Chereads / The Coward's Journey / Chapter 41 - By The Bell

Chapter 41 - By The Bell

John:... What the hell are you looking at right now?

Gen:... Uh... A corpse looks like.

John: ew! I hope not!

Gen: too bad. I'm right. Fucking Christ. Is that the ambassador? What is...? I need to get Vasallo! Before that, where the hell are you going?

John: up obviously.

Gen: obviously. What's there that you need to go to the bell?

John continues to climb the tower until he reaches the top.

John: your other ... piece.

John is met with another person coated in white as if all the color had faded from their being. He was standing by the bell looking out with his back turned to john.

Gen:... Fair enough. But that don't look like it will fit my stone, my liege.

John:... No kidding.

The person standing by the bell doesn't move aside from his long ghostly hair being pushed by the wind. John looks around the room but doesn't see the other Gemini stone piece. He releases his stars to search again but they only react to the person in front of him who instantly reacts back by turning his head completely around to meet Johns gaze. This frightened John and Gen and makes them lose their connection as they both fall back in shock. The person turns his body around and stands still again, not taking his eyes off of John.

John couldn't help but look back. He was looking at another replica of himself. This one had red eyes with black iris's that stood out from the rest of his pale being. Rexar removes himself from john and makes him return to being human. Rexar is in his lion form but this doesn't get the figures attention from john.

Rexar: ... Mirage?

John: wait, I thought the shadow was mirage.

Rexar: he is. And so is this. This must be the second being that existed in the stone without a need for awakening. Shadow mirage,... Gen, hardly ever mentioned this one and for good reason. He always referred to it as the husk or the void. Because something was always missing from the Gemini stone for some reason.

John: husk? Void? What the... So he's an empty shell.

Rexar: I would assume so since hes never appeared until now. Not even your father bothered trying to awaken it.

John:.... Then why is it here? Not in the stone? Is he awake now?

Rexar:... I wonder.

John stands and cautiously walks to the the white double. It hadn't move or blinked since he got its attention. John studies it for a while then lets his stars gather around it again. The body moves again and smiles as innocently as a child as if laughing from being tickled. There was no voice or breathing like Gen. It really was a puppet.

John:... It is a husk. Its completely empty inside like there's never been a soul in it in the first place. I can control him like a puppet but it still has a mind of its own somehow... Like looking at death.

John reaches out a hand to the body and tries to touch it. The stars gather to his fingers from the body the closer he got until the figure smiles strangely this time on its own and vanishes into black stars and falls to the ground leaving a stone ring behind. It was cracked but no pieces were missing. John picks up the ring and pulls the other piece from his satchel and combines them. The stars change color from light blue to dark red and ash grey. It looked like fire amber sparking from the stone as he held it.

Johns clear eye turns red and starts to water from the sudden pain he felt in it. His soon became able to see figures wondering around beneath him as if the building wasn't there. he saw gen in the secret room staring at him as if he could see him. Gen was riddled with blue stars as if he was made from a galaxy of them. He looks to Rexar who look the same. Both of his eyes return to normal and he blinks a few time to adjust back to his normal sight.

John: whoa...

Rexar: John?

John: ... I'm okay. Just a little... Loopy. Wow.

Rexar: what was that about anyway?

John: like I would know that.

Meanwhile...

After the "husk" disappeared, gen watched from johns point of view in fear from seeing it. He looks to the dead body that hung on the wall and gets chills sent down his spin. Gen leaves the room in a puff of smoke and moves through the shadows. John's sudden rush of power from connecting the stones got every ones attention. All of the guards were heading in John's direction.

Gen: oh, he has become error.

Gen rushes through the shadows of the guards and past them to make it to the top of the stairs where john was. When he meets him, he sees John's entire body was faded white minus his blue eyes. Nothing seemed to have changed in the room though.

John: Gen!

Gen: ... Uh... My liege?

John: what?

Gen:... You know what, I'll tell you later. We need to go. Your crazy light show got the whole tower in a panic.

John: light show!?

Gen:... Lord almighty. He's just like the man... Come on.

John runs to Gen and jumps into the shadow but is forced back out.

John:... What the... What!?

Gen: Urgh... Of all the ever loving...

The guards are heard rushing to the top of the tower.

Gen:...!! Forget it! Just jump!

John: what!!?

Gen: JUMP!!!

The guards rush up and one swings at Gen only to get a cloud of black from contact. John uses the opportunity to run to the edge and leaps off. The guards gather themselves and rush to the edge only to watch in shock. The sun finally rises and hits his white skin and hair turning back to its sun kissed complexion and ruby color. The white falling off him like dust. He suddenly stops falling and somehow stands on the rays of the sun like it was a bridge. He looks at his feet in surprise, then to the tower where he left the guards stunned beyond belief.

His eyes follow the tower down to the balcony where he stood near and sees Sicily staring at him just as shocked at his sudden appearance before her. She was about to head to were the guards were until she saw him land. Without a second thought she draws her sword ready to jump after him when someone screams from the other end of the building and distracting her. She looks away for a moment startled by the scream then looks back quickly to see John gone again. She cringes from rage and confusion then rushes to the scream.

The building started to fill with chaos as the nobles and their tenants and servants rush past her in panic as they are chased away by the mafia of the black market. They stop before her and instantly rush back with smiles on their faces, dropping the papers they held and leaving the area again. It was as if they had no interest in her rather than being scared of her. She pucks up the documents and reads them. Each one making her more furious than the last. She crumpled a few and storms back after the nobles when another scream is heard.
