegal. He wouldn't want to go back to that filthy job.
The five condomium's security personnel patrolled the hallways of the whole 18th floor.
Endon Soland, the owner, had just opened his door, and he quickly walked towards them.
"Green Peas!" Endon said. "It's been a while... Oh, I see, you have company. It's unusual. You usually just go here alone."
"This is Kayle, one of those people who helped me get out of the facility," Chrome explained, and the two nodded at each other. "But we need to go soon. I'm just here to get my ledger."
"Okay, let's get inside your room."
Chrome let a scanner attached to his door to scan his eyes, and then his face. The secret to his ultra secured door was scanning his green-skinned face.
The door was unlocked. They walked slowly inside, and Chrome felt at ease in his own place. D.M. Cadre Research Facility had given him a complete set of cutlery in his kitchen because he loved baking, and his room was big, but it could never be compared to his old room. The room was simple but cozy. All furniture, walls, floors, and ceiling have color combinations of gray, white and black. His books, which he bought from the antique bookstores in Sambridge, were covered in dust.
Kayle wiped off the dust from one of the chairs and sat in it, as he listened to Chrome and Endon's conversation.
