Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

The Marine had been fighting aimlessly through Hell for hours, his crusade had erupted into havoc for the demons. His mind was burning with righteous fury, hundreds of hellspawn corpses littered his path. He arrives at the shore of a poisonous blood-red lake, large slabs of slanted rocks framed the landscape. The lake held a thick toxic fog, the trunks of dead trees sway nearby, much of the branching roots were exposed beneath the twisted limbs. The poisoned, uneven ground led to the edge of the coast, tightly coiled demonic growth resembling intestines grew from the shore, squirming as the waves of poison splashed over them.

A flicker of light attracts his notice, another module of UAC technology appeared in the distance, sent to the surface by the demons in control of Deimos. Long slimy tentacles emerge from the ground and wrap their appendages around the humming module and pull it down beneath the surface.

'This can't be good' the Marine observes.

He pressed on for some time close to the coastline until finding a rocky clearing, a large-jawed demon was hungrily gnawing a human looking corpse. As he quietly approached, he saw what looked like a Union Aerospace uniform. The demon notices the marine and let's out a grunt as it spun around to face him. Its fangs were covered in blood, strands of saliva streaking to the ground. The demon roars and a circular portal opens, four big cybernetically enhanced demons emerge, the Marine could see the demon-controlled teleportation lab on the other side of the gate.

The Pinky charges toward the Marine, squealing. The Marine evades and the demon continued for a short distance before skidding to a stop, kicking up a cloud of dust around it. The Mancubus shoots flaming blobs on the Marine, it collides with a burst of plasma and dissipates. As the Mancubus moved closer, he could hear sickening gurgling stomach noises and belching from their grime covered, flabby bodies, the weapons attached to the ends of their arms were caked with black thickly textured soot. They lift their heads and roar, revealing their filthy protruding fangs.

The Pinky comes in for another charge, the marine used the demon's momentum to fling it crashing into a boulder with a quick countering throw. He then jumps onto the weapon of a Mancubus and runs up its arm, spins around and backflips over its head while unloading the plasma rifle in its face, the marine lands behind the Mancubus, the demon's head was burned into a cloud of drifting ashes, it fell to the ground with a thud. The other Mancubus became enraged and fired wildly, the marine rapidly dodged the blobs, quickly dashing between projectiles. The pinky demon closed on the marine from behind, he notes the angle of its approach, runs up the side of a short rock cliff and falls back upon the approaching Pinky, grabs its large head and wrenches it quickly, breaking its neck with a crumbling snap, it collapses to the dusty stone ground. The Marine now had the breathing space to deal with the remaining slow-moving Mancubus, one by one, using the plasma rifle to cook them into smoking charred carcasses.

He lowers his rifle and walks to the corpse that had been partially eaten by the Pinky, he prods the body with his boot and turns it onto its back, it was a female UAC scientist, the uniform held patches from the Deimos colony. The scientist's lifeless face held a horrified expression. The demons in control of Deimos must have forced her through the portal to the surface, she had no hope of survival without an environment suit or any weapons. As he was looking down on the remains, a white glowing orb appears from beyond a wall of jagged rocks and approaches, it orbits around his leg and torso, dances up his arm and passes through his helmet.

He was both delighted and surprised upon noticing the small visitor inside his armour, the little orb emanated with positive energy.

Having succeeded in getting the Marine's attention, the spirt passes back into the environment. It floats toward a twisting path that the Marine hadn't noticed, it was overgrown by dead thorny vines. It then drifted to the marine, then to the path and back again. It looked like the orb wanted him to follow it, he had to admit that he had no idea where he was going. Strange as it was, he allowed the small white orb to guide him. He follows the orb along the path, it wasn't long before a sizeable gore-nest appeared in the distance, the orb danced happily and zooms toward incoming demon attacks to alert the Marine on their trek.

The rocky path to the gore nest disappeared beneath the demonic growth, the way was covered in sizeable strands of flesh that extended away from the central mass. Upon getting closer, he entered an area flooded with foul-smelling fluid, as he slogged through he steps around the skeletal remains of mortals. Nearing the nest, the slimy growth became larger and the area more flooded. After moving around a mounding growth in his path the gore nest groans morbidly.

