For so long everyone in their village was desolate and unmoving. There was almost no increase in population as they were afraid that their loved ones would fade away before then. The deaths of their own were already hard to deal with. How much more if it was someone who shares the same flesh and blood? The original inhabitants were resistant precisely due to this reason.
Halphas, the one who can see the future, encourage everyone to at least find happiness in their long lives. He said that this is not what their fallen comrades and their queen wants for them.
