Chapter 3 - 3. Mr. Chubbs

Camryn's POV

When I exited my cell there were similar doors; I assume that's where they keep other people like me for interrogation.

I had followed Angello through the giant house as he gave me a small tour of where everything was. The mansion was built like a labyrinth.

"To our right is the main living room and just further is the door that leads to the pool, tennis court, basketball court, gardens, and patio. And just down those halls is another living room meant for entertainment. This is where a majority of our people hang out mainly because there's a bar."

Angello went on and on but I couldn't stop ogling at everything.

Lastly he showed me to my room which was on the west corridor where many of the other workers slept.

"You have free range to go wherever you want, and you'll know where you're not allowed. There is no curfew but everyone is expected to be up at 6am ready to work by 6:30 unless told otherwise. We understand that the living situation is new to you so for the first week you're excused from tardiness, and mistakes, but after that there are consequences."

He opened the door to my room, and my jaw practically fell to the ground.

The room was simplistic but it was huge. The beige walls complemented the dark oak wood floors, and the large windows on either side of my bed were draped in off white curtains.

There was a flat screen tv on the wall opposite of the windows, and a small sitting area. To the left of the room was an empty built in bookshelf and double doors leading to a small balcony.

To my right was a huge walk-in closet adorned with shelves and empty hangers. It was practically as big as my kitchen at home.

Behind the door next to the closet was a bathroom far more luxurious than the room. Not only was there a giant jet tub, but a shower that could easily fit 4 people comfortably. The marble floors, and the pristine white walls with golden trim was captivating.

I looked to Angello leaning against the bathroom entrance.

"Is everything to your liking," he laughs.

"To my liking? This is far more than what I had expected," I say breathless.

At least if I was going to be part of the mafia I'd be able to live here. Shit you could kill me in this room and I wouldn't even complain.

"Dinner is served every night at 5:30; always wear something nice. Until then I'll leave you to get situated."

Angello walked out the room closing the door behind him. I ran towards the bed and jumped, falling on the heavenly plush.

This was it. This was my life now. A pawn in the mafia, not that I was complaining.

Meow…

Mreow…

Cat?!?

I listened for a small sound again and it led me to the balcony. Sure enough there was a cream colored domestic short-haired cat with crystal blue eyes waiting just beyond the glass double doors.

I opened one of the doors lowering myself to the cats' level.

"What are you doing here in a big bad place like this?"

The kitty tilted its head. Great now it thinks I'm crazy.

I picked up the cat gingerly, "you are one fat kitty Mr," I cooed while scratching his head.

The cat didn't have a collar, maybe it was a stray. Just to be sure I'll go find Angello and ask if he knows someone here with a cat. For now I'll call him Mr. Chubbs.

I set Mr. Chubbs down on my bed, "stay here," I warned.

I walked over to my door not noticing that Mr. Chubbs had followed me and as I opened my door he sped past me.

Panic welled up inside of me as I quickly closed my door and bolted after the cat. Mr. Chubbs sure was fast for a fat cat.

He led me up stairs, through long corridors and never ending hallways. I ran past people, jumping over furniture, and dodging past crowded areas,

"God dammit Mr. Chubbs can't you take a break please."

The cat didn't stop and my energy was slowly fading as I struggled to keep up with him. As I turned the corner though I ran straight into someone.

I fell to the floor staring up at the person I had just bumped into, and of all the people living in the goddamn mansion, I just had to bump into him.

"I-I…"

"Going somewhere?"

The man from before was unamused and I realized I was still on the floor. I stood up, brushing myself off.

"I'm sorry I was just...looking for a cat."

His face was emotionless, and those glacier eyes made me tense up.

"Watch where you're going next time," he grumbled walking past me.

"Yes of course, s-sorry."

God dammit, now where'd that cat go!

This time I was in no rush as I walked around the brightly lit halls admiring the pieces of art hanging every so often.

I heard another echoing meow as I turned the next corner to find Mr. Chubbs.

"There you are Mr. Chubbs, I've been looking all over for you."

I was about to pick up the mischievous cat when I heard the switch of a knife, and then felt it against my throat. Oh god what did I do this time!