The centre of the nest was crowned with a tall pillared wall of ribbed growth, giant boils grew upon the surface and a pair of long pointed horns converged above. A large eye emerges from the nest and looks in the marine's direction. The mass of flesh sways, large and smaller tentacles slithered to the surface, a mouth on the nest with jutting fangs screeches loudly as giant tentacles aimlessly slammed downward, sending up splashing waves of fluid as it collides with the branching growth.

The small orb of light spasmed next to the Marine, silently beckoning him onward. He blasts a tentacle into pieces, the gore nest screeches angrily and another giant slithering appendage slams down on the Marine, forcing him to move out of its path.

He climbed over a mounding organ and slid unsteadily to the other side, he found himself standing among tall heaps of alien corpses, it looked like hundreds of doomed mortals. The nest groans and a branch of growth next to the Marine suddenly lurches outwards, more growth from the centre mass emerges from behind it. The gore nest opened its fangs releasing an enraged hovering demon, screaming horribly from two mouths that belched swarms of small flaming skulls. The demon had leathery crimson skin and sharp horns. Hell energy rains down, releasing a pack of attacking imps. The Marine had been shoved into the foul fluid by the shifting masses, he already climbed out of the slime. Glowing plasma streaked forth, turning demons to overcooked meat, he bounds over a wall of growth as a tentacle came crashing down.

The pain elemental flies toward the Marine, its pair of jaws gnashing. He sees it approach and winds up to punch it in its single eye, the demon screams in anger. As the plasma burns through a tentacle, the empty space gave way to a view of an orifice on the nest vomiting a stream of steaming black sludge. The Marine fought on, but he soon found his mind being pulled by an invisible force, it was an intense psychic attack. He carried on, trying to keep in control. He evades another tentacle and reloads the rifle. His sight began to cloud over, soon he had to keep firing and guess where to shoot. A brief vision of the monster trying to control him appeared in his mind, all he could see was its angry eyes consumed with darkness.

His vision returned to witness a wave of imps being shot to pieces over a pair of fallen tentacles, the pain elemental swooped into view, its bloated body was partly charred by plasma fire, it came in for another charge. His vision clouded again and another vision revealed itself as he felt a guiding force directing his rifle. He sees a spanning civilization on an alien world, the planet was bursting with beautiful plant-life interwoven with settlements branching widely. He then sees a group of alien warriors standing around him, each wearing a suit of living-plant armour, wielding whips and shields of living thorny vines. His vision returns and he sees the pain elemental explode into sizzling energized chunks. He releases the trigger, he feels the presence of the warriors around him. Looking around, the growth-strewn area was covered in dead aliens and fallen giant tentacles. He had somehow wiped out all the attacking demon.

The glowing orb appeared drifting in his armour, thankful energy beamed upon him. The orb drifts toward the gore nest, it zooms all around a few times, and stops at a big protruding pimple on the surface and excitedly drifts around it. The Marine follows the orb to the nest and observes the orb ramming the pustule, he follows its lead and punches the yellow, rounded protrusion. The pimple bursts, releasing a splash of slimy fluid and revealing a pulsating demonic organ, attached to the nest by three connecting arteries, the orb of light swirls around and around the organ.

'Pull it' says a mysterious voice in his mind, the gore nest screeches in protest.

He grabs the organ and rips it from the recession. The gore nest groans sourly as fluid leaked from the fresh wound. The nest screamed for some time, then releasing a foul-smelling gust of air. It moved spasmodically, stubbornly unwilling to give up its secret.

A mass of slime and organs spills from the nest, it groans a final tortured tone of defeat and becomes still, its fanged orifices slowly open, the barbs extending away, sheets of dripping tissue framed the passage. He steps inside, the orb of light zooms ahead, zipping around the slimy growth, stepping through, a thick rope of stranded muscle hung close above his head.

The orb led him to an area where none of the demonic growth had penetrated, the nest had grown around a tall standing column, it was within the solid stone ground.
