Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

Location: Unknown

After being forced back through the gate, the marine was transported to the world outside. The portal from Deimos opened meters above its surface, the marine fell unsteadily upon leaving the conduit and took a rough landing. Climbing to his feet, he takes in his new environment in shock. He stared out at a barren landscape of floating islands with surfaces like iron-ore, a carved stone archway stood nearby, glowing red jagged cracks crept up from the base, the archway's surface was weathered with age, untouched for thousands of years.

Bands of rippling moving energy streaked across a psychedelic sky, its swirling colours glowed above and in the space between floating islands. Lightning strikes against a floating mountain far in the distance, it had layers of descending outcroppings that bristled with demonic activity. Bloated, floating demons drift around its summit in a large group. Another much smaller island drifting nearby had its surface covered in demonic growth, many content and tortured human and alien faces had grown from the layer of flesh. He then spotted an island that seemed familiar, it was differently shaped and textured from the others. It was Deimos, formerly one of the pair of moons around Mars, its shape and UAC colony structures were easy for him to spot.

The marine scrutinized Deimos and the visible structures on its surface for some time, the resemblances were impossible to disregard. He then turns his attention back to the hellish world he was trapped within. The marine considers his chances of escaping this place, hopelessness was raking his thoughts. He then looked up again at Deimos and found a glimmer of hope. He must go back the way he came, he must reach Deimos and take control of the teleporter. There would be the chance that he doesn't have the skills to operate the equipment, but he was convinced that it was the only way to get home.

He quickly moved to the edge of the floating island and jumps to another hovering close by. He landed steadily with both boots on the ground. Brightly glowing red and orange swirling portals hung in the air, inches above the ground and freely above the gaping chasm. The marine was continuing to examine his surroundings when his sight began clouding over. For a brief moment, a vision of demonic torture was seen in his mind, hundreds of mortal faces reaching out to him in desperation. The vivid mental image was unlike anything the marine's mind had conjured before, this place was testing his sanity.

The marine was stunned to find a pool of steaming blood-red liquid bubbling up from a crater in the ground, right in front of his feet. He was sure that nothing like this was here when he made his landing. Disbelieving his own sight, he kicks a nearby bone into the fluid, it plopped predictably into the pool, the crimson droplets splashed to the ground and onto his boot. He stepped around the hazard, his senses were reeling.

His mind was spinning, he tried to regain clarity and the world around him began to shift, the floating islands whizzed by while warping in shape, the ground moved frictionlessly beneath his feet as he stood in place. The land masses stretched and merged and formed into another location, hypnotic strands of particles continued to rain into place as the rigid tops of sharp rocks protruding from the ground among a lightly cluttered clearing, a few a blobs of flesh were pulsating within gaping holes in the ground.

The environment solidified its shape and several columns of portal energy emerged, blazing throughout the area, the features of several different demon species gradually took form within the glowing light. The marine reaches for the plasma rifle previously owned by Major Martinez and slams an energy cell magazine into place. The marine grins when he hears the gun's whining confirmation tone and jumps down from his place on a towering rock plateau, a wildly enraged horde of demons were charging toward him. Streams of glowing plasma streaked across the rocky landscape, roasting the creatures in its path.

Deep beneath the surface of Hell, tucked away in a rocky, torch-lit cavern was a ritualistic area with a large circular altar. The heavy breaths of an ancient demon fills the chamber. A Dark Priest watches over the last Baalgar demon. The Priest was wearing a long hooded robe with a sleeved frontless tunic, exposing its pale-grey muscular chest, a skull necklace with a red jewel hung loosely from their neck.

The ancient titan was one of the first to pass from the realm of darkness and brought some form to the emptiness, it is the place where all demon-kind originate. Eons ago, when the multiverse was newly formed, it was the Baalgar demon who stole away an instance of reality from the infinite parallel dimensions of existence and made it host to the demonic creatures and influence residing in the vastly empty demonic realm. The multiverse's earliest civilizations often fought against invasions launched from the stolen dimension, the demons staged campaign after campaign of mortal harvest. Over the course of these wars, many of the Baalgar demon would fall in battle and over time only one would remain. The Dark Priests named the demon 'The Harbinger of Doom' and 'Hell's Mightiest Warrior'.

The last Baalgar was defeated during Hell's distantly recent campaign against planet Mortick, but the Dark Priests were able to summon enough ritual energy to open a portal and bring it back to Hell. The demon arrived from the gate roaring in fury. Its body was pierced by hundreds of wooden arrows and spears. Spores of a plant had taken root in the Baalgar's left arm and right leg, the plant was thriving on the demon's flesh and its constricting vines delivered poison to its host. Despite trying and failing to regenerate the demon, the Dark Priests were forced to amputate the affected limbs.

They cauterize the gushing wounds and suspended Hell's Mightiest Warrior with shackled chains hung from spikes driven high up into the cavern wall. It was here that the Dark Priests had placed a pillared altar, torches and candles, where they worshiped and looked after the last of the Baalgar demon.

The Hell Preist was chanting before the altar, their hushed voice echoes against the cavern walls, accompanied by the Baalgar's hungered grunts. Glowing red hell energy manifests above the altar before the Baalgar. The cloud of coursing crimson is drawn into the demon's body, it growls contently as the energy strengthens and nourishes the ancient giant.

A glowing portal from Deimos opens in the dimly lit chamber, the Spider-Mastermind emerged followed by a large hovering cargo-mover drifting through the gate and a pair of demon-surgeons. The surgeons approach and examine the Baalgar as the Spidermind screeched at the Hell Priest, the demon hands them a data sheet with blueprints of augmentations. Impressed by the Spider-Mind's enhancements, the Dark Priest agrees to release the Baalgar into its care, assisting by releasing the chains and helping place it onto the hovering surface.

Hell's Mightiest Warrior is brought to the demon-controlled UAC science station on Deimos where it is operated upon immediately. The Baalgar roars as the cargo-mover carried it from the Portal Lab to an Engineering Bay covered in demonic growth. They move the Baalgar onto an operating table and the demonized surgeons strap it down, the demon's vital signs soon appear on a holo-monitor. After a hasty examination, the surgeons begin reviewing schematics of potential artificial upgrades, the ancient demon squints at the strange information beaming from the monitor. They began to operate with the help of robotic engineering robots. Cutting-edge artificial organs and a spectrum of cybernetic upgrades were gradually implanted, the surgeons began to build the demon a new reinforced metal prosthetic leg, afterward a neural link with an open socket is built onto its missing arm, they then locked a dangerous prototype weapon into the socket.
