Chapter 1: Escape

(Mazikeen's POV)

I love the feeling of the wind. The way it feels in my hair, against my face. You cant see it, you just feel it. The invisible wind. I loved it so much I usually got in trouble often opening my window to put my head out, or even just my hand. The air pumping in my lungs is what keeps me alive. I need it. The air, the wind, the soft breeze blowing against my body.

But at this moment it's been stolen. I can't feel it. I can't breathe it in. I don't sense it. I feel as if I'm suffocating, and even though I know that breathing air is a choice, I can't seem to make the right one.

I'm trapped. Pinned down under another body. A dead body. The body smells old and rotten. Dried up crusty blood falling onto my face, and the musty smell surrounding me. I make small moves in an attempt to get free without drawing attention to myself.

I finally got out, but I'm now realizing with horror what that means. The consequences I'll have to face if they catch me. I'm going to make it to Eden. A safe haven that I, we, hope is real. We need it to be real. Freedom is crucial to humans in the world I live in.

Humans are equal to animals, the bottom of the food chain. If I'm caught, I'll be put in the pit, or worse the whore house. This is my only chance at freedom, my only shot at free will. A happy marriage, with a normal guy.

I give the body a little shove hauling it off of me as I let the air fill my craving lungs. It burns my throat as I suck in large gulps of air greedily. I cough, and I sit up panting, just in time to catch a soft breeze. I cautiously crouch in the dump truck, carefully. Peaking over the side of the open-roofed truck I see green trees and grass.

Both are greener than what I'd imagined, different than what I thought it would look like, better than anything I've ever seen before. I look up covering my eyes from the huge piercing bright light bulb. When I feel as if I'm used to the brightness I notice the sky.

The white lumps of cotton floating in it, and the beautiful bluish-white watery color to it. I realize that I'm smiling, a rare thing for me. I love it all, even the smaller details like the multicolored flowers in the grass coming in patches. I even love the little red and black spotted thing crawling on my arm right now.

A horn blares in the distance snapping me back into reality, out of my trance, and I jump out of the dump truck. I bolt towards the trees, seeking refuge in the green mass. I hear helicopter wings spinning up behind me, shouts from the cold ones soldiers.

The cold one. The leader of them all. Nobody has seen him and lives to tell the tale about it. Not his soldiers, not even his parents. But we know he exists, we all do. He's the creator of all the creatures, not just the vampires. He's all of the creatures of this world put together in one.

I run faster. My soft exposed bare feet not making a sound against the light green grass. Even as I make it to where there's more grass my feet are silent against the ground. My hair flying up behind me. Wind against my face, and seeping from my lungs in huffs from pushing my physical limit. I feel a stabbing pain in my abdomen, but I continue to run.

My mind commanding my body to keep moving, my feet crashing down on the dirt after each other. My boobs bouncing up and down painfully, and normally I'd be embarrassed, but none of that matters right now as I run for my life. Surviving for my sister is the only thing I care about, my sister's face flashes in my mind, and I know I can't let them catch me for her sake.

I dive into the trees a rubber bullet showing right beside my face, missing me by a centimeter. I crouch down, behind a huge mossy green tree. I breathe heavily, my throat burning as I try to ease the pain all over my body. My boobs tingling, and my feet cut up by small rocks I hadn't felt until now, probably because of the adrenaline.

My stomach growls, and my mouth is dry. I need food and water. After a while, my stomach starts to ache with a throbbing emptiness, and my insides squeeze at each other. I lick my chapped lips and nervously chew at my bottom lip. I curse as I obviously should've thought this through.

The sky got darker becoming a dark blue, purple, and pink color. The bright yellow light bulb now a dull orange. I stand fixing the dirty blue jumpsuit I'm wearing. I start walking praying I don't run into anything. I'm not stupid, I know that there are worse things than death.

I sense the water before I see it. Noticing how humid it's getting as I walk in the north. The smell of water, the sound of splashing. I make a dash in the direction frantically searching. Desperate. I find it, leaning down, and drinking the water in desperate gulps. My reflection stares back at me, tired and anxious.

My curly red hair is messy, and my black doll eyes are highlighted with thick black eyelashes that curl at the ends. My lips are puffy, and a plush reddish-pink color. I scowl, wishing someone higher up on the food chain had my looks.

Out here a pretty human has no chance of saving her virginity till marriage, and I know that it's stupid to think I could even get married since communication between humans is prohibited, I still have hope.

Hope brought you out here, in the middle of nowhere without a plan, and it's what's gonna get you killed. The thought runs through my head, and I believe it. I believe that it will eventually get me killed, but I'm not stopping until I'm dead. I'm going to fight back. I have been playing their game for the past 16 years. I hid my body under dirt and bruises. I hid my defiance by saying being sarcastic without the tone.

I'm lucky I've even made it to 16 intact since my body is a little too perfect, a body every female dreams of, one that even most vampires dont have. My legs and arms thick and curvy, my butt nice and soft perky like my boobs, and my hair is silky and soft.

All of those put a target on my back. By males and females. Girls were jealous, and they hated me, boys would drool and lick their lips at me. In the circle age is also a part of your survival, when you turn 18 they sell you to whoever wants you for the higher price, that's the only reason I haven't been sold off.

I stand and walk around feeling a little drowsy, looking for things to build a tent with. I manage to avoid most of the tiny glass pieces, but I still step on a few sharp shards whimpering in absolute pain.

I hear the helicopter above the forest, and I hear shouts every once in a while of a soldier searching for me at the edges of the woods. They aren't allowed to come inside, because this territory isn't for them. They aren't allowed anywhere but grasslands until they get a warrant, and it's only been about 7 hours. They can't file for one until after 48 hours.

After a while, I find a small cave collapsing to the floor, starvation consuming me. It's colder now that it's darker. The world blurs and starts tilting in funny positions. My whole body starts to get hot, and I claw at the ground. I hear footsteps and voices coming right towards me. That's when my vision goes blurry, and darkness consumes my vision.
