Chapter 1 - Raccoon's stink not rose essence!

Lightning crackled, as winds blew aggressively, followed by a roar of thunder as if threatening the onslaught of the torrential rainfall to continue for a prolonged period.

The people of Mystic, which nestled along both sides of the Mystic River and divided by the famous Bascule Bridge, is a small town located in the state of Connecticut, lay asleep in their quaint homes unaware of the aggressive weather.

All but two.

A pair of siblings remained awake, hiding from their parents as they quietly snuck to the basement tiptoeing to maintain the silence.

"AAHaa..." one of the two muffled the other dragging them both to hide in the shadows beneath the staircase.

The one cut off from speech due to a hand covering her mouth elbowed her brother, causing him to wince in pain, winning her release as a result.

"Gosh! can't you keep quiet?" she whispered cautiously, craning her neck to check the top of the staircase for sounds. The boy straightened up from his hunched position wheezing in attempts to fill his lungs with the air they had lost.

"Says the one who was going to get us caught with her scream," he accused, eyeing her angrily.

"I stubbed my toe." she defended herself before proceeding forward, gesturing her brother to do the same, which he did but not without muttering angrily under his breath. They continued, following the beacon of lights in their hands, illuminating their path.

Now, one would expect the source of the light to be a torch, a lantern, or maybe even a candle. But the siblings held mere sticks in their hands which, emitted the brilliant glow that guided them to their journey's end.

Entering a basement, they released breaths of relief glad that part one of their plan ended with no complications. Now, for the harder part.

The young girl turned around and shut the doors they entered through before extending her hand, which held the wand.

"Lockius Dorrell," she muttered locking the door to ensure the secrecy of their task.

Similarly her brother lit up the place with his wand.

To say the basement was huge would be an exaggeration, but to describe it as small would be an understatement. So let's say it was of a decent size filled with all sorts of queer objects.

Cauldrons of various shapes and sizes littered the floor along with a few statues of gargoyles and owls.

Bottles and jars filled with the most creepy ingredients occupied half the space on the shelves that stood in the room while the other half sheltered numerous books.

The boy ruffled his brown hair, identical to his sister's, then said," Let's start."

His sister nodded before roaming her hazel orbs as if searching for something.

Walking forward to one of the shelves containing books, she picked out one thick, worn-out looking one which seemed like it had been held in hands of many generations before getting to the state it is in now.

She held the book titled " Advanced spells for Aces" and opened it laying it on a desk with her wand, while her brother prepared all that was needed.

She moved her finger down the words written on the open page, then turned her head to look at her brother, who was busy tending to a cauldron filled to the brim with bright orange-colored liquid.

He used his wand and ignited a flame below the cauldron.

"The potion seems to be coming along perfectly. We only need to add the essence of a raccoon's stinky smell and unicorn's blood," the brunette told the boy before moving to get the mentioned ingredients. Returning, she passed two jars to her brother.

He proceeded to pour the required amount of the ingredients into the potion when his gaze caught sight of the label attached to one of the jars. He looked sharply at his sister," You nut head!"

The girl scowled, " You fowl mouth!"

"You've got two eyes, learn to use them. This is rose essence, not the raccoon's stink we need," he scolded before correcting the mistake himself, leaving the girl staring at him with a gaping mouth.

After a while;

"It's finished."

The cauldron was covered and, lights spell-ed off. The pair, satisfied with their work, and exhausted decide to retire to bed.

" We are the best-est friends in the entire world!" the girl giggled, causing her brother to smile before they both slipped through the door.
