Chapter 1 - Goodnight, Kaira

"When the moon came out,

I heard the howl,

As well a scream...

While someone was dying,

the other was becoming more alive"

"Dad... again?" A girl in the long inky hair thundered in low voice.

"Kaira" The old man holding the book replied, "I can't help myself when it comes to werewolves and other fantastic livings". She stood there with her dark coal-black eyes stared at him as a predator does on his prey. Then she looked away pretending nothing actually happened but still, had something to spell out.

Kaira was an average heighted high school student. She lives with her parents in East Boston Hill and is not only obsessed with her physical appearance but also with her clever mental skills. Still, things are not always good if it seems so. After her mother's death, she tried to cut off her connections with people but soon started to mix with them in order to show her father that things no more bother her now. It's way much harder to hide one's feelings than to bust it up.

"These are gibberish. I mean they are not even real. They are just imaginations that humans made for their entertainment. Stop reading these kinds of books" Kaira rolled her eyes, showing no interest. From her childhood, she found these concepts superstitious and nonsense. She always avoided it and tried to focus more on what she has in her life, which was fortunately real to be cared for.

"Maybe but when the right time comes, you'll know everything, Ms. Kaira Ensley Dankworth... after all, you are just 16" The old man teased her. Indeed, the old man was Mr. Dankworth, Kaira's father, with towering height and brown hair.

"What do you mean, I didn't understand" Kaira tried not to focus on his teasing but on what he meant.

Mr. Dankworth ambled towards Kaira and shook his head to mumble into her ears. "You'll soon understand".

For a moment she stood still, trying to figure out what exactly he indicated. By the time the silence was broken by Mr. Dankworth.

"It's already time, we need to get ready". He said and left towards his wife Mrs. Dankworth, to whom he married merely after 2 years of Kaira's biological mother's death.

Kaira looked down at her watch. It was already ten at the night. She faced her parents who were doing their final packing and then hopelessly watched out of the window.

Mr. and Mrs. Dankworth, Kaira's parents, were leaving for London tonight due to their medical purpose and promised Kaira not to worry, plus will return within a month. She was concerned about how she was going to pass her time alone this spring break but tried her best to conceal it. Her friends are going to enjoy this break. Abanoub told that he was going to Australia while Aiden would have already reached China with his parents. Ryan was on the way to his grandmother's house but yes there was someone here... Amethyst. She broke her leg in an accident so her parents had to cancel their trip to Canada.

"Kaira, come on darling it's time. Come downstairs" Kaira's stepmother, Mrs. Dankworth, called her. It seemed they were ready to leave for the airport. Mrs. Dankworth was a fair-haired fat lady. She was a neurosurgeon as well as an excellent stepmother who always tried to be friendly with her daughter.

When Kaira showed up she gently placed a kiss on her both cheeks and then hugged her tightly. "I know this is hard for you honey, but we can't do anything with this and we are sorry for spoiling your spring break. Hope you understand"

"Of course, I do mom and I love you. It's just a spring break" Kaira tried to act normal. She didn't want to show anyone what she was feeling at that instance. She never did. After all, death makes us either silent or furious. She chose to be quiet.

Mrs. Dankworth placed her hand on her cheek. "Oh, honey. I love you too"

"And I am sure Kaira, we'll make it up to you by bringing you a birthday present" Mr. Dankworth spoke out while packing up the luggage in the car.

"That would be great, dad. By the way, do you even remember when my birthday is?" Kaira asked doubtedly.

"31 Feb?" Mr. Dankworth raised his eyebrows with twisted his lips one side.

"Please, dad" She knew he was trying to tease her.

"All right Kaira, it's 21 July" Mr. Dankworth raised his arm to show he surrendered. Kaira gave him a blank look. She was not in a mood to laugh around because they were even about to miss her birthday.

"Take care of yourself. Eat food, sleep on time, don't forget to wear your eye contact lens while meeting or going out, return home before it gets dark, and yes... no funny business" Mrs. Dankworth bossily ordered.

"Fine. Mom." Kaira said while Mrs. Dankworth sat in the car.

"Bye, sweetheart"

"Bye, mom. Bye, dad" Mr. and Mrs. Dankworth waved their hand to Kaira, so did she. She watched them until their car vanished in black.

She stood under the cold dark sky surrounded by storm clouds until it started to rain down. She ran upstairs and went to the balcony to enjoy the cool breath of wind. Maybe the strike of breeze cools her hot head down, full of worries. But unfortunately, nothing could bring her distress down, at this very moment. There she saw the book her father was reading. She took it up in her hand and started to study it. "The tribe of Alkaniyata" She read "Maybe a time pass till they return". In a trice, it began to thunder. Kaira went to her bedroom taking the book with her.

"Let's see. What you hold in". She opened the book and started to read the contents.

"Alkaniyata Tribe - History... The Lupus and the humanus... Lycanthrope... Marking the one.... Moroi - The Bloodsuckers... Other creatures.... Absolute Rules...." She muttered "Umm... interesting. I wonder about the author who went to such an extent in order to imagine this kind of world".

She read further.

"Alkaniyata tribe stands on the soil of Earth for a long period... defending the weak humans...." Kaira read surprisingly and then commented "Wow, weak humans... Who's the author...?" She tried to find out the name of the author. "Yes... Mr. Ravin Reid Oaklyn. You got a lot of nerves man to write this"

She continued reading.

"defending the weak humans from the moroi (vampire). Alkaniyatas are more than a humanus (human) and a Lupin (Wolf). They possess the power of both. They are Lycanthrope, a shapeshifter. They can transform into lupin or a humanus whenever they want. They become very powerful when they hunt down a Moroi on a full moon day. In 1544 when the King Henry VIII of London sent his army of Moroi after the French of war and capturing Boulonge... Wait a minute. The author didn't even leave King Henry VIII. He is playing with history now" Her expectation with this book faded with time.

She looked at the clock. It was already 1 past 25. She was tired. The whole day she was helping her stepmother to pack up her clothes and even trying to ease herself that she can do everything on her own this vacation. She knew these holidays are going to be hard and boring as hell but she could just do is to try to keep on.

She decided to take a nap. She closed the book and placed it on the table beside her bed. She opened the drawer took a picture out with a lady who had a similar facial structure as Kaira to some extent. She held the picture near to her heart and closed her eyes.

"Good night, Kaira" She wished herself and in a matter of seconds, she fell asleep.
