Chapter 20 - Chapter 6.1

When I wake up everything's dark. Too dark even for a vampire. My hands hung above me, tied to the wall. My feet are awkwardly crumpled underneath me and had long since gone numb. When I try and adjust them, the chains that bind my hands jingle over my head. They weren't close enough to the floor for me to sit so instead I struggle to a stand. My clothes were in tatters- the shirt had been torn and was hanging uselessly from my arms bound above me, and my troussers were ripped at the knees.

The expanse was large, I could hear the sounds of dozens of bodies, possibly even hundreds. When I squinted, I could see the shapes of human that shuffled quietly in fear. The walls we moist and rough, like unrefined rock. From how the little scuffles bounced from wall to wall, I think the ceiling was high. Maybe we were in a cave?

The walls ran for about six feet, when it was disrupted by a narrow set of metal bars- I think I was in a cage in a much larger cave. The walls ran for about six feet, when it was disrupted by a narrow set of metal bars- I think I was in a cage, in a much larger cave. There was a small human cowering in the corner of my cage'.

"Excuse me, do you know where we are? Whats happened?" I asked them, my voice rupturing the silence. The figure recoiled and sunk further into themselves, into an even smaller ball. My question falls on deaf ears, and im filled with an awful mixture of trepidation and confusion. What was this place? Why have I been brought here? What do they want? Why are all these humans here? And most importantly- Why does it smell of rotting flesh?

I wrapped the spare chain around my wrist and pulled with all my might, but the metal wouldn't give, and it held firmly to the wall. Which confirmed my suspicions- they must have known that I was a vampire to use reinforced steel. I could break through any normal handcuffs. Which means, they must know that I can walk under sunlight, they must have found out from someone at the school!

I've been so stupid! I should never have left the vampire city! I thought. But as soon as I thought it I regretted it- I didn't mean it. Even after what happened at the school, I still wanted to live with the humans. Crazy, right? The way they looked at me, I should have learnt my lesson, shouldn't i? But even then, I treasure the memories and I things I learnt and I still wanted more. God, I'm being so greedy.

But I guess greed is what got me here in the first place, if I'd never wanted more than I had, everything would have been fine.

As tempting as wallowing in self-pity was, I had to get out of there. I thought back to the lessons I had in the vampire city. So what do I know? I'm chained to a wall, in a cage, in what most likely is a cave. There are humans here but they won't be any help. They are aware that I am a vampire that is immune to sunlight. But if they know I'm a vampire, why did they stick a human in my cage? That doesn't make any… disgust rises from the pit of my stomach did they put them in here as food? My god, where the hell am I? I understood the humans fear now, and if that's the sort of place this is, then I understood the silence. I had to get out of here!

I felt along the floor for a piece of loose rock, if I could find a large enough piece of rock maybe I could chip away at the cave wall and loosen the rock holding the chain to the wall. I reached out like a blind man, but it was difficult chained to a wall as it didn't allow me much radius. I felt small pebbles and grime under my fingers but nothing large enough for what I had in mind. Just as I was about to give up, I knocked a larger stone with my foot, and it went skidding in the other direction. I cursed, even stretching as far as I could go and using the tip of my foot, it was still out of reach.

"could you kick that rock over?" I asked the human. They don't reply. "I promise I won't hurt you. I just want the rock. I don't even like human blood." No reply. Can it even understand me?

I tried a different approach "My name is Shion, what's yours?" my words echo back at me. The humans start to stir restlessly. "Please trust that I wont hurt you." I pleaded, but whatever this place was it installed enough fear into them to prevent them even acknowledge me.

The human shivered at the sound of my voice. I sighed. If I heard correctly, the rock would be about six inches from my reach and slightly to my right. I could see a vague outline if I squinted enough. I hopped on one foot and ripped off my shoes, taking the laces out of one and tying it to the other. The floor was slimy and cold underfoot.

I swung my shoe by the laces back and forth and released it. It took several attempts to successfully anchor the rock with my shoe, but I finally managed to drag it back within my reach. The rock was hard and rough- the same sort of rock as the wall. I held it in my hand and smashed it against the surrounding rock.

BANG! The sound echoed through the cave and made me flinch, the humans stirred uncomfortably in their little huddles. It was much loader than I thought it would be. I listened for over a minute for the sound of the kidnapper's response with my heart thumping in its cage, but the kidnappers were nowhere to be seen.

I let myself relax a little and went about chipping away at the rock. It was clumsy work, multiple times I'd judged it wrong and my finger caught between the metal and the cave wall, and I wasn't long before the tips of my fingers were bloody. I felt along where the metal met the rock- tiny chunks had fallen off, but not nearly enough to loosen it out the wall.

Should I just break my thumb and slip out of the cuffs? No… the cuffs were far too tight for that. My arms were tiring from hitting the wall and I couldn't even sit to rest. The quicker I get out of these cuffs the better. I resumed.
