The first thing that registered in my senses was the foul smell of death. I opened my eyes and had to close them again. The sun was too bright and my body felt too heavy.
Gradually, after regaining some strength, I got myself to move and found that I was on top of Hero. I checked his pulse and was grateful that he was still alive. Carefully, I nudged him to wake. He faintly made a sound, his head making a slow movement as he was coming back to consciousness. I let him be knowing that it would probably take a few minutes for him to finally wake.
Getting on my feet, I coughed as I dusted myself off and let my eyes wander around. I wish I could say that I was surprised. But given what I had last seen the night before, I had somehow expected something like this. The world that we had been used to was gone. I found myself standing in the middle of a ruined world, the smell of death and the feel of it was hanging heavily in the air.
