Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7 - Rutherfurds

Amanda was ready to meet the boys. She was thinking about Hall all night. It couldn't be him. He had no reason to do this. He was happy. Was he?

-See you later.

-You are leaving the house again. What is the matter with you?

-I stayed inside for a long time. Don't you think?

-After what you did, it will take time to wash away your shame

-Ron please...

-Not now Samantha. I hope you are not socialize with any of the Tudors. Their last investment went terribly bad. A black man would do better (remember it was 1906). You should meet one of the Feodorovich son. The Russians that... -Bite me! she stopped him angrily and left the house

What was his problem anyway? Whatever happened in the past should have stayed in the past and none of this was her fault.

Her thoughts stopped right away when she saw Hall.

-What are you doing here?

-Nutmeg

-What?

-The killer used nutmeg

-Instead of a bullet?

-Nutmeg in large doses causes motility. Someone gave it to him, he started feeling deazy, he went outside for some fresh air and BOOM mission completed -Makes sence.

But how someone could possibly give it to him just like that?

-That's the point. If we find that out, we can easily find the murderer.

-Maybe Carl can help us. Let's go to his place.

-So you came to this conclution because your house has the same smell as our cellar? This is worrying. It will soon be filled with mold and mice.

-It had a strong smell. Maybe someone melted it there to put it in his wine or something.

-And what about the letters that I found?

-What about them?

-Why he kept the disagreements that had with Rutherfurds and proofs about the "black money" they got in '98?

-So you think it was an economical issue?

-Absolutely

-What about you Amanda?

-It's all about the money

-Good. So what about now?

-You should go and talk with them. I'm gonna stay here and keep my aunt company. She really needs it.

-Will the hoity-toities let me to enter their house?

-Just say that you are one of the Peysters. They keep a low profile.

Rutherfurd's villa was in Notting Hill area, surrounded by guards. Michael was a sistrict attorney with a lot of ships and sourpuss faces. But knowing that Clifford's daughter was ready to marry again they welcomed them warmly.

-We really sorry about your brother sweatheart. What a terrible thing. When the engagement would take place.

-Next month

-Elizabeth Mellors would be such a lucky lady. Where is she now?

-She left the country and she's living with her parents again.

-Good! I mean... let's talk about something more cheerful. Today my older son is coming back from the abroad. America. He loaded his ships with gold. He would loved to meet you. -I am going to keep that in mind. You know...I was wondering why you didn't show up in the trial.

-We were really busy

-What did you do that day?

-Who are you again?

-Thomas Peyster.

-Oh right. I remember you. My younger son was leaving for the abroad that day. South Europe. He will load his ships with Mediterranean pearls. He would loved to meet you.

- I am going to keep that in mind. -Wonderful! What about a dinner tonight?

-Tonight?

-Not you Peyster. You are married. she smilled to the girl

After a while they left the villa

-Are you sure about this?

-It's just a dinner.

-Just promise me that you will take care of yourself.

He grabbed her tenderly by the hand and looked her in the eyes, reminiscent of a stormy sea. His own eyes, like a raging sky was full of sorrow and compassion. For a moment she felt different. Good different. See and sky looking at each other for a moment that looked like centuries but she pulled her hand away and said:

-I'll be.

What was the matter with her? Did she just fell for the killer? If he really was the killer. But how she could ever fell for two people at the same time? Carl was a really good guy and she felt safe around him. But after today's incident with Carl she felt a different kind of connection. At that moment, felt ready to rebuilt her life and leave her dark past behind.
