Their sprint ended at a clearing where Raymond stopped, and the rest followed suit. He took a few seconds tracing the ground as he tried to remember what he saw in the darkness of the night. He then found what he was looking for; it was a spot that the power lines passed under.
Placing his hands on the ground, he reached out with his mind and the earth began to shake, piece by piece, soil and grass began to lift as his concentration became more and more intense. As much as Raymond cherished the progress he had with his abilities and what he was accomplishing, it still took him a good three minutes to dig up two feet of dirt before he finally saw the underground wiring system. He turned with a smile to see slightly bored and annoyed faces.
"What?"
"You could've asked her to do it faster." Bob replied.
"Does anyone of you have a knife then?" Ray ignored him.
Bob pulled out a large hunting knife and handed it to Ray. "You know you're going to get electrocuted from whatever you planning on doing." Ray didn't reply and proceeded to cut the rubber insulator.
A few sparks flew out as the metal knife came in contact with the bare wires when he slashed along it. Once exposed, he dropped his hands to touch the wire before Bob stopped him.
"Dude, there is more than enough power to kill you several times over."
"Let him try Bob. You saw what he did to the Minotaur." Letting go off his arm, Ray proceeded.
A rush of power flowed through his body and into his reserves, but this time he had other ideas. Instead of absorbing some of the energy like usual, he pulled on it all and immediately the entire base blacked out.
Just a couple seconds later lights came back on as the generators came to life. Up until this point, Ray was busy taking it all. He then focused again on the base and he not only let go of the power, but added his own; this time putting in everything he had.
The base lit up in sparks as the large transformer exploded, sparks flying, same thing happened with all the lights as each one exploded releasing sparks and smoke. Within moments, the whole base was covered in smoke and the smell of burnt metals.
"Is that good enough for you?" Ray snickered but was surprised to be met with an uncharacteristic silence. Looking back at them, he saw bewildered faces, okay maybe he went a little overboard.
He sure as hell hoped they would still be able to fight. "Okay, you have your distraction. What did you have in mind?"
"Em, you've been holding out on me?" Bob stared suspiciously at Emma.
"I swear, I didn't know," Emma replied, defensively.
"You said you saw more soldiers in the woods?" Bob quickly recovered.
"Yeah, only that was about twenty minutes ago."
"No problem shifts end at seven." He said before getting into a light jog heading towards the front entrance, "what we need right now is get to the ones Emma took down. I have a plan"
Both Emma and Ray followed him, and soon they began hearing sounds.
It was radio charter as one of the soldiers had woken up and appeared to be relaying their current situation to the command.
"Emma?" Bob asked once they stopped. She went past Bob and began mumbling a short spell, and the guard dropped on the ground again. "Hurry up," Bob added and went straight for one of the soldiers and began undressing him. Within a few minutes they were both dressed.
"Wake that one up," Bob instructed.
Emma then again muttered a short spell this time, and the soldier woke. Disoriented at first but slowly began assessing his surroundings. Without warning, he promptly reached for his sidearm. Bob quickly grabbed him by the neck and disarmed him while hoisting the poor chap off the ground.
"We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way. You, me and my friends here are going inside that base, and you're coming with us. Try anything stupid, and I'll break your neck before you even manage a syllable. Are we clear?" The soldier reluctantly nodded.
They easily passed the gate and went inside where they saw several dozens of soldiers on high alert and some few others assembled at the flaming transformer. The rest were busy sweeping the entire base, some with flashlights while others wore night vision to ensure the base was still secure.
'Damn you fried everything,' Ray felt proud of his accomplishment.
They marched past the main entrance and into the main building without a hitch until they were stopped by a couple of soldiers just when they were about to access the stairs to the basement. Based on their badges, Bob knew they were outranked.
"And where do you four think you're going? Your shift doesn't end until morning." One of the guards asked as his partner tried to find a way around the fried key access pad of the double doors leading towards the stairs. None of them answered.
Raymond whispered. "Our cover is blown." With their covered faces, the other soldiers couldn't see them communicating; something which Ray exploited using their enhanced hearing.
"The two of you will have to proceed down to the bottom of the staircase. You'll reach a floor where they hold captives. It's bound to be locked. Your friend is most likely being held there in one of the cells."
"I'm asking you a question, private," The same soldier asked impatiently. As if detecting a problem, his partner also switched his attention from the locked doors and towards them.
"Now!" Bob shouted as he sprung for the two guards hitting them squarely on the chest.
Ray and Emma dashed past them and straight for the double doors. She gave the doors a kick, and they yielded. The guard they picked outside used their distraction and made a rush for the alarm on the wall a few feet away from them.
"Oh no, you shouldn't have done that," Bob said before leaping after the soldier who was now reaching for his gun but wasn't quick enough before Bob's fist smashed into his face. With only a few minutes to spare, Bob knew they had to hurry before they find a way to power up the establishment and put it on lockdown in case they get spotted.
