Chapter 17 - sixteen

Cheating

"Thank you," Stavros shook the officer's hand. His face reddens as he bows once Stavros unlatched his hand from his. With a wave of a hand and they were all dismissed.

The police had dropped us in front of the manor. My mind in a haze, still. Who started the fire?

"Vena," my cousin called. I turned only to be crushed in his arms. "You set a building on fire?"

I felt the need to not tell a soul.

The corner of my lips rose, "Why? Does it sound impossible?" My tongue burned at the lie.

He responds with a laugh before greeting Stavros. I hurried to my room. Closing the door shut, I immediately plop on my bed. The fluffy white comforter soothing my tired state.

What did she want? Who is the so-called enemy? Trust? I didn't even know who to trust. I couldn't trust anyone. Not even my own blood. Questions swarm my head like bees speeding to their hive. My hands shivered. My eyes squeezed shut, the back of my head started to ache from the amount of times I've hit the wood.

A knock or two echoes. "Elixir."

I jolt in surprise, falling off of the bed. I moan in pain before announcing I'll be out in a minute. A yawn escapes my lips as I lift myself up.

"What—" Stavros marches into my room. I blinked twice before languidly closing my door. He took comfort in my room, plopping his back down my king sized bed. Craning his neck up, his eyes narrow at my statued state.

Licking my lips, I gazed at him. I didn't know what he wanted me to do. So, I stood awaiting for his command. "Elixir." he called once more. Propping himself up with his elbows, piercing at me with his intense gaze.

"Come here." He tilts his head.

"No."

"I didn't ask." He deadpans, "Now come here."

My feet moved to their own occurrence. Indolent steps. My knees hitting the soft mattress. Before I could even lay down beside him, he yanks me down. A surprised shriek leaves my mouth. His muscled-up arms snaked around my pancaked form. My breasts pressed painfully against his hard chest. Warm breath tickled my neck. I lost track of where my body stopped and where his began.

My eyes heavy. His warmth provided a sense of comfort. Languidly closing my eyes, I find my self swaying to a drowsy state. Fingers ran through my mane, unknotting some of the tangles.

"Your heart's beating loudly." I hear the familiar beat in soft notes, I felt it beat steadily with mine. "Do I excite you?" I slur.

A chuckle rumbles from his chest. "Always," I smile.

Silence envelopes us, only our hearts could be heard. An unsaid tacit, the butterflies in my stomach awaking. Two hearts, one soul. I heard shuffling of sheets as he grunts, adjusting his position.

"Are you asleep?" He mutters.

I'd make an effort to reply or to at least hum in response, yet I couldn't find it in myself to move nor make a sound. His hand halts in running through my hair, instead he tucks in a curtain of it that shielded my face from his gaze.

He puffs out a blow of air. "You're making it harder for me, I didn't plan on liking you this much. I never..."

"What?" I raise my head, lifting my body gently.

My brows knit together as I stare at him with confusion. His eyes detach themselves from my gaze, his hands slid down my hips.

What did he mean?

His Adam's apple bobbles as he clears his throat. "I didn't say anything." I shook my head. I refused to let it pass, my curiosity far too strong.

"Tell me,"

"Elixir, just go to sleep." He pushes.

"Why don't you finish your sentence?" I press further, "You never... what is it, Stavros?" I stare at him dead in the eye.

He's hiding... I'm not sure if it's deep or not but, I know it concerns me. Is my father even aware of his presence right now? How did he pass by my cousin, does he know? A hand on my shoulder jolts me in surprise. I turn to look at Zahir who pursed his lips before retreating his hand to the side.

Rosalynn toyed with the pencils that scattered on Zahir's desk. I now sat on the leather brown sofa in Zahir's office. Stavros refused to answer my questions, leaving me wondering. He left shortly after telling me he had to leave. Strange.

"I'm," he sighs. "I'm sorry... Vena I didn't know..."

I avert my gaze elsewhere, anywhere but his. He knew now, he must've gotten his underboss to dig through it. My failed engagement, the one I overreacted in. I more than likely looked pathetic or sensitive to them. It's embarrassing.

Rosalynn plants a tender kiss on my cheek, whispering reassuring words to my ear. "It's alright, Vena. No need to be embarrassed, you thought your life was over. It's okay." She rubs my shoulder in a comforting manner.

I chewed on my lower lip. Our conversation was all over the place. They talked while my mind wandered to Stavros' words.

What did he mean by he never meant?

"He plans to but—"

"Stavros said something weird," I look up at them. "He thought I was asleep, he said I made it harder for him. He didn't plan on liking me, what could that mean?"

Rosalynn's eyes narrowed into slits. "Is he cheating on you— Ouch!" Zahir slapped a roll of newspaper on her head. "Don't give her ideas, she's gonna overthink it."

"I don't think he would cheat on you; I mean, the man looks at you like he could rip the entire world in half if you asked!" He sat on the armrest with an elbow propped on top of my head. "If you want, I could order some of my soldiers to follow him."

I sigh. Debating with myself whether I should accept his offer or to leave it be. It'd be terrible if he is but, I trust him... right?
